    New Book Announcement: Amudim be-Toldot ha-Sefer ha-Ivri (Volume Three) New Book Announcement: Amudim be-Toldot ha-Sefer ha-Ivri (Volume Three) By Eliezer Brodt I am very happy to announce the recent publication of an important work, which will be of great interest to readers of the Seforim blog. The third volume of, Amudim be-Toldot ha-Sefer ha-Ivri by Professor Yaakov Shmuel Spiegel, of Bar-Ilan University’s Talmud department. As I have written in the past, Professor Spiegel is one of the most prolific writers in the Jewish academic scene, authoring of over 160 articles and 18 books (16 of those are publications for the first time of works which remained in manuscript). Many suspect he possesses Hashbot Hakulmos (automatic writing). His articles cover an incredibly wide range of subjects related to many areas of Jewish Studies, including history of Rishonim,piyutim authored by Rishonim, bibliography and minhaghim, to name but a few. His uniqueness lies not only in the topics but also that his work has appeared in all types of publications running the gamut from academic journals such as Kiryat Sefer, Tarbiz, Sidra, Alei Sefer, Assufot, Teudah, Kovetz Al Yad and also in many prominent Charedi rabbinic journals such a Yeshurun, Yerushasenu, Moriah, Sinai and Or Yisroel. It is hard to define his area of expertise, as in every area he writes about he appears to be an expert! He has edited and printed from manuscript many works of Rishonim and Achronim on Massekhes Avos and the Haggadah Shel Pesach. He is of the opinion, contrary to that of some other academics, that there is nothing non- academic about printing critical editions of important manuscript texts.

    A Letter from R. Nathan Kamenetsky A Letter from R. Nathan Kamenetsky In response to my last post on the Seforim Blog, R. Nathan Kamenetsky sent me a long e-mail. Because of its value to those with an interest in the Lithuanian Torah world, I asked Rabbi Kamenetsky for permission to post it here, and he graciously agreed – Marc Shapiro The central figure, albeit a mostly passive one, in the story I shall tell below is R’ Maisheh Finkel, one of the twin sons who were the youngest children of the Alter of Slabodka, born around 1887. The other twin was R’ Shmuel Finkel, whose son became a caterer in Chicago and is the father of the recently deceased son-in-law of R’ Bainish Finkel (son of the the Alter’s oldest son R’ Laizer-Yudel), R’ Noson-Zvi Finkel, a namesake of his great-grandfather the Alter of Slabodka who served as the Rosh of the mighty Yeshivat Mir of Jerusalem for about thirty years. R’ Maisheh was far superior in Torah talent to his twin R’ Shmuel. Someone described to me R’ Maisheh’s learning pose; he would pace back and forth the length of the beit midrash, and if someone asked a good question, R’ Maisheh would give him one reply as he passed the questioner on the first time he transversed the beit midrash, then give him a second answer when he passed by him a second time, and a third answer when he passed him by for the third time.     Rav Aharon Yeshaya Shapiro zt"l (1907-1981) Rav Aharon Yeshya Shapiro was born in Pinsk on Chanukah, 5677 (1907), to his parents Reb Yaakov Yitzchok1 and Chaya. The family were Chasidim of Karlin-Stolin, and his childhood was steeped in this tradition. Every Shabbos, young Aharon Yeshaya and his father would walk with a neighbor, Reb Nachman Shteierman2 and his son Yisroel, from their courtyard in Pinsk to the Karliner Rebbe’s tish in the Shul in Karlin. [This neighbor, Yisroel Shteierman, became a mechutan later in America.] Rav Aharon Yeshaya merited to see the Stoliner Rebbe Reb Yisroel zt”l, known as the Yanuka, and remembered him well. After WW II, Rav Aharon Yeshaya was instrumental in assisting the Stoliner Rebbe, Rav Yochonon zt”l in replacing of the Matzeiva on the Kever of Rav Yisroel in Frankfurt. Rav Aharon Yeshaya was educated in the local yeshivos, and around the age of fifteen, wth the encouragement of the Rav of Pinsk, Rav Aharon Walkin (author of the Bais Aharon on Shas), he entered the yeshiva of Mir. 3 During Bein HaZemanim, when he returned home, he would speak in learning with the Karliner Rebbe, Reb Avrohom Elimelech zt”l, Hy”d. Although he was young compared to other bachurim in the yeshiva, he soon gained a reputation as a budding Talmid Chachom, and was paired up with the likes of Rav Chaim Shmuelewitz as a chavrusa, with whom he learned Masechta Chulin. He was close to the Rav of Mir, Rav Hirsh Kamai Hy"d and Rav Leizer Yudel Finkel, and received Semicha from them.

    Rav Gifter zt”l 1 Introduction When Rav Tzvi Markowitz zt”l, the chief rabbi of Ramat Gan was asked why he doesn’t tell stories of his great Rebbe, Rav Shimon Shkop, he would say, “generally people who tell stories about their rebbe are usually telling stories about themselves, I don’t like talking about myself.” Writing about our Rebbe Rav Mordechai Gifter zt”l, after 20 years, is an expression of how the void created by his passing is still evident. Hardly a day goes by without the feeling that his wisdom and guidance are sorely lacking. The years spent in his presence created the perimeters in which future growth were possible, always building on those foundations and returning to those lessons. It is my hope that this short compilation will arouse an interest in the hadracha of the Rosh Yeshiva that is available in his seforim and hundreds of tapes. Throughout his legacy he touches on a myriad of topics and issues that are as vital now as they were when the Rosh Yeshiva first addressed them. In a Hesped that the Rosh Yeshiva delivered on the yarzheit of the Alter Telzer Rov he stated1, “Although I did not know the Rosh Yeshiva personally, my knowledge of him is from his Torah. But this is the true way to recognize a person. Just as our recognition of Hashem is only through His Torah.” The same can be said of the Rosh Yeshiva, even though he lived amongst us, he was not of our dimension. There are no superfluous words in the Torah, and yet there seems to be a redundancy in the passuk that describes how Yaakov blessed Ephraim and Menashe. He said, “May the Lord render you like Ephraim and Menashe.” And then, the Torah tells us, that “he placed Ephraim before Menashe.” There is a deeper meaning here, explains Rav Levi Yitzchak. The Gema ra tells us (Megillah 15a), “ Come and see how the Holy Blessed One’s attributes differ from those of mortals. Mortals place the pot on the fire and then fill it with water, but the Holy Blessed One fills it with water and then puts the pot on the fire.” Wh at does this mean? It refers to the preparation of the remedy before the affliction appears. The physical suffering is symbolized by the pot, and the divine kindness that restores health and serenity is symbolized by water. A person pours water into the po t after it has been placed in the oven, in other words, he is faced with an ailment and seeks water to pour over it. But the Almighty begins with the water. He wants to do certain acts of kindness for a person, but the person may be unworthy; his pot may b e too small, so to speak.
