His background includes stops with the Wis- consin Timber Rattlers, the Milwaukee Brewers, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, and most recently as The Vice President of The Lansing Lugnuts. Malliet was the Midwest League Executive of the Year in 1995 as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers went on to win the Bob Freitas Award as the most outstanding Minor League Organization. Malliet is noted as a new ballpark and organization builder. He has taken four organizations from the ground up and built them into some of the most suc- cessful Minor League baseball operations in the country. The Timber Rattlers and Pelicans remain two of the most successful organizations in all of Minor League Baseball. He was instrumental in the start-ups of the Wisconsin Tim- ber Rattlers, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the Joliet Jackhammers, and the Nor- mal CornBelters of the Frontier League. While with the Timber Rattlers, Steve was instrumental in helping them open Fox Cities Stadium in 1995. During his most recent stop with the Lansing Lugnuts Steve helped ink a stadium naming agreement with Jackson National Life Insurance in the face of a pandemic. kingfish vs. bobbers recap In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic threw a curveball at Northwoods League Play. The Kingfish’s season seemed improbable, and players who traveled from all across the country had to consider heading home. When all hope in a sea- son seemed lost, a new idea emerged to the surface. The Madison Mallards agreed to play in Kenosha for the summer under a name that would be chosen by means of a “Name the Team” contest. Several ideas were submitted, but the name that rose to the top was “K-Town Bobbers,” which was submitted by Jacob Gunderson, and the rest is history. The Bobbers were featured in the 26-game Kenosha Series which started on July 15, 2020 as a part of the North- woods League “Pod” system of play. With fan safety regulations put in place, Historic Simmons Field hosted NWL baseball between Wednesdays and Sundays from July 15 through August 22. The limited crowd, which could not exceed 25% capacity, watched the Kingfish dominate the Bobbers for the majority of the season. The series concluded with the Kenosha Kingfish finishing 17-9, and being crowned the 2020 Northwoods League Regional Champions. The regional trophy can be seen on display in the American Outfitters Team Store. game preview The Kenosha Kingfish (3-1) take on the Traverse City Pit Spitters (4-0) Fri- day, June 4 at 6:05 p.m. at Historic Simmons Field. The Fish have won three straight games since they faced a loss on Opening Day, while the Pit Spitters have yet to lose this season. Kenosha faced Traverse City 12 times in 2019, going 4-8 against them on the season. The Kingfish ended the 2019 season 34-38, while the Pit Spitters finished 52-20. Ethan Peters (Loras) will take the mound for the Kingfish to start the two-game match-up against Traverse City. In the 2021 college season, Pe- ters pitched 37 innings, striking out 55 and walking only 15. He gave up five earned runs during the season, and finished with an ERA of 1.22. Peters has pitched three innings for the Fish so far this season, giving up one hit and striking out five with no runs allowed. Rylan Tinsley (Sacramento State) will make his Pit Spitter debut today against the Kingfish. In the col- lege season, Tinsley threw 23.1 innings, struck out 21 and finished with an ERA of 10.03. Kirk Liebert (Kentucky) is hot right now, batting .421 with eight hits and seven RBIs for the Kingfish. He’s followed by Luke Stephenson (Xavi- er) and McKay Barney (Washington) who are batting .385 and .333 respec- tively. The Pit Spitters offense is currently led by Trey Truitt (North Caro- lina State) who is hitting .467 in 15 at bats with three extra base hits. He’s followed by Aidan Brewer (Hillsdale College) who is batting .333 with four runs and three RBIs. The Kingfish will play Traverse City again Saturday, June 5 at 6:05 p.m. before travelling to Fond Du Lac Sunday, June 6 for the first game of an away-home match up. local kingfish players Kingfish alumni Kingfish staff Steve Schmidt Vern Sternman Conor Caloia Owner Owner Owner Steve Malliet Ryne Goralski Rustin Buysse President General Manager Assistant General Manager of Ticket Sales Alyssa Hill Max Kupfer Marketing & Partnership Ticket Sales Manager Activation Director coaching staff Mike Porcaro Field Manager Last Roster shop new merch Shop Online or In Store!.

UNI BASEBALL CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF WINNING Dating back to 1893, no University of Northern Iowa athletic team has won more games than the Panther baseball program. This season, UNI baseball opens its lOOth season with 952 wins all-time. (No baseball team was fielded in 1903-04, 1909-10 and 1943-45.) Originally begun when the school was known as Iowa State Normal School, the baseball team has represented the school when it was also known as Iowa State Teachers College and the State College of Iowa before assuming its present title in 1967. Starting in the years with Captain Avery as coach of the first two squads, the Panthers have built a program that thrives on hard working young men dedicated to being the best they can be on the diamond and in the classroom. Last year was no exception, as five Panthers; Ryan McGuire, Kevin Briggeman, Greg Woodin, Scott Sobkowiak and Aaron Houdeshell were named academic all-MVC by the sports information directors of the league.
