The industries under scrutiny were sport, public sector and tourism, and the sampled host destinations were Cardiff, Exeter, Brighton and Gloucester. The objectives of this thesis were threefold: (1) to respond to the lack of knowledge around the collaborative roles of sport, public sector and tourism organisations in sport event planning, (2) to pioneer representational capital, a concept that looks to examine the input of those pinpointed planners in the identification and valuation of intangible opportunities generated by hosting RWC 2015 fixtures, (3) to probe planning discourse for examples of leveraging representational capital. Expert opinions were captured from executive-level RWC 2015 planners, and supported by secondary data analysis. The findings showed that public sector and sport organisation planning representatives were key RWC 2015 planners and that tourism planners, at a destination level, were not key collaborators in central planning forums, but collaborated extensively with national and international tourism organisations on RWC 2015 planning matters. Additionally, the analysis uncovered that representational capital was predominantly made-up of three key intangible asset areas: destination image, exposure and reputation. Indeed, these intangible areas were recognised and valued by all three industries, but the data analysis indicated that the levels of collaboration between the sampled planning industries did not translate into collectively leveraging representational capital. Moreover, one of the main breakthroughs from this investigation was identifying the interconnected nature of a range of intangible assets in generating greater value, i.e. increasing representational capital available to planners. Representational capital was found iii to have a strong connection throughout the leveraging process, in terms of the maximisation strategy and planned outputs in RWC 2015 planning, further supporting the study project objective of investigating the intangible in relation to sport events. iv AUTHOR’S DECLARATION I declare that this thesis is my own unaided work. The definitive version is available at: http://www.africanstudies.uct.ac.za/downloads/29_1farquharson.zip Transforming the Springboks: Re-imagining the South African Nation through Sport 1 Karen Farquharson and Timothy Marjoribanks Abstract Nation-building occurs not only through the creation of formal institutions, but also through struggles in cultural and symbolic contexts. In apartheid South Africa, the rugby union Springboks both symbolised and institutionalised a racially based form of ‘bounded citizenship’. In post-apartheid South Africa, the Springboks have emerged as a contested and significant site in the attempt to build a non-racial nation through reconciliation. To explore these contests, we undertook a qualitative thematic analysis of newspaper discourses around the Springboks, reconciliation and nation-building in the contexts of the 1995 and 1999 Rugby World Cups. Our research suggests, first, that the Springboks have been re-imagined in newspaper discourses as a symbol of the non-racial nation-building process in South Africa, especially in ‘media events’ such as the World Cup. Second, we find that there are significant limitations in translating this symbolism into institutionalised practice, as exemplified by newspaper debates over the place of ‘merit’ in international team selection processes. We conclude that the media framing of the role of the Springboks in nation-building indicates that unless the re-imagination of the Springboks is accompanied by a transformation in who is selected to represent the team, and symbolically the nation, the Springboks’ contribution to South African nation-building will be over.

The financial commitment of competition has become prohibitive for some athletes, but thanks to the generous donors at the USET Foundation, riders like Callan Solem, Laura Graves and Matthew Brown have been able to reach their goals through grants and funding, bring- ing home top honors for the United States. SHOW JUMPING Callan Solem In equestrian sport, all junior riders dream of making it to the top of the sport and competing at the Grand Prix level, but the say- ing “it takes a village,” truly applies for the nation’s top show jump- ers. Callan Solem began her riding career as a working student for Carol Thompson, who recognized Solem’s talent and passion for the sport right away. With a dedication to her job and a love for the horses, Solem became the professional rider for Thompson in 1997, and in 2010 began riding for Virginia and Collin McNeil. Over the years, Solem has earned multiple top placings at some of the country’s biggest events, and has represented the United States at Nations Cup competitions in Europe and Mexico. But to be a part of the U.S. Show Jumping Team, it has taken more than just talent and dedication; it has taken the support of organi- zations like the USET Foundation.

Of course the Kiwis take on Samoa on Saturday night at Mt Smart, and that one should be a good game too. League legend Olsen Filipaina is taking the ball out, which is pretty cool given he has represented the Kiwis and Samoa. The game I am looking forward to is the Kiwis v Tonga in Hamilton, because there is not going to be a lot of love lost when those two sides meet, after everything that has gone on. Before a ball is kicked I have the Kiwis lunch at the Ellerslie Events Centre to look forward to on Friday. When Pete asked if I would take it on with Gordon Gibbons and Tony Feasey, I foolishly said yes, not want- ing to let Pete down. But in truth Gordon has been amazing and we have an incredible line-up of Kiwis greats taking to the stage, and players with a long history of World Cup and test glory in attendance. I have been to several of Peter’s Kiwis lunches and enjoyed every one of them.

    THE REALISED ECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE 2011 RUGBY WORLD CUP – A HOST CITY ANALYSIS Sam Richardson1 School of Economics and Finance College of Business Massey University Palmerston North New Zealand Brown Bag Seminar, December 2012 (Work in Progress) Abstract The 2011 Rugby World Cup, hosted by New Zealand, was projected to make an operational loss of NZ$39.3 million, of which taxpayers were to foot two‐thirds of the bill. This was in contrast to profits of A$48 million for the 2003 tournament in Australia and €30 million for the 2007 tournament in France. Part of the justification for incurring these losses was an expectation of significant economic benefits arising from the hosting of the tournament. This paper estimates the realised economic impact on host cities during the 2011 tournament.
