Our clients benefit from improved performance, reduced costs, and a long-term resilience to changes related to climate and energy risk.

Our long term, trust-based relationships with clients are evidence of more than a decade of analysing, advising on and applying carbon reduction in practice. We adhere to ISO-9001 and 14001, and utilise quality management and client satisfaction systems throughout all projects. 10 Suggested Eco-Professionals Directory

Listed buildings: Case Study One

The Diocese of Gloucester were successful in obtaining LEAF funding and appointed Sustain as expert professional consultants to undertake building energy audits for over 50 churches of various sizes, ages and listed statuses to determine the most effective energy and carbon saving measures. Sustain carried out an initial health check for each of the churches, reviewing gas and electricity consumption and comparing them against appropriate benchmarks. We checked current energy rates to ensure churches were paying the right costs and VAT charges in a confused market, and we advised on whether they could obtain a preferential rate. We then undertook a walk round audit at each site with a PCC member, where we discussed church usage patterns and pointed out immediate and visible energy savings improvements. In addition Sustains expert surveyors suggested, and with permission, made improvements such as changing temperature settings, adding labels or removing unnecessary devices. Finally we presented each church with a bespoke and comprehensive energy audit report, which clearly detailed all of the energy saving recommendations, including practical advice on how to procure and implement all of the recommended measures.

Case Study Two

Croft Castle, located near Leominster, is one of National Trust’s many properties and is an historic and listed property that requires precise climatic conditions for conservation of the building and its artifacts. It is also off the mains gas network and consequently has a mixture of oil and electric heating. The National Trust were keen to get independent advice for energy reduction measures at the site and Sustain were asked to conduct an energy audit and renewable energy feasibility assessment for to ascertain which carbon reduction technologies were suitable and prioritise these in order of cost effectiveness. Sustain started their work by carrying out a walk round energy audit of the castle grounds. This looked at areas such as the heating and ventilation systems already in place, levels of insulation, lighting and general behaviour usage. Due to our experience in identifying solutions to reduce building energy usage, we can apply this during the audit, and apply the right recommendations based on the individual circumstances and context for the client. As well as the walk round audit Sustain also carried out detailed analysis of energy data for the site, which revealed that over 60% of the site energy costs are due to electricity use and that the tea room is the biggest energy user. This information allows Croft Castle to investigate the site energy use further and target areas where energy using equipment could be reduced. The exercise identified a number of zero cost and low cost measures that could be implemented immediately to save the site over 10% of their annual energy costs. These included changes to the building management system and control of equipment, energy efficient lighting, flange and valve and pipework insulation and some behavioural measures to encourage reduction in energy use. By providing the capital cost and annual cost and carbon savings for each of the recommended technologies, Croft Castle can clearly see where they can focus their resources and prioritise the technologies by payback. It also allows them to submit a bid for funding to the central office finance team and have independent figures to back up their business case.

Large buildings: Sustain have successfully delivered cost effective carbion reduction strategies across a wide range different buildings in a variety of market sectors including, schools and education, retail, public sector, heritage, leisure, housing, industry and manufacturing. Recent clients have been in a variety of sectors including: Construction & Property (Kier, Wolseley Plc); Energy (EDF Energy, npower, Scottish & Southern Energy); Food & Drink (Associated British Foods, Marks & Spencer, The Cooperative Group); Manufacturing (Linpac Allibert, Honeywell, Vaillant); Professional Services (RSA Insurance, Tullett Prebon plc) and Public Sector (the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, the Royal Academy of Music, University of Bath, London South Bank University, and the London Boroughs of Islington and Camden and Bristol City Council).
