  • A Fresh Perspective on the History of Hasidic Judaism
eSharp Issue 20: New Horizons A Fresh Perspective on the History of Hasidic Judaism Eva van Loenen (University of Southampton) Introduction In this article, I shall examine the history of Hasidic Judaism, a mystical,1 ultra-orthodox2 branch of Judaism, which values joyfully worshipping God’s presence in nature as highly as the strict observance of the laws of Torah3 and Talmud.4 In spite of being understudied, the history of Hasidic Judaism has divided historians until today. Indeed, Hasidic Jewish history is not one monolithic, clear-cut, straightforward chronicle. Rather, each scholar has created his own narrative and each one is as different as its author. While a brief introduction such as this cannot enter into all the myriad divergences and similarities between these stories, what I will attempt to do here is to incorporate and compare an array of different views in order to summarise the history of Hasidism and provide a more objective analysis, which has not yet been undertaken. Furthermore, my historical introduction in Hasidic Judaism will exemplify how mystical branches of mainstream religions might develop and shed light on an under-researched division of Judaism. The main focus of 1 Mystical movements strive for a personal experience of God or of his presence and values intuitive, spiritual insight or revelationary knowledge. The knowledge gained is generally ‘esoteric’ (‘within’ or hidden), leading to the term ‘esotericism’ as opposed to exoteric, based on the external reality which can be attested by anyone. 2 Ultra-orthodox Jews adhere most strictly to Jewish law as the holy word of God, delivered perfectly and completely to Moses on Mount Sinai.

This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Housing Studies on Volume 33, 2018. Schelling-Type Micro-Segregation in a Hassidic Enclave of Stamford-Hill Corresponding Author: Dr Shlomit Flint Ashery Email [email protected] Abstract This study examines how non-economic inter- and intra-group relationships are reflected in residential pattern, uses a mixed methods approach designed to overcome the principal weaknesses of existing data sources for understanding micro residential dynamics. Micro-macro qualitative and quantitative analysis of the infrastructure of residential dynamics offers a holistic understanding of urban spaces organised according to cultural codes. The case study, the Haredi community, is composed of sects, and residential preferences of the Haredi sect members are highly affected by the need to live among "friends" – other members of the same sect. Based on the independent residential records at the resolution of a single family and apartment that cover the period of 20 years the study examine residential dynamics in the Hassidic area of Stamford-Hill, reveal and analyse powerful Schelling-like mechanisms of residential segregation at the apartment, building and the near neighbourhood level. Taken together, these mechanisms are candidates for explaining the dynamics of residential segregation in the area during 1995-2015. Keywords Hassidic, Stamford-Hill, Segregation, Residential, London Acknowledgments This research was carried out under a Marie Curie Fellowship PIEF-GA-2012-328820 while based at Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) University College London (UCL). 1 1. Introduction The dynamics of social and ethnoreligious segregation, which form part of our urban landscape, are a central theme of housing studies.

  • Rabbi Andre Ungar Z’L (21 July 1929–5 May 2020)
Rabbi Andre Ungar z’l (21 July 1929–5 May 2020) Jonathan Magonet abbi Ungar was born in Budapest to Bela and Frederika Ungar. The Rfamily lived in hiding with false identity papers from 1944 under the German occupation.1 After the war, a scholarship brought him to the UK where he studied at Jews’ College, then part of University College, and subsequently studied philosophy. Feeling uncomfortable within Orthodoxy, he met with Rabbi Harold Reinhart and Rabbi Leo Baeck and eventually became an assistant rabbi at West London Synagogue. In 1954 he obtained his doctorate in philosophy and was ordained as a rabbi through a programme that preceded the formal creation of Leo Baeck College in 1956. In 1955 he was appointed as rabbi at the pro- gressive congregation in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Very soon his fiery anti-Apartheid sermons were condemned in the Afrikaans newspapers and received mixed reactions from the Jewish community. In December 1956 he was served with a deportation order and was forced to leave the country. He wrote with passion about his South African experience some ten years later in the book Resistance against Tyranny2 A symposium edited by his friend and fellow Hungarian Eugene Heimler whose important account of his Holocaust experience Night of the Mist Ungar had translated into English. I found that our own genteel white leisure and wealth was a thin veneer over a vast mass of coloured suffering; and that the distinction was arti- ficially created, maintained and, since the Nationalist victory of 1948, deliberately worsened day after day.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 F 7377 POLITI 58^S8i ABSTRACT The British left has confronted a dilemma in forming its attitude towards Israel in the postwar period. The establishment of the Jewish state seemed to force people on the left to choose between competing nationalisms - Israeli, Arab and later, Palestinian. Over time, a number of key developments sharpened the dilemma. My central focus is the evolution of thinking about Israel and the Middle East in the British Labour Party. I examine four critical periods: the creation of Israel in 1948; the Suez war in 1956; the Arab-Israeli war of 1967 and the 1980s, covering mainly the Israeli invasion of Lebanon but also the intifada. In each case, entrenched attitudes were called into question and longer-term shifts were triggered in the aftermath.

  • Blair and Israel
This is a chapter in my 2002 The Rise of New Labour, which is still available for virtually nothing on-line from Amazon and Abebooks. It originally appeared in Lobster 43 and seems worth reposting in the context of the Al Jazeera revelations about Israeli operations in British politics.1 Blair and Israel Robin Ramsay In January 1994, three months before John Smith’s death, the then shadow Home Secretary Tony Blair, with wife Cherie Booth, went on a trip to Israel at the Israeli government’s expense - a trip, incidentally, neither the Sopel nor Rentoul biographies of Blair mentioned.2 Blair had always been sympathetic to Israel, had shared chambers with Board of Deputies of British Jews President Eldred Tabachnik,3 and had joined the Labour Friends of Israel on becoming an MP. Two months after returning from Israel, Tony Blair was introduced to Michael Levy at a dinner party by Gideon Meir, the number two in the Israeli embassy in London.4Levy was a retired businessman who had made his money creating and then selling a successful record company and had become a major fund-raiser for Jewish charities. Levy was ‘dazzled by Blair’s drive and religious commitment’ and the two men became friends.5 A month later the leader of the Labour Party, John Smith, died, and Blair won the leadership election contest with Gordon Brown – in some accounts with financial 1 See for example <http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/01/israels- parliamentary-plot-uk-politicians-170107220710691.html>. 2 See the profile of Michael Levy in the Daily Express 26 June 2000.

  • Archives This Page Lists the Approximately 1,900 Archival Items
Archives This page lists the approximately 1,900 archival items that are held by the N.E.S.T. Special Collections. The majority of these items are from the Syria Mission of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM), and later of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. (PCUSA), as well as affiliated institutions, such as the American Mission Press, the Chouir Conference Center, the Gerard Institution, the Anglo-American Church and N.E.S.T. itself. Items range from personal diaries of missionaries, correspondences, institutional records, brochures, school yearbooks, newspapers, pamphlets and stamps. Photographs and maps are listed in separate indexes due to their size, location in the Special Collection Room and descriptive details. The archives of the Syria Mission were originally organized by missionary James Willoughby in 1966, the index of which is archival item 432. Willoughby's arrangement was not preserved during the transference of the N.E.S.T. library to its location on Ras Beirut in 1974. As such, in 2012 a project was initiated under the title Preserving Protestant Heritage in the Middle East (PPHME) with the aim of reorganizing N.E.S.T.’s Special Collections. During the first phase of the PPHME the archival items were indexed according to the order that they were found. As a result, only some items are grouped according to affiliated organization. Part of the next phase of the PPHME project is to organize the archival material into subject areas. As such, each archival item is given a temporary inventory number (as opposed to a more permanent shelf mark).
