By Susan Walden Budget-tightening has been on the agenda at the Brevard County School Board. Members agreed to trim $3.5 million from the operat- ing budget May 27 – the first reduction so far. On May 20, Superintendent Dr. Richard DiPatri an- nounced Phase II budget reductions as the district works to absorb a $38.4 million budget shortfall. That number has been revised from the $35.9 million originally dis- cussed. The $3.5 million cut will come from the administrative offices of Brevard Public Schools, however, no staff will be axed. “Starting last June, Dr. DiPatri NASA/Fletch Hildreth had the foresight to freeze vacant Space Shuttle Discovery leaps from billows of smoke into a clear blue sky on its STS-124 mission to positions and those will be eliminat- the International Space Station May 31 at 5:02 p.m. The mission is the 26th in the assembly of the ed,” said BPS spokesman Wes space station. Are You and Your Family REAL ESTATE LEGALLY & FINANCIALLY SENSE PREPARED for the Future? AVOIDING HOME

Bobby Mutter REPAIR SCAMS The National Association of Consumer Agency Administrators and the Consumer Federation of America say dissatisfaction with home improvement work is the number one consumer complaint. Consumer advocates recommend that you check out a contractor’s licenses, call the references given, and check with the local Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed. Here are some other contractor tricks to watch out for: * He comes to your home, uninvited, offering to make repairs. * He says he is working in the area and has extra materials left over from another job. * He tells you that you must make repairs immediately to avoid damage and tries to pressure you to sign a contract immediately. * He offers to use your home as a “display home” or promises a discount in exchange for a referral.$ Wednesday,June25 6:30 -8:00 p.m. 1710 SOUTH WASHINGTON AVE.
