NEWSLETTER 08, 23Rd OCTOBER 2015 NEWSLETTER 08, 23rd OCTOBER 2015 Dear Parent / Carer, HALF TERM All students return to school after half term on Monday 2nd November at 08.30am. Please stay safe during this half‐term, especially around Bonfire Night by attending an organised event. STEM / ENGINEERING WEEK From Monday 12th – Friday 16th October each student at Manchester Academy had two sessions in House Tutor Time where they learned about: ‐ The routes into Engineering ‐ The different types of engineering careers available to them ‐ Making the right subject choices at GCSE ‐ Other skills required In Science classes, every student received an engineering information booklet, while parents also received information. Parents were also invited to an Employability Evening where general career routes were discussed and also that engineering is a growth area within the British economy. The Maths department incorporated engineering challenges into the starters of their lessons in order to ensure that the connection was made with Maths and Engineering. We were privileged to have engineers speaking to groups of students. Our Rollercoaster Engineer impressed not only with her presentation but with her career! Igemi studied Aerospace Engineering at the University of Manchester. Her role involves ensuring the designs for new rollercoasters are safe. She then travels the world testing rollercoaster rides! After her presentation, Igemi was inundated with questions. We had an engineer from the construction company Laing O'Rourke. Bronagh spoke to our Key Stage 3 students and set them a ‘bridge challenge’. Students came back after lunch to ensure that their bridge designs still supported the specifications! An eco‐engineer addressed Science classes and then ran a workshop for our STEM students. Our students and partner feedback indicated that students enjoyed the presentations and had a greater understanding of the career pathways available into engineering. EUROPEAN RESTART A HEART DAY: LOVED ONES SAVE LIVES Manchester Academy students were given heart start training by “Green Watch” from GMF & RS (Moss Side Fire Station) on European Restart a Heart Day. The Chief Fire Officer for Greater Manchester, Peter O’Reilly met with colleagues from the British Heart Foundation charity who have launched an ambitious campaign to teach the whole community CPR to help save lives. The British Heart Foundation are hoping for every secondary school to become involved and have created a really fun, easy to use kit for young people to teach themselves life saving techniques. The Fire and Rescue Service are assisting to create as many young life savers as possible as they are aware of the impact and reputation we have in the community. The British Heart Foundation has already seen a life saved as a direct result of its secondary school campaign in Yorkshire. 'Your hands can save a loved one's life' is the slogan for this year's European Restart a Heart Day. The initiative, spearheaded by the European Resuscitation Council (ERC), aims to raise cardiac arrest awareness. In support of today's Restart a Heart Day, all schools and colleges that participate in I.M.P.S & ORCS are being provided with information and resources to teach hands‐only CPR to as many people as possible in the run‐up to half‐term. In an emergency CPR before an ambulance arrives doubles chances of survival, therefore it is vital that bystanders know what to do in an emergency and we are proud to be part of this initiative to save lives. Many thanks to GMF & RS for delivering the programme in particularly Moss Side Fire Station “Green Watch” and Julie Roberts. THANK YOU TO ENGLAND RUGBY World Cup Rugby Match: England V Uruguay A handful of students from Manchester Academy had the opportunity to attend a Rugby World Cup Match and be part of a special evening show casing some of the best Rugby talent in the world. This was a sell‐ out event, even though England had already been knocked out of the competition due to the fact that England had not played in the North since 1923. Students were selected to attend the match due to their commitment to rugby training after school and their keen interest shown in Rugby as they had joined our local rugby union team Broughton Park. Not only did the students need to show a commitment to training, but they also had to showcase the Principals of England Rugby which are Team Work, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship. Upon arrival at the Eastland's stadium students were able to take delight in the atmosphere and they were really excited to see a great game of rugby. The game did not let us down with England triumphing 60 to 3 which was England's biggest win of the competition. The students all commented that they would not forget the evening and they took away some great memories along with some important morals in sportsmanship: ‐ always play hard and show determination to win but also to show respect towards your opponents and treat them as one of your own team mates after the game ends. A good night was had by all and we would like to thank England Rugby for all the support they are giving Manchester Academy at present through the Rugby all schools initiative. • War Metaphors in Newspaper Coverage of the 2010 World Cup
The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School College of Communications WORLD CUP OR WORLD WAR? WAR METAPHORS IN NEWSPAPER COVERAGE OF THE 2010 WORLD CUP A Thesis in Media Studies by Daniel DeIuliis © 2011 Daniel DeIuliis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts May 2011 ii The thesis of Daniel DeIuliis was reviewed and approved* by the following: Marie Hardin Associate Professor of Communications Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research Head of the Graduate Program Thesis Advisor Ford Risley Professor of Communications Matt McAllister Professor of Communications *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. iii ABSTRACT By depicting violence and aggression as not only acceptable, but also exciting, rewarding and expected, both visual and print media have consistently employed militaristic metaphors in their coverage of and commentary on sports, particularly international soccer. Although the 2010 World Cup received more online coverage and viewership than any major sporting event in history, the event - and the militaristic overtones of its media coverage - has received little academic attention, even at a time when many of the tournament‟s participants are engaged in violent conflicts both domestically and abroad. To determine the extent of the explicit use of military terminology in the newspaper coverage of the 2010 World Cup, in what context they were used, and how these contexts reinforce traditional notions of hegemonic masculinity and nationalism, this research employed a preliminary content analysis of print newspaper coverage of the 2010 World Cup from The New York Times, The Sunday Times of South Africa and The London Times of Great Britain.

The industries under scrutiny were sport, public sector and tourism, and the sampled host destinations were Cardiff, Exeter, Brighton and Gloucester. The objectives of this thesis were threefold: (1) to respond to the lack of knowledge around the collaborative roles of sport, public sector and tourism organisations in sport event planning, (2) to pioneer representational capital, a concept that looks to examine the input of those pinpointed planners in the identification and valuation of intangible opportunities generated by hosting RWC 2015 fixtures, (3) to probe planning discourse for examples of leveraging representational capital. Expert opinions were captured from executive-level RWC 2015 planners, and supported by secondary data analysis.
