These revisions are made here by resurrecting two genera to contain segregate clades of Tabebuia. Roseodendron Miranda consists of the two species with spathaceous calices of similar texture to the corolla. Handroanthus Mattos comprises the principally yellow flowered species with an indumentum of hairs covering the leaves and calyx. The species of Handroanthus are also characterized by having extremely dense wood containing copious quantities of lapachol. Tabebuia is restricted to those species with white to red or rarely yellow flowers and having an indumentum of stalked or sessile lepidote scales. While foraging, many species wander over large areas that include both open and closed habitats. In this study, I examined parrot foraging activity during a brief synchronous and massive flowering in August 1998 in a tecoma savanna (dominated by Tabebuia aurea) in the southern Pantanal. Six parrot species, ranging from the small Brotogeris chiriri to the large Amazona aestiva, foraged for T. aurea nectar, but Nandayus nenday was by far the major nectar consumer, and the results of each of their visits, like those of the other species, was damage of a substantial proportion of the existing flower crop. Parrots foraged mostly during the afternoon, when nectar concentration tended to be higher. Nevertheless, compared to bird-pollinated flowers, which produce copious nectar, T. aurea had a smaller mean nectar volume per flower. Hence, presumably the amount of damage wreaked by these parrots resulted from their efforts to obtain part of their daily energy and water requirements.

The most recent studies about the genus Tabebuia and Handroanthus recognize two and six native species in Argentina, and one exotic cultivated species of Handroanthus in urban streets. Nevertheless, the genera are not completely understood, because some taxonomic conflicts are mentioned for the NW of Argentina (NWA). New collections made in Salta and Jujuy, and the revision of an important number of herbarium samples have confirmed a very high variability among the populations of the NWA region, and the subsistence of conflictive situations that prevented the correct identification of the species. Consequently, we considered it was necessary to make the revision of the genus analizing comprehensive material including all the phenological phases, in order to study most characters of every plant organ (young leaves, mature leaves, inflorescences, flowers, fruits and seeds). Our results indicate that the number of native taxa of Handroanthus is seven, including a new variety, and two of Tabebuia. Besides, another cultivated species of Tabebuia was identified, so there are two exotic taxa.

Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Tabebeuia aurea (Bignoniaceae) is used in the treatment of bronchitis, grippes (viral diseases), anti- inflammatory agent and stem bark is used for treatment of cancer. The present study has is to evaluate antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of alcohol and aqueous extracts of Tabebeuia aurea leaves. Both extracts showed dose dependent activity. The antinociceptive activity was investigated using hot plate, acetic acid induced writhing and formalin induced paw licking methods. Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated using carrageenan induced paw oedema method. Alcohol extract (500 mg/kg) showed highest 76.92% inhibition of inflammation after 24 hrs. Both the extracts produced increased in latency time compared to vehicle but alcohol extract showed highest activity after 150 min in hot plate method (4.63 ± 0.08 sec) and inhibit nocipeptive response in both phase. Extracts also produced significant inhibition of writhing. The experimental data demonstrates that the alcohol leaf extract of Tabebeuia aurea have excellent antinociceptive and anti- inflammatory activity.

GAVALI* Gujarat Ecology Society, Synergy House, Subhanpura, Vadodara – 390023, Gujarat, India Abstract Garden biodiversity is an integral part of the urban ecosystem and play an important role in improving green infrastructure and aid in climate change adaptations. Little research is available on the floral diversity of the parks and gardens. The present study is an attempt to document the floral diversity of 77 gardens in Vadodara city and elucidate trends based on the size of the gardens. Study indicated presence of 217 species belonging to 72 families from the gardens of Vadodara city. The floristic data revealed that around 53% of the species represented indigenous species and 47% belonged to exotic species. Paper concluded that diversity is more in the small gardens as compared to large sized garden, where plantation of few species in undertaken. Species suitable to the semi-arid climate with low water requirement dominated the gardens indicative of better management practices and adapt to climate change. This work describes allozyme polymorphisms in three Amazon parrot species - the Blue-fronted Amazon (Amazona aestiva), the Orange- winged Amazon (Amazona amazonica), and the Festive Amazon (Amazona festiva) -, and provides useful data for the evaluation of their genetic variability. We electrophoretically analyzed blood samples from 68 wild-caught individu- als, maintained in captivity in three Brazilian zoos. Eight of the ten studied enzyme loci exhibited polymorphism. Glucosephosphate isomerase (Gpi) proved to be a diagnostic locus for the identification of these Amazon species. The expected average heterozygosity of the Blue-fronted Amazon (0.060) differed significantly from the expected heterozygosities of the Orange-winged Amazon and the Festive Amazon (0.040 and 0.039, respectively). This result was discussed as a consequence of hybridization between two geographic A. aestiva subspecies, and alternatively as a particular trait of this species. Genetic variability of the Blue-fronted Amazon compared to birds in general is not low on a species-wide level, despite the fact that this parrot is one of the most illegally traded species. Allozyme analysis proved to be an useful tool in monitoring the genetic variation within the genus Amazona and can be applied in the management program of other threatened species of this genus.

El presente documento se constituye en el instrumento estratégico que permitirá orientar la gestión del área protegida, hacia un proceso de mejora continua a través de acciones estratégicas para el mediano y largo plazo. El Plan de Manejo está orientado a conservar la diversidad biológica, el mantenimiento de la calidad ambiental y a mejorar las condiciones de vida de los actores que viven dentro el Área Natural de Manejo Integrado, respondiendo de esta manera a los objetivos y políticas del Sistema Nacional de Áreas Protegidas (SNAP). Es así que compartiendo visiones de desarrollo y conservación, múltiples demandas y colectivas preocupaciones en torno a la problemática socioambiental con los habitantes y actores del Área Protegida y su entorno, se ha elaborado el Plan de Manejo equilibrando objetivos de conservación de la biodiversidad y desarrollo en un territorio cuya riqueza natural es fundamental para el departamento de Santa Cruz y el País.
