There are opportunities for you to revise material you have previously studied, practice skills that you have learned in class and sometimes learn something new. As a minimum you will a pen and some paper to complete these tasks. If you need these, please collect from the reception desk at the academy. For some of the mind- mapping tasks you might wish to use coloured pens or pencils but they are not essential. Some tasks may ask you to create packs of flashcards. You can use any kind of paper or card for this but don’t worry if you don’t have enough, just choose another task. While you are not in school you should follow your normal school timetable and complete an hour of work for each hour you would normally be studying that subject in school. You may find that, without the support of your teacher you complete tasks more slowly than you would do in a lesson and that is absolutely fine. If you get really stuck on something, move on to the next task and/or seek help from the internet, a parent/guardian or by e-mailing or phoning your teacher if possible.

  • What's It Like to Be Black and Irish?
“What’s it like to be black and Irish?” “Like a pint of Guinness.” The above quote is taken from an interview with Phil Lynott, the charismatic lead singer of the Celtic rock band Thin Lizzy, on Gay Byrne’s ‘The Late Late Show’. Lynott’s often playful and bold responses to such questions about his identity served to mask his overwhelming feelings of insecurity and ambivalent sense of belonging. As an illegitimate black child brought up in the 1950s in a strict Catholic family in Crumlin, a working-class district of Dublin, Lynott was seen to have a “paradoxical personality” (Bridgeman, qtd. in Thomson 4): his upbringing imbued him “with an acute sense of national and gender identity” (Smyth 39), yet his skin color and illegitimacy made him the target of racial and social abuse in a predominantly white and conservative Ireland. For Lynott, becoming a rockstar offered an opportunity to reinvent himself and be whoever he wanted to be. While he played up to the rock and roll lifestyle in which he was embedded, Lynott is often considered to have been a man trapped inside a caricature (Thomson 301). Geldof (qtd. in Putterford 182) believes that this rocker persona was Lynott’s ultimate downfall and led to his untimely death at just 36 years of age in 1986. For all his swagger and bravado, behind the mask, Lynott was a troubled, young man searching for a place to belong. While many books have been written about the life of Phil Lynott (e.g. Putterford; Lynott; Thomson), few have drawn attention to the notion of identity and the way in which music provided Lynott with an outlet to explore his self.

  • Rhythms of Relation: Black Popular Music and Mobile Technologies
Rhythms of Relation: Black Popular Music and Mobile Technologies Alexander G. Weheliye In this essay I focus on the singular performances of the interface between (black) subjectivity and informational technologies in popular music, ask- ing how these performances impact current definitions of the technologi- cal. After a brief examination of those aspects of mobile technologies that gesture beyond disembodied communication, I turn to the multifarious manifestations of techno-informational gadgets (especially cellular/mobile telephones) in contemporary R&B, a genre that is acutely concerned, both in content and form, with the conjuring of interiority, emotion, and affect. The genre’s emphasis on these aspects provides an occasion to analyze how technology thoroughly permeates spheres that are thought to represent the hallmarks of humanist hallucinations of humanity. I outline the extensive and intensive interdependence of contemporary (black) popular music and mobile technologies in order to ascertain how these sonic formations refract communication and embodiment and ask how this impacts rul- ing definitions of the technological. The first group of musical examples surveyed consists of recordings released between 1999 and 2001; the sec- ond set are recordings from years 2009–2010. Since ten years is almost an eternity in the constantly changing universes of popular music and mobile technologies, analyzing the sonic archives from two different historical moments allows me to stress the general co-dependence of mobiles and music without silencing the breaks that separate these “epochs.” Finally, I gloss a visual example that stages overlooked dimensions of mobile tech- nologies so as to amplify the rhythmic flow between the scopic and the sonic.

  • Midge Ure (Ultravox)
MUSIC He took us to Vienna, fed the world and now Ultravox frontman Midge Ure is back, writes Sally Browne SPARK t had never really been done before. ‘‘Synthpop’’ and ‘‘ballad’’ were two BURNS words that just didn’t go together. I But in 1981 UK band Ultravox released a single that would become a worldwide hit. It was called Vienna and it combined the grandeur of grand piano and strings with haunting, spare synthesiser beats. The song captured a generation, stayed for a month at No. 2 on the UK charts and was awarded Single of the Year at the Brit Awards for 1981. The video, filmed in its namesake Vienna, also set the trend for music videos to come. It was shot by noted Australian director Russell Mulcahy, who also made classic videos for acts including Duran Duran, Elton John, Culture Club, Bonnie Tyler and Queen. Dramatic and cinematic, the film clip for Vienna was reminiscent of noir film The Third Man, set in spy-filled post-war Austria and starring Orson Welles. The young Scotsman who had penned the lyrics to the unusual song had never been to Vienna until that time. ‘‘It wasn’t until we actually went to the city, I realised that what I’d imagined in my head was kind of real, this decaying Still playing: Ultravox elegance, this beautiful city,’’ Midge Ure frontman Midge Ure has a new says today. album after all these years. The band had taken a big risk to shoot the video there. They took out a loan of 7000 pounds to fund it.

Through an exploration of voice, lyricism, kinesthetic performance, instrumentality and visual aesthetics, this course examines the “world wide underground” of black women’s sonic cultures, and it re-interrogates pop music subculture theories through the intersecting prisms of race, gender, class and sexuality. It considers the ways that black women musicians operate as socio- political and cultural intellectuals, and it reads their work as historically-situated cultural texts that resonate in multiple contexts. Throughout the semester, we will explore the ways in which black women culture workers have stylized and innovated disruptive and iconic performance practices within the context of American popular music culture, from the postbellum era through the present day. Part of the aim of this course is to trace the tensions between the enormous influence and ubiquity of the black female singing voice in globalized popular cultures and the ways in which a range of entertainers have nonetheless negotiated eccentric and “obscure” musical gestures that signaled and affirmed the existence of resistant musical aesthetics in the face of panopticism.
