William Sullivan of the law firm of Marsh Mundorf Pratt Sullivan + McKenzie will be discussing real ethical issues confronting us all. Please e-mail bill at [email protected] with any ethical dilemmas or ethical questions that you’ve encountered in your practice. Bill will present them as hypotheticals at the CLE for a roundtable review and discussion, with the development of common sense solutions. This should create a CLE that will benefit everyone, focusing ethical quandries that we can all expect to face. To effectively assist and participate in the discussion, it would be helpful if all attendees brought with them a copy of the RPCs.

Elizabeth Turner of the Washington State Bar Association Assistant General Counsel will be presenting a seminar on retainer letters and fee agreements. A topic that every practitioner needs to hear. What are the ethical implications in the fee agreements and retainer letters that you use in your daily practice? Start the year out with timely advice for 2009.

Both presentations will be one hour in length.

10 Snohomish County Bar News • FEBRUARY 2009 Snohomish County Bar Association & Snohomish County Legal Services 15th Annual Dinner and Auction

Legal Aid - - It’s not just for the LUCKY!

Tulalip Resort Casino Saturday, March 7, 2009 5:00pm

It’s close to that time of the year again—the Snohomish County Bar Association and Snohomish County Legal Services’ Annual Dinner & Auction. This year we have a new venue, the Tulalip Resort Casino. We are very excited about the location. From all reports, this will be fabulous venue, with excellent food and service. Many people are booking rooms at the Resort for that night so they can stay late at the auction and bid on more items.

Your favorite items from previous auctions will still be here, from the dessert auction to Geoff Gibb’s Barbeque to weekend stays at local resorts. We will also have some new items for you to bid on. One example is an “Instant Wine Cellar”. As part of this item, we are asking everyone to bring one bottle of wine as a donation. The bottles will be combined and auctioned off together in the live auction portion. Just think, you could instantly acquire over 200 bottles of wines. What wine connoisseur wouldn’t love this! Another new development is that we hope to have an on-line catalog for you to preview prior to the actual auction. See Snohomish County Legal Services web site for more details.

The auction is more important this year than ever. The ranks of low income persons needing civil legal aid are swelling at the same time funding opportunities for legal aid are shrinking. This year Snohomish County Legal Services is facing serious budget cuts due in part to the financial crisis and increasing costs. This means cuts in staffing and interpretative services, which in turn leads to cuts in the amount of legal services offered to the low income families in Snohomish County.

So, how can you help? First and foremost, come to the Dinner and Auction and bid on items. Second, fill out a procurement form and donate articles for the auction. Third, invite your friends and co-workers to the auction. Fourth, consider sponsoring the auction. In return for your monetary donation, you will receive recognition at the venue and in the auction program, as well as free admission tickets for the auction.

If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me or Threesa Milligan, Executive Director of Snohomish County Legal Services. We look forward to seeing you on March 7th!

FEBRUARY 2009 • Snohomish County Bar News 13 NORTH SOUND COLLABORATIVE LAW

Collaborative law is “a different way to divorce.” It is supportive, considerate, sensible, constructive, and mutual. Disputes are resolved respectfully. Ultimately, the collaborative law process creates “shared solutions that acknowledge the highest priorities of everyone involved.”

In this model, lawyers work with other allied professionals to address the divorcing couple’s emotional, financial, legal and parenting issues. Most importantly, collaborative team members agree not to litigate their disputes. If litigation is inevitable, clients are referred to trial attorneys and the collaborative attorneys withdraw.

The following legal practitioners are well-trained in the collaborative method, and welcome your referrals:
