14 2009 Lady Rams Volleyball 2008 Review 2008 Review Season Review
LADY RAMS POST 9-2 RRAC R ECORD
After a grueling non-conference schedule, the 2008 Lady Rams got hot at
the right time. The team won four of its last five contests and six of its
last ten to reach the RRAC Semifinals where they were ousted by the
eventual champion, Wiley College.
Six All-Conference selections helped the Rams to a 9-2 record in confer-
ence play. Katlynn Romig and Brittney Person were both 1st-team selec-
tions. Romig was also named RRAC Defensive Specialist of the Year.
Destiny Clemmons, Evoni Darling, Emily Millican, and Kristen Venhuizen
were all named to the 2nd-team.
The team proved it was a contender for the RRAC Championship when it
handed Southwestern Assemblies of God University its first conference
loss in an impressive five-setter on November 4. The Lady Rams topped
the Lady Lions in the Sid Richardson Center with scores of 16-25, 26-24,
25-22, 22-25, and 15-13.
That win sparked a four-match winning streak. Texas Wesleyan topped
Bacone in its final RRAC contest to finish at 9-2 in conference play and
seal the third seed in the conference tournament. They then closed out
the regular season with a 3-0 win over Our Lady of the Lake University.
The Rams started strong in the conference tournament, topping Bacone in
four. In the semifinals they met with second seeded Wiley for what
turned out to be an epic battle. Wiley had taken the only regular season
meeting between the two teams, 3-1. However, the Lady Rams jumped on
the Wildcats early with 25-21 and 25-20 wins in the first two games. The
Wildcats then took game three 25-21 and fought off two match points
before leveling the match with a 29-27 win in game four. The decisive
game five ended in a 15-11 score favoring Wiley, who went on to knock
off Southwestern Assemblies of God for the RRAC Championship.
Althought the Lady Rams finished with a 14-26 overall record, the future
is bright for the program. The 2008 Lady Rams, a team that featured no
seniors and only three juniors, gained valuable experience against very
strong competition before finishing the season with a 12-8 mark in their
last 20 matches.
