This issue contains the first village flora to be included. Barbara Last has systematically recorded the plants growing in Berwick St James, and her article gives an account of her findings. Hopefully, it will inspire others to do similar work in their own localities. Our second article is the first systematic account we have published on the vegetation of Salisbury Plain. In this case, Kevin Walker and Richard Pywell describe the grassland communities of the MoD Training Area. Stems often weak and clambering, often notably prickly or “sticky” (i.e., retrorsely aculeolate, “velcro-like”). Raphides present. Leaves opposite, mostly with leaflike stipules in whorls of 4, 6, or more, usually sessile or occasionally petiolate, without domatia, abaxial epidermis sometimes punctate- to striate-glandular, mostly with 1 main nerve, occasionally triplinerved or palmately veined; stipules interpetiolar and usually leaflike, sometimes reduced. Inflorescences mostly terminal and axillary (sometimes only axillary), thyrsoid to paniculiform or subcapitate, cymes several to many flowered or in- frequently reduced to 1 flower, pedunculate to sessile, bracteate or bracts reduced especially on higher order axes [or bracts some- times leaflike and involucral], bracteoles at pedicels lacking. Flowers mostly bisexual and monomorphic, hermaphroditic, sometimes unisexual, andromonoecious, occasionally polygamo-dioecious or dioecious, pedicellate to sessile, usually quite small. Calyx with limb nearly always reduced to absent; hypanthium portion fused with ovary. Corolla white, yellow, yellow-green, green, more rarely pink, red, dark red, or purple, rotate to occasionally campanulate or broadly funnelform; tube sometimes so reduced as to give appearance of free petals, glabrous inside; lobes (3 or)4(or occasionally 5), valvate in bud. Stamens (3 or)4(or occasionally 5), inserted on corolla tube near base, exserted; filaments developed to ± reduced; anthers dorsifixed. Inferior ovary 2-celled, ± didymous, ovoid, ellipsoid, or globose, smooth, papillose, tuberculate, or with hooked or rarely straight trichomes, 1 erect and axile ovule in each cell; stigmas 2-lobed, exserted. -

THE GREAT BATH ROAD, 1700-1830 BrendaJ.Buchanan The great turnpike highway from London to the spa city of Bath is surrounded by legend and romance, 1 which have come to obscure the fact that at no time in the period studied was there any one single Bath Road. Instead, from the beginning of the eighteenth century there were created over the years and in a patchy, disorganized sequence, some fifteen turnpike trusts which with varying degrees of efficiency undertook the improvement of the roads under their legislative care. Not until the mid-eighteenth century was it possible to travel the whole distance between capital and provincial city on improved roads, and even then the route was not fixed. Small changes were frequently made as roads were straightened and corners removed, the crowns of hills lowered and valley bottoms raised. On a larger scale, new low-level sections were built to replace older upland routes, and most significant of all, some whole roads went out of use as traffic switched to routes which were better planned and engineered by later trusts. And at the time when the turnpike roads were about to face their greatest challenge from the encroaching railways in the 1830s, there were at the western end of the road to Bath not one but two equally important routes into the city, via Devizes and Melksham, or through Calne and Chippenham along the line known to-day as the A4. This is now thought of as the traditional Bath Road, but it can be demonstrated that it is only one of several lines which in the past could lay claim to that title. -

The panel includes suitably qualified and experienced representatives from The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire; Natural England; The Environment Agency; Cambridgeshire County Council; Peterborough City Council; South Cambridgeshire District Council; Huntingdonshire District Council; East Cambridgeshire District Council; Fenland District Council; Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Environmental Records Centre and many amateur recorders and recording groups. INTRODUCTION The Selection Criteria are substantially based on Guidelines for selection of biological SSSIs published by the Nature Conservancy Council (succeeded by English Nature) in 1989. Appropriate modifications have been made to accommodate the aim of selecting a lower tier of sites, i.e. those sites of county and regional rather than national importance. The initial draft has been altered to reflect the views of the numerous authorities consulted during the preparation of the Criteria and to incorporate the increased knowledge of the County's habitat resource gained by the Phase 1 Habitat Survey (1992-97) and other survey work in the past decade. -

To: (i) Consider an application for an Order to divert lengths of public bridleways at The Mill House, Calstone Wellington, Calne. (ii) Recommend that Wiltshire Council refuses the application for an Order to divert lengths of public bridleways at The Mill House, Calstone Wellington, Calne. Relevance to the Council’s Business Plan 2. Working with the local community to provide a rights of way network which is fit for purpose, making Wiltshire an even better place to live, work and visit. Background 3. Wiltshire Council has statutory duties to maintain the record of public rights of way in Wiltshire (excluding the Borough of Swindon), to maintain the rights of way shown therein, and to assert and protect them for the use and enjoyment of the public. These duties are not discretionary. 4. In addition to these duties the Council also has a power to make Orders to alter the rights of way network (though not for highways carrying a right for the public to use mechanically propelled vehicles). These Orders are known as public path Orders and they may create, extinguish or divert public rights of way. Wiltshire Council accepts applications for these Orders and processes them amongst work relating to its statutory duties. -

Grows vertically with a straight main trunk. The winter buds are a remarkable brownish-red colour and glossy. In the spring the young leaves emerge almost white. Once they are fully grown only the underside remains a remarkable light grey. The leaves are rough and slightly lobed. No other ornamental apple tree has such exceptional autumnal colours as this. With its many shades, from purple and copper through orange to yellow, the tree is a real eye-catcher in the autumn. The (fragrant) flowers and the fruits are much less spectacular than those of the other ornamental apple trees.
