From day one I was not frightened to tell him what he should do and shouldn’t do.’ Photo: Louie Douvis ANNE HYLAND Ken Cowley, once one of the most powerful men in Australia, is reflecting on life, death and his career. Seated in his office in Milsons Point on Sydney’s lower north shore, decked out in R.M. Williams attire down to its world famous boots, Cowley is a man content with his own achievements and aware increasingly of his own mortality. On at least half a dozen occasions, he reflects on when he will go to God. He has relinquished almost all of his work duties, except as chairman of the aforementioned bush outfitter, which has been a labour of love for the past two decades. His wife of 55 years, Maureen, has urged him to sell the business, that he owns, and last year he offloaded a 50 per cent stake in R.M. Williams to the private equity arm of global luxury goods group LVMH. “I’m very comfortable knowing there’s a good safe home for it if I climb the stairway to heaven,” Cowley says. Soon he will relinquish the remainder and spend more time with his wife. “That’s her up there,” he says, pointing to a glamorous framed photo of Maureen.

    CHAPTER 15 u Bob Hawke, Philo-Semite My first visit to Israel transformed my interest in that country into fascination. The dry, dusty landscape dotted with ancient olive trees evoked all the memories of those biblical stories which had enthralled me as a child. Isi first came across Bob Hawke, leader of the Australian Trade Union Council, during the lead-up to the 1974 countrywide elections. The relationship, nurtured by both men, proved precious to the Jewish community when Hawke first became president of the Australian Labor Party (1973–1991), then opposition leader (February 1983–March 1983), and finally during Hawke’s long tenure as prime minister (1983 until 1991).1 The truth is that Robert (Bob) J. Hawke had bonded with Jewish Australians and the State of Israel even before he and Isi became close. As a labor leader, he collaborated with Jewish business leaders in search of revenues that would allow his council to expand and improve the consumer power of union members. The relationship with Isi strengthened and deepened these ties. Hawke’s openhanded support for the Jewish community, Israel, and Soviet Jewry, beginning in the 1970s, invites the question: Why, when so much of Labor abandoned Israel, did Hawke remain steadfast – even when it did him no good politically? It is likely that part of the answer relates to his character. Sympathetic Listening Few know Hawke as well as Blanche d’Alpuget, who not only wrote his biography but became his lover and, in 1995, his wife. As she tells it, the charismatic Hawke was brought up to believe that it was his destiny to lead.

The theory of successful criminal entrepreneurs i ABSTRACT As typological category, criminal entrepreneurs have a different modus operandi from most traditional criminals. This study develops a theory of successful criminal entrepreneurs, operating in non-hierarchically structured organised crime. Successful criminal entrepreneurs cannot be described through classic criminological theories such as low self-control theory. The theory of successful criminal entrepreneurs provides an understanding of the leadership of criminal entrepreneurs which includes vision, leadership style and orientation, in addition to their identity. The theory also provides an understanding of the operational approaches used by successful criminal entrepreneurs in addition to the use of their social networks. The theory of successful criminal entrepreneurs argues that successful criminal entrepreneurs start their careers with a clearly defined vision.     Portraits IN SCIENCE Compiled and introduced by ANN MOYAL SCIENCE IS ONE of the most important intellectual and cultural forces of the twentieth century, yet surprisingly little is known in Australia of the lives of this country's key scientific men and women and of the contributions they have made to enlarging the boundaries of scientific knowledge. Among these interviews compiled and introduced by Ann Moyal there are two physicists, Sir Mark Oliphant and Professor Harry Messel, and three medical researchers in immunology, human genetics and the brain—Sir Gustav Nossal, Professor Susan Serjeantson and Professor Peter Bishop. On Friday 1 August, 1986 Mr Myers and I interviewed two Directors of a company known as Commuter Terminals Pty. Limited which was commissioned to submit a proposal to the Public Transport Authority on the redevelopment of Central Railway. The two Directors which were interviewed were Mr John Andrews, Architect and Mr Stan Edwards , Builder. Mr Andrews said that he was first approached by a Mr Warwick Colbron, Solicitor to have some drawings made for the redevelopment project. Mr Andrews had not known Colbron prior to this . Stan Edwards was asked by Andrews to determine cost and products estimates and had not known Colbron prior to this venture either . Neither men knew in what capacity Colbron was acting and both commented that he (Colbron) was a name dropper. They further stated that they knew no approaches to public figures (excl uding John Johnston MLA) to have the project accepted or promoted . No mention was made to either per son I, of any approach being mad e.,.. ... to Morgan Ryan or others and no known connection between Warwick Colbron and Abe Saffron. The company was founded by Reg Ansett in 1935 as Ansett Airways Pty Ltd. This was an offshoot of his road transport business which had become so successful it was threatening the freight and passenger revenue of Victorian Railways. This led the state government to legislate to put private road transport operators out of business. Reg Ansett countered by establishing an airline as aviation was under control of the federal government and beyond the reach of the state government.[2] Ansett's first route between Hamilton, Victoria and Melbourne operated by a Fokker Universal monoplane commenced on 17 February 1936. The rapid success of the airline led Ansett to float the business in 1937.

    SOUTH AUSTRALIAN AVIATION MUSEUM SIGNIFICANT AIRCRAFT PROFILES DOUGLAS DC-6 & DC-6B IN AUSTRALIAN SERVICE (PART 2) Introduction The Douglas DC-6 was introduced to Australian domestic routes in December 1953 in the livery of ANA (Australian National Airways). This brief history outlines the aircraft’s selection, service life and involvement of Sir Ivan Holyman, co-founder and chief executive of ANA. Part 1 of this series tells the story of the DC-6’s introduction to Australian international services with British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines in 1948. Pre-WWII Background In 1854, William Holyman arrived in northern Tasmania where he settled following a voyage from England. There he established a small coastal shipping company that over the following decades expanded considerably. Agreements with shipping companies Union Steamship Company of New Zealand and Huddart Parker & Co of Melbourne in 1902-1904 saw Holyman vessels operating to Adelaide and Melbourne. As the 20th Century dawned, so had a third generation of the Holyman family, most of whom were employed in the family shipping business. The advent of WWI would eventually lead two members of this generation into the realm of aviation. Victor Holyman trained and qualified as a Royal Naval Air Service pilot, serving in France and as a test pilot in England, before returning to Australia and rejoining Holyman as a sea captain. His younger brother Ivan (born in 1896) served throughout the war from Gallipoli to France. Entering as a private, rising to captain, he was wounded four times and awarded the Military Cross. On his return to Tasmania and Holyman, he shared his brother’s interest in aviation though never learnt to fly.
