French and British Colonial Legacies in Education: A Natural Experiment in Cameroon Yannick Dupraz∗ 2015 most recent version: http://www.parisschoolofeconomics.eu/IMG/pdf/ jobmarket-paper-dupraz-pse.pdf Abstract. | Does colonial history matter for development? In Sub-Saharan Africa, economists have argued that the British colonial legacy was more growth-inducing than others, especially through its effect on education. This paper uses the division of German Kamerun between the British and the French after WWI as a natural experiment to identify the causal effect of colonizer identity on education. Using exhaustive geolocated census data, I estimate a border discontinuity for various cohorts over the 20th century: the British effect on education is positive for individuals of school age in the 1920s and 1930s; it quickly fades away in the late colonial period and eventually becomes negative, favoring the French side. In the most recent cohorts, I find no border discontinuity in primary education, but I do find a positive British effect in secondary school completion | likely explained by a higher rate of grade repetition in the francophone system. I also find a strong, positive British effect on the percentage of Christians for all cohorts. I argue that my results are best explained by supply factors: before WWII, the British colonial government provided incentives for missions to supply formal education and allowed local governments to open public schools, but the British effect was quickly smoothed away by an increase in French education investments in the late colonial period. Though the divergence in human capital did not persist, its effect on religion was highly persistent. -

International Journal of Development and Sustainability ISSN: 2186-8662 – www.isdsnet.com/ijds Volume 7 Number 4 (2018): Pages 1273-1285 ISDS Article ID: IJDS18032002 The Kribi deep sea port creation as a catalyst to population mobility and development Tende Renz Tichafogwe 1*, Fogwe Zephania Nji 2 1 Department of Geography, The University of Yaounde, Yaounde, Cameroon 2 Department of Geography and Planning, The University of Bamenda, Bamenda, Cameroon Abstract Portal towns have been a major determinant of population mobility and trickle-down development in their backyards in most developing countries. This paper examines the population dynamics and development spill overs of sea port construction to their host town. The Kribi Deep Sea Port is triggered by the visions 2035 philosophy/futurist paradigm of the Cameroonian government. This paper posits how the creation of the deep sea port has stimulated in-migration and development in Kribi. The study connotes how the concept of urban attractiveness enables this emerging town to draw onto it a wage earning population. Field observations in Kribi town and the port site were made once, every month for six months during which 86 inhabitants, the local and administrative authorities and port technicians were interviewed. Extensive secondary source research was as well used to obtain results. Findings revealed that the Kribi Deep Sea Port has led to a rapid population upsurge of 250% increase in 26 years as the population moved from 40,706 inhabitants in 1987 to 93,246 in 2005 and 102,000 in 2013. This growth has also fostered the development of the infrastructure of Kribi with a new urban town on 26000 hectares of land, an improved transport network and a host of industries. -

Open Linguistics 2021; 7: 244–300 Research Article Bruce Connell*, David Zeitlyn, Sascha Griffiths, Laura Hayward, and Marieke Martin Language ecology, language endangerment, and relict languages: Case studies from Adamawa (Cameroon-Nigeria) https://doi.org/10.1515/opli-2021-0011 received May 18, 2020; accepted April 09, 2021 Abstract: As a contribution to the more general discussion on causes of language endangerment and death, we describe the language ecologies of four related languages (Bà Mambila [mzk]/[mcu], Sombә (Somyev or Kila)[kgt], Oumyari Wawa [www], Njanga (Kwanja)[knp]) of the Cameroon-Nigeria borderland to reach an understanding of the factors and circumstances that have brought two of these languages, Sombә and Njanga, to the brink of extinction; a third, Oumyari, is unstable/eroded, while Bà Mambila is stable. Other related languages of the area, also endangered and in one case extinct, fit into our discussion, though with less focus. We argue that an understanding of the language ecology of a region (or of a given language) leads to an understanding of the vitality of a language. Language ecology seen as a multilayered phenom- enon can help explain why the four languages of our case studies have different degrees of vitality. This has implications for how language change is conceptualised: we see multilingualism and change (sometimes including extinction) as normative.
