FROM THE ACTING COMMANDANT

The first Quarter of 2019 was insanely busy, as Academy continued to recover from the passing of Glen Diebold on September 26, 2018. We also migrated Academy from its separate server into SFI.org, so that the STARFLEET branding could be applied to Academy, and to eliminate the costs of an extra domain and web hosting.

We had to close Glen’s unfinished projects that he left behind, and audit and retire those colleges that were not performing at minimum standards. We were not lacking in volunteers to direct those that were left.

Survival Studies (COSS), a favorite among many students, was taken over by myself, the author of the first version of the college. The COSS has gone through a major rewrite and reformat. Long exams were divided into 25-point multiple choice or True and False exams. Three of the four schools are reopened, and the fourth will be open soon, with more exams to be added. Wherever an exam was split into 2 or more exams, the existing graduates was copied over with their grades and completion dates. Members will see confirmations for exams dated back to the date the original exam was completed.

The Institute of MACO continues to gather closed exams from related colleges, incorporating them into IMACO. Long exams from SpecOps and Military Studies are being processed in the same manner as those of the COSS and added to the IMACO, under the capable hands of Kelli Caplette and TJ Allen.

Two poorly-performing Institutes were merged into related Institutes.

Academy has over 1,500 students enrolled. Vacancies within the faculty are being replaced by ‘newbies”, who bring new energy and new ideas into the curriculum.

We are always looking for dedicated volunteers in both Academics and in Support. Some positions open to newbies are : Director, Asst. Director, Ghost writers for both new exams and conversion of exams into Multiple-choice and True-False, data entry people for the SFI DB and for Moodle, and other duties as assigned. Training is provided for all positions.

If you are interested in helping out in Academy, please contact the Academic Coordinator, Jill Rayburn, at [email protected] . We keep a list of interested members, and refer to it when there is a vacancy.

25 'Star Trek: Discovery' Tried Out Over 400 Spock Actors Before Casting Ethan Peck

"Star Trek: Discovery" showrunner Alex Kurtzmann auditioned over 400 actors when trying to find an actor to take on the iconic role of Spock in Discovery Season 2 before choosing Ethan Peck - a process the producer says was crucial to getting the casting right.

"It's always dangerous because the ‘TOS’ charac- ters are so beloved and everyone has such strong feelings and strong opinions about each character. And if the recasting or the characterization itself doesn’t meet up with people's imagination, then we get into trouble," Kurtzmann told Variety's TV Take podcast.

“We did an extremely deep dive on casting and spoke with the Nimoy family and had them bless the casting."

"When Ethan came in–and when I say he was over the 400th actor we had seen, I mean that literally–what I saw in him were two things." he continued. "First of all, he conveyed to me with–I don’t know if it was his body language or the way he held himself during the read–that he too was struggling through something similar to what Spock is struggling with…I think that coupled with the fact the he was so clearly willing to dive wholeheartedly into this once he understood what was actually happening and who he was playing. He was so beautifully committed to saying 'I'm gonna go as deep as I can go here. I'm gonna go as deep into this character and I'm terrified. Humble and terrified. I'm living in Leonard Nimoy's shadow and I'm living in Zachary Quinto's shadow.'"

26 New 'Star Trek: Year Five' Comic Will Bring the Enterprise's Mission to a Close

Fans of the original "Star Trek" series know that the show's opening monologue mentions the Enterprise's "five year mission" - and now a new IDW comic book will explore the final year of that journey, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Star Trek: Year Five" will feature a succession of creators, including writers Brandon Easton, Jody Houser, and Jim McCann, while co-writers Colin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing will pen the first arc.

According to Lanzing, Year Five is "a vital, hard-hitting, character-focused look at Captain Kirk on his last year in command."

"[Star Trek: Year Five] will have huge ripple effects, from the outbreak of war in the Alpha Quadrant to an unprecedented strain of trust with Spock," Lanzing explained. "We'll turn a mirror on modern society, just as [the original television series] did in the 1960s, and go boldly towards meaningful, heartfelt stories."

No interior artists for the series have been named, though Greg Hildebrandt will paint the first issue cover.

"Star Trek: Year Five #1" will launch in April from IDW.

27 James ’s ‘’ Sequel at Paramount Gets a ‘Dark’ Title

The sixth and potentially final installment in the “Terminator” franchise from producer has a new title from Paramount. The film will be called “Terminator: Dark Fate,” an individual with knowledge of the film tells TheWrap.

Though he’s directing the “Avatar” films, Cameron is heavily involved in this film that reunites Arnold Schwarzeneg- ger with Linda Hamilton, the original Sarah Connor, and it is the first time the two have been on screen together since “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.”

While the plot for the film is unknown, Cameron has promised that it will have a sense of closure to it and align more closely with the events of the second film, as opposed to the subsequent sequels.

“Deadpool” director Tim Miller directs and is credited with writing the story alongside David Ellison. Josh Friedman, David S. Goyer, Billy Ray and Justin Rhodes all wrote the screenplay.

Also starring in “Terminator: Dark Fate” are Mackenzie Davis and Natalia Reyes, who appeared in a first look photo opposite Hamilton.

“Dark Fate” opens in theaters from Paramount and Skydance on Nov. 1. It will open on a busy fall weekend oppo- site wide releases “Charlie’s Angels” from Universal, the Edward Norton crime drama “Motherless Brooklyn” from Warner Bros. and the animated “Arctic Dogs” from Entertainment Studios.

28 The X-Men Go Where No Mutants Have Gone Before in 'Dark Phoenix'

It's official: The X-Men are going into space.

Two new trailers for Fox's latest X-Men film, "X-Men: Dark Phoenix," launch mutants into space on what appears to be a rescue mission that goes oh, so wrong. In the first trailer, we catch a slight hint of a NASA space shuttle caught in a cosmic explosion in low Earth orbit.

A subsequent international trailer, released March 5, offers an even more tantalizing view, showing the X-Men f lying to the rescue of a space shuttle in distress.

"In 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix,' the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. According to 20th Century Fox, the situation just gets worse. "Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain."

Things continue to deteriorate. "With Jean spiraling out of control and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together.

There are some awesome space shuttle views and a blue-and-yellow X-Men spacesuit! Also, apparently Nightcrawler can teleport just fine in a spacesuit, but is there room for his tail? Actually, upon closer inspection, the mutant isn't wearing a true spacesuit after all; the garment looks like a helmet was duct-taped to his X-Men uniform. (Duct tape does solve all in space.)

To be clear, not all of "X-Men: Dark Phoenix" occurs in space. But based on the trailers' space rescue scenes, in this film, the X-Men are about to boldly go where no mutant has gone before!

"X-Men: Dark Phoenix" hits theaters June 6. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-q8C_c-nlM (Original trailer) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5v7Ch4bxzc (2nd trailer) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvjwrcJj_qQ (3rd trailer)

29 We Finally Know When Our Milky Way will Crash into the Andromeda Galaxy

Our Milky Way galaxy will survive in its current form a bit longer than some astronomers had thought, a new study suggests. The monster collision between our Milky Way and fellow spiral galaxy Andromeda will occur about 4.5 billion years from now, according to the new research, which is based on observations made by Europe's Gaia spacecraft. Some prominent previous estimates had predicted the crash would happen significantly sooner, in about 3.9 billion years. "This finding is crucial to our understanding of how evolve and interact," Gaia project scientist Timo Prusti, who was not involved in the study, said in a statement. Gaia launched in December of 2013 to help researchers create the best 3D map of the Milky Way ever constructed. The spacecraft has been precisely monitoring the positions and movements of huge numbers of and other cosmic objects; the mission team aims to track more than 1 billion stars by the time Gaia shuts its sharp eyes for good.

In case you’ve forgotten…..

The Voyager Golden Records are two phonograph records that were included aboard both Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977. The records contain sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth, and are intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or for future humans, who may find them. The records are a sort of time capsule.

Although neither Voyager spacecraft is heading toward any particular star, Voyager 1 will pass within 1.6 light-years' distance of the star Gliese 445, currently in the constellation , in about 40,000 years.

Carl Sagan noted that "The spacecraft will be encountered and the record played only if there are advanced space-faring civilizations in interstellar space, but the launching of this 'bottle' into the cosmic 'ocean' says something very hopeful about life on this planet."

Everything We Know About Jordan Peele's The Twilight Zone Reboot

Black Mirror is often hailed as The Twilight Zone reboot of our time, but now the creepy sci-fi series itself is coming back for another generation, courtesy ofGet Out and Us mastermind Jordan Peele. He will both produce and host the new series for CBS All Access, and he's already lining up a stacked cast for the new series, which is expected to pick up the mantle of the social horror that has remained such a cultural mainstay since its run in the late '50s and early '60s.

Here's what we know about The Twilight Zone so far:

It will premiere in April. The CBS All Access series will debut with two episodes on Monday, April 1, 2019. Subsequent new episodes will be available on demand weekly on Thursdays beginning April 11, 2019.

Jordan Peele knows this is a very big deal. When his new version of The Twilight Zone was announced, Peele expressed a lot of respect and admiration for the man who'd previously carried the show, saying, "Rod Serling was an uncompromising vision- ary who not only shed light on social issues of his time, but prophesied issues of ours. I'm honored to carry on his legacy to a new generation of audiences as the gatekeeper of The Twilight Zone."

It'll tackle the social issues of now. Just as the socio-horror anthology series shed creepy light on all the weird things happen- ing in its day, the new Twilight Zone will also draw from the modern experience. As Peele told TV Guide in 2017, "Too many times this year it's felt we were living in a twilight zone, and I can't think of a better moment to reintroduce it to modern audi- ences."

The cast is full of favorites already. Although details on the plot points of the series have so far been kept close to the chest, we do know some of the major television stars who will feature in certain episodes of the new Twilight Zone. Sanaa Lathan will appear in an episode called "Rewind" that is expected to be a reboot of an episode from the 2002-03 revival with the same name, featuring a person who can turn back time with a tape recorder. Adam Scott will star in a segment that's sure to exacerbate that fear of flying, titled "Nightmare at 30,000 Feet." The segment is expected to breathe modern life into the iconic 1963 episode featuring William Shatner as a man who loses it after spotting something on the wing of an in-flight plane.

Meanwhile, Kumail Nanjiani will star in an as-yet-unnamed episode written by Key & Peele scribe Alex Rubens, and John Cho will be joined by Allison Tolman, Jacob Tremblay and Erica Tremblay for an episode called "The Wunderkind." Another epi- sode will feature DeWanda Wise and Jessica Williams alongside Lucinda Dryzek, Jefferson White and Jonathan Whitesell.

Other prominent faces cast on the series include Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead), Ike Barinholtz (The Mindy Project), Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story), Rhea Seehorn (Better Call Saul) and Luke Kirby (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel).

There's still time to watch old episodes. The original The Twilight Zone made its television debut on Oct. 2, 1959. Every epi- sode of the original series, which aired on CBS, is available to stream via CBS All Access

34 Aladdin: First look at Will Smith's Genie horrifies just about everyone

Disney released the first proper trailer for Guy Ritchie's live-action Aladdin remake. In it, we got to see Mena Massoud as Aladdin, witnessed the magnificent Agrabah and the Cave of Wonders, and caught a little glimpse of Jafar and Iago, too, along with Aladdin and Jasmine's first meeting. Which was nice. Then, there came the big reveal - Will Smith as the Genie. Previously, Smith had appeared in some glossy promotional photos for the forthcoming film looking, well, basically like himself, but dressed as a Genie. However, the actor had warned fans that in the actual film, he would indeed be blue, like Disney's animated version of the character, famously voiced by the late Robin Williams. It's safe to say that no one was prepared for the sight that awaited them when Smith's Genie lurched up on screen. If you haven't seen it yet, strap yourself in, because you're about to have an experience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=9&v=7hHECMVOq7g
