Nach Redaktionsschluss Zu unserem grossen Bedauern können kirchliche Reaktionen auf den Libanon-Krieg in dieser Jahresfolge keinen Raum mehr finden. Diese und andere Reaktionen, auch auf unser unten angeführtes Schreiben***, folgen in der Jahresfolge XXXV/1983*. Auch wir haben protestiert***. Dem >L'Osservatore Romano<, Wochenausgabe in deutscher Sprache (12/42), Vatikanstadt, 15. 10. 1982, entnehmen wir folgende Reaktion: Johannes Paul II. nach dem Angelusgebet nach der Heiligsprechungsfeier von Maximilian Kolbe am 10. Oktober 1982 In italienischer Sprache fuhr der Papst fort: Die heutige Heiligsprechungsfeier legt uns nahe, auch an die vielen anderen Menschenleben zu denken, die sich im Zweiten Weltkrieg dem selbstlosen Dienst am Nächsten, vor allem am er- niedrigten, leidenden und bedürftigen Bruder opferten. Zu ihnen gehört auch Janusz Korczak""-, der polnische Pädagoge jüdischer Abkunft, der im August 1942 in einem Vernich- tungslager bewusst den Tod auf sich nahm zusammen mit einer Gruppe jüdischer Waisen- kinder, die er im Ghetto von Warschau betreut hatte. Das tragische Schicksal so vieler Juden, die erbarmungslos in den Konzentrationslagern umge- bracht wurden, hat schon die klare und unwiderrufliche Verurteilung durch das Gewissen der Menschheit erfahren. Aber leider wiederholen sich auch in unserer Zeit verbrecherische Ausbrü- che von antisemitischem Hass. Mit tief betrübtem Herzen denke ich an das jüdische Kind, das gestern hier in Rom sein Leben verloren hat, und an die anderen bei dem ruchlosen Attentat an der Synagoge verletzten Personen. In Erneuerung meines lebhaften Bedauerns über diesen schauerlichen terroristischen Akt emp- fehle ich dieses unschuldige Opfer dem barmherzigen Gott und bitte ihn um Trost für die Eltern und Verwandten sowie um Genesung für die Verletzten. Ich drücke der ganzen jüdi- schen Gemeinde von Rom meine tiefempfundene Solidarität aus. Vgl. dazu auch u. S. 2. Der polnische Jude, Arzt, Pädagoge und Schriftsteller Dr. Henryk Goldszmit, mit dem Pseudonym janusz Korczak, wurde 1972 posthum mit dem Friedenspreis des Börsenvereins des Deutschen Buchhandels ausgezeichnet. Korczak wurde am 22. 7. 1878 oder 1879 in der assimilierten Familie eines jüdischen Rechtsanwalts in Warschau geboren. Seit 1911 wohnte er ständig im Waisenhaus für jüdische Kinder, das im Herbst 1940 von den Nazis in das neugegründete Warschauer Ghetto verlegt wurde. Korczak teilte das Schicksal seiner Zöglinge. Am 22. 7. 1942 begann die Massenausrottung des Ghettos. Er hätte sich wiederholt retten können. Die Mörder hatten ihm, dem berühmten Erzieher, die Freiheit angeboten. Er schlug sie aus, beglei- tete seine Kinder in den Tod. Zum letztenmal gingen die 200 Kinder in geschlossener Ordnung aus dem Waisenhaus durch die Warschauer Strassen, die beiden Erzieher — Dr. Henryk Goldszmit sowie Frau Stefania Wilczynska — voran zum »Um- schlagplatz«, in die Waggons nach Treblinka in die Gaskammern.     The Convent Children The Rescue of Jewish Children in Polish Convents During the Holocaust1 Nahum Bogner The rescue of Jewish children in convents during the Holocaust is a subject that evokes intense emotions and sensitivities among both Jews and Christians, as it is intertwined with the controversial issue of the attitude of the Church toward the Jews at that time. The Jewish collective consciousness associates the affair with the conversion of many of these children to Christianity—as if their rescuers effected their deliverance in order to stalk innocent souls and exploit their existential distress for missionary motives. Christians, in contrast, consider the very hint of such a suspicion as an expression of ingratitude on the part of people who do not respect the death-defying devotion and Christian conscience of those priests and nuns who risked their lives in order to save Jews. It is a complex issue that penetrates to the depths of the soul. This article examines the case of the children who survived the Holocaust in the convents of Poland. Poland is, of course, one of the largest Catholic countries in Europe and one in which the Church had a special stature and exerted strong influence over its believers. 1 This article is part of a book in progress on the rescue of children with assumed identities in Poland. Convents in Occupied Poland Catholic Poland, flanked by the mostly Orthodox Russia to the east and predominantly Lutheran Germany to the west, was peppered until World War II with sundry types of convents and monasteries. These were mostly tenanted by women, and even the Church establishment was not always well acquainted with all of them.

ABSTRACT In this thesis, I intend to show that it is possible to offer a partial explanation for the fact that pre-war Polish-Jewish fiction has been recognised only to a very limited extent in Britain. In doing this, I embrace the limitations and unaddressed areas of polysystem theory, an approach that leads to several contributions to this theory so that it is more suited to look at marginal translations. In this study, the source context and the largely hypothetical target context (given the predominant lack of English translations) of pre-war Polish-Jewish fiction are conceptualised as systems informed by a variety of factors. I begin by introducing polysystem theory in Chapter 1, where I also explain the rationale for its use in this study. I also briefly define pre-war Polish-Jewish fiction and elaborate on the nature of its visibility in Britain.

First printing, April 2005 Copyright © 2005 by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum The Third Reich aimed at the total annihilation of European Jewry. With the goal of Jewish annihilation came a range of brutal assaults aimed at degrading and debasing the victims before their murder. How did Jewish children fit into the German policies of destruction? How did these children and their families cope with the barrage of life- threatening assaults? These seemingly simple questions have no ready answers. This paper explores the nature of children’s experiences and how these fit into the political, social, and familial contexts of the Holocaust. Faced with an array of humiliating attacks, Jewish families devised coping strategies to protect and save their children, offering glimmers of hope under inhumane circumstances. The Germans did not apply the actual measures of destruction to all Jews at once. Rather, they assaulted parts of the Jewish population at different times and places, with different degrees of ruthlessness. Under German occupation, then, the Jewish population traveled on different roads toward the same destination. A mixture of political, economic, and biological ideologies determined these variations.
