Melvin Aikens The culture history ofthe northeastern Great Basin, as currently written by the archaeological profession, is silent as to the view ofGosiute and Shoshone natives about their own ancestors. The goal ofthis dissertation is the infusion ofPunown (interrelated Numic speaking peoples) epistemology into mainstream anthropological interpretation, as provided through North American Desert West prehistory. The hypothesized Numic expansion into the Northeast Great Basin, according to which the Punown natives now resident throughout the region are very recent immigrants, is problematic on several grounds. In the dissertation I show that late population movement into this region by Numic ancestors has not been demonstrated. After a hundred years ofresearch no consensus yet exists as to the origins ofthe Northern Uto-Aztecan speaking Numic peoples (Punown). In spite ofthat, and in spite ofthe f~ that it takes no account ofthe natives' own view oftheir origins, the Numic Expansion Hypothesis is being used in a way by .. r v some archaeologists and cultural resource managers that denies to the Punown their cultural heritage. The archaeological record ofthe region, extending back into deep time, is rich in the similarities it shows with the native Punown cultures ofthe contact-historic period. The epistemology and spiritual beliefs ofthe Punown also assert their cultural continuity with the ancient traditions documented in that archaeological recoret;It is not acceptable that a scientific hypothesis impedes native people's role in the care and stewardship ofsites and places throughout the region that their own spiritual traditions tell them they are responsible for. The mainstream anthropological concept ofscience and the epistemology ofthe Punown are opposed diametrically. Punown view the world and its people as interconnected through the Sacred Earth Matrix, while anthropologists see the human world as bifurcated from nature. Punown understand archaeology and relatedness spiritually, while archaeologists see dead objects in an "objectified" way. Conformity to the existing paradigm, with its persistent building and rebuilding ofearlier untenable Euroamerican views ofNumic origins, makes the Punown outsiders to the region in which they live. This goes on even though many scholars, reviewing the case for a Numic Expansion, find it seriously lacking. Infusion ofPunown epistemology into current archaeological practice offers a basis for pooling Punown and mainstream anthropological approaches to the prehistory ofthe Desert West. A mutually enhancing research partnership based on beneficial objectives is advocated; this will go far to repair a strained relationship that now exists between Punown and archaeological researchers, and result in a fuller and richer history for all to contemplate. ---- q VI CURRICULUM VITAE NAME OF AUTHOR: Melvin G. China Corresponding author: Shi Huang, [email protected] Abstract Morphological and archaeological studies suggest that the Americas were first occupied by non- Mongoloids with Australo-Melanesian traits (the Paleoamerican hypothesis), which was subsequently followed by Southwest Europeans coming in along the pack ice of the North Atlantic Ocean (the Solutrean hypothesis) and by East Asians and Siberians arriving by way of the Bering Strait. Past DNA studies, however, have produced different accounts. With a better understanding of genetic diversity, we have now reinterpreted public DNA data. The ~9500 year old Kennewick Man skeleton with Austral-Melanesian affinity from North America was about equally related to Europeans and Africans, least related to East Asians among present-day people, and most related to the ~65000 year old Neanderthal Mezmaiskaya-1 from Adygea Russia among ancient Eurasian DNAs. The ~12700 year old Anzick-1 of the Clovis culture was most related to the ~18720 year old El Miron of the Magdalenian culture in Spain among ancient DNAs.

    1 The Kennewick Man as ‘person’: Ethical Considerations and Cultural Perspectives Haley Adams The case of the Kennewick man is a well­known example in anthropological literature of the ethical issues surrounding the control and ownership of human remains. In 1996, the skeleton of a prehistoric Paleoamerican man was discovered on the bank of the Columbia River in Kennewick, Washington (Preston). Radiocarbon dating found that the skeleton was 8358 ± 21 RC years old, which sparked interest within the scientific community (Jantz 29). At the same time, five Native American tribes claimed the remains under NAGPRA “with the intention of reburial without scientific analysis” (Swain 156). The skeleton of the Kennewick man was found on land owned by the US Army Corp of Engineers, who became an additional party in the dispute, further complicating the case. The scientists brought the case to court, as the potential reburial of the remains threatened to prevent their ability to study the valuable remains. A study conducted using cranial analysis revealed that the closest relatives of the skeleton were Polynesian people or the Ainu people of Japan rather than Native Americans (Jantz 513). This finding was significant in that it suggested an alternative theory for the peopling of North America. In 2004, the court ruled that NAGPRA did not apply based on this scientific evidence and ruled that the scientists could continue studying the remains (Preston). However, the case remains highly controversial and Kennewick man remains in storage in the Burke Museum awaiting his fate. Archaeology, Museums, and Politics in the 21st Century Meliora Seminar Proposal Elizabeth Colantoni Department of Religion and Classics In January 2017, the self-proclaimed Islamic State in Iraq and Syria used explosives to destroy significant portions of the ancient Roman theater at the archaeological site of Palmyra. Under cover of night, workers for the city of New Orleans removed a statue of Confederate leader Jefferson Davis from public property in that city in May 2017. In January 2018, the home and office of Manhattan billionaire Michael H. Steinhardt were raided by local authorities to seize archaeological objects that, according to the New York county district attorney, had been looted from Italy and Greece. The Greek government then requested the repatriation of many of the objects in question. As these incidents show, historical objects, monuments, and sites are not relegated to the past. They are the building blocks of modern identities and politics, and, as such, they are at the center of current events on a daily basis. The Meliora seminar I propose to teach, “Who Owns the Past? Archaeology, Museums, and Politics in the 21st Century,” will examine current issues concerning the ownership, protection, and presentation of cultural heritage, including particularly archaeological and historical objects, monuments, and sites. In the course, we will ask: Who decides what cultural heritage is significant? Who should determine how archaeological and historical sites are presented to the public? Should private individuals be allowed to purchase objects of historical or archaeological significance? Should museums work to provide collections that are encyclopedic in scope, with material from all over the world? What moral and ethical responsibilities do museums have? Who owns cultural objects taken in the context of warfare? What constitutes a valid claim for the repatriation of an object? The course will begin with introductory information about archaeology, museum studies, and cultural heritage law.
