Abstract We present new information on the latitudinal and altitudinal distribution of five species of recently-described or poorly-known glassfrogs from eastern Ecuador. We include novel data on its body size and natural history. Information on the diversity and biogeography of the centrolenid frogs of Eastern Ecuador is discussed, finding them associated with six ve- getation formations distributed between the eastern Andean slopes and lowland Amazonia. -

Das neue Taxon ist die erste Art der Gattung Centrolene, die man aus den zentralen und südlichen Ausläufern der Cordillera Oriental Ecuadors kennt. Die neue Art unterscheidet sich von anderen Glasfröschen durch die mäßige Körpergröße (25,7- 26,1 mm bei adulten Männchen), die einheitliche Färbung (grün im Leben, blaß lavendelfärben im Kon- servierungsmittel), die in Rücken- wie in Seitenansicht runde Schnauze, das Vorhandensein mittelgroßer, gerader Oberarmdornen, die bei adulten Männchen ziemlich spitz zulaufen, und das Fehlen von Guanophoren auf dem Peritoneum der Eingeweide. ABSTRACT A new species of frog of the family Centrolenidae is described from Ecuador. This new taxon is the first species of the genus Centrolene known to inhabit the central and southern foothills of the Cordillera Oriental of Ecuador. -

We describe the advertisement and combat calls, combat behavior, and reproductive behavior of the glass frog Centrolene lynchi, an endemic species of the cloud forests of Ecuador. The typical advertisement call consists of a tonal note and 1–3 peaked notes, each with 1–3 pulses. Variations on this advertisement call include the addition of a short note before the tonal note, as well as the absence of the tonal note. -

The effects of farming on local ecosystems and wildlife are understudied, particularly in regions where farms are often limited to subsistence practices with little to no government regulation. The infuence of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farms on glassfrog community composition was assessed in the Mindo and Alambi regions of Ecuador. Call surveys were conducted during the dominant glassfrog reproductive season (March–May 2017) across 13 sites, six of which were in the immediate proximity of trout farms. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling ordination analyses and multiple response permutation procedures indicate that glassfrog communities differed between trout farm and non-trout farm sites (MRPP; A = 0.11, P = 0.04). -
Protected Areas Assessment for the Conservation of Threatened Amphibians in the Cordillera Oriental of Colombia

Albornoz-Espinel1, Carlos H. Cáceres-Martínez1,2 and Aldemar A. Acevedo-Rincón1,3,* Abstract. The global decline of amphibians is one of the greatest challenges in Conservation Biology. In this study we assessed the level of protection in Protected Areas (PAs) in the Cordillera Oriental of Colombia for 52 species of threatened amphibians. We also determined the changes in vegetation coverage, both inside and outside the PAs. Our data collection was made between February 2015 and June 2017, when we gathered information from databases, biological collections, and the literature. Geographical records were georeferenced and overlaid on the layers of 190 PAs and on the layers of land coverage of the Cordillera Oriental. Our results confirm the limited level of protection for amphibians provided by PAs, whereby only 33 species represented in 160 out of 509 geographical records showed a report within PAs. At the same time, drastic changes were evident in vegetation coverage, which for most localities where records of vegetation were made 10–30 years ago was reduced to mosaics of fragmented forests, crops, and grasslands. This study demonstrates the need to establish priority actions and efficiently generate geographical areas of protection, in terms of coverage of the distribution of threatened amphibians in the Eastern region of Colombia. La riqueza de anfibios conocida actualmente para el Valle del Cauca es de 162 especies, representadas en su mayoría por ranas y sapos (148 especies vs 4 de salamandras y 10 de caecilias). Los reptiles están representados por 132 especies, siendo 68 de ellas serpientes, 55 lagartos, 7 tortugas y sólo dos de caimanes y cocodrilos. La mayor riqueza de la herpetofauna del Valle del Cauca está concentrada en la Región del Pacífico y la Cordillera Occidental. -

Explaining Andean Megadiversity: the Evolutionary and Ecological Causes of Glassfrog Elevational Richness Patterns

Hutter,1* Juan M. The Tropical Andes are an important global biodiversity hotspot, harbouring extraordinarily high richness Guayasamin2 and John J. Wiens1 and endemism. Although elevational richness and speciation have been studied independently in some Andean groups, the evolutionary and ecological processes that explain elevational richness patterns in the Andes have not been analysed together. Herein, we elucidate the processes underlying Andean richness patterns using glassfrogs (Centrolenidae) as a model system. Glassfrogs show the widespread mid-elevation diversity peak for both local and regional richness. Remarkably, these patterns are explained by greater time (montane museum) rather than faster speciation at mid-elevations (montane species pump), despite the recency of the major Andean uplift. We also show for the first time that rates of climatic-niche evolution and elevational change are related, supporting the hypothesis that climatic-niche conservatism decelerates species’ shifts in elevational distributions and underlies the mid-elevation richness peak. These results may be relevant to other Andean clades and montane systems globally.
