    1 FREEDOM OF RELIGION Regulatory and Policy Framework for Religion During the Commission’s 2015 reporting year, the Chinese gov- ernment and Communist Party continued to restrict freedom of re- ligion in China. China’s Constitution guarantees ‘‘freedom of reli- gious belief’’ 1 but limits protection of religious activities to ‘‘normal religious activities.’’ 2 This narrow protection contravenes inter- national human rights standards. Article 18 of the Universal Dec- laration of Human Rights (UDHR) and Article 18 of the Inter- national Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)—the lat- ter of which China has signed 3 and stated its intent to ratify 4— recognize not only an individual’s right to adopt a religion or belief, but also the freedom to manifest one’s religion in ‘‘worship, observ- ance, practice and teaching.’’ 5 The Chinese government continued to recognize only five reli- gions: Buddhism, Catholicism, Islam, Protestantism, and Taoism. The 2005 Regulations on Religious Affairs (RRA) require groups wishing to practice these religions to register with the government and subject such groups to government controls.6 The government and Party control religious affairs mainly through the State Ad- ministration for Religious Affairs (SARA) and lower level religious affairs bureaus under the State Council,7 the Party Central Com- mittee United Front Work Department (UFWD),8 and the five ‘‘pa- triotic’’ religious associations—the Buddhist Association of China (BAC), the Catholic Patriotic Association of China (CPA), the Is- lamic

ABSTRACT Conversion by the Book: Buddhist Print Culture in Early Republican China 經典佛化: 民國初期佛教出版文化 Gregory Adam Scott 史瑞戈 In this dissertation I argue that print culture acted as a catalyst for change among Buddhists in modern China. Through examining major publication institutions, publishing projects, and their managers and contributors from the late nineteenth century to the 1920s, I show that the expansion of the scope and variety of printed works, as well as new the social structures surrounding publishing, substantially impacted the activity of Chinese Buddhists. In doing so I hope to contribute to ongoing discussions of the ‘revival’ of Chinese Buddhism in the modern period, and demonstrate that publishing, propelled by new print technologies and new forms of social organization, was a key field of interaction and communication for religious actors during this era, one that helped make possible the introduction and adoption of new forms of religious thought and practice. 本論文的論點是出版文化在近代中國佛教人物之中,扮演了變化觸媒的角色. 通過研究從十 九世紀末到二十世紀二十年代的主要的出版機構, 種類, 及其主辦人物與提供貢獻者, 論文 說明佛教印刷的多元化 以及範圍的大量擴展, 再加上跟出版有關的社會結構, 對中國佛教 人物的活動都發生了顯著的影響. 此研究顯示在被新印刷技術與新形式的社會結構的推進 下的出版事業, 為該時代的宗教人物展開一種新的相互連結與構通的場域, 因而使新的宗教 思想與實踐的引入成為可能. 此論文試圖對現行關於近代中國佛教的所謂'復興'的討論提出 貢獻. Geddes Submitted by: Rachael Knoblauch Definition Carbon nanodots are fluorescent, quasi-spherical nanoparticles that have been investigated and modified for numerous applications. In recent years, the utility of these structures for antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (APDT) has been of increasing interest. For this technology, light is used to trigger the generation of reactive oxygen species which subsequently inactivate or kill pathogenic microorganisms. Carbon nanodots are of interest for this application due to their simple, "green" synthesis methods and their tunable organic structures and luminescent properties. Herein we share some recent developments in the field of antimicrobial carbon nanodots, highlighting their increasing relevance and potential in this area. 1. Introduction Although the threat of antibiotic resistance development in pathogenic bacteria is not a new challenge, it remains to date a pressing concern in regard to global health. Antibiotics have been a primary tool for combating infectious diseases, yet the timescale of development for next-generation antibiotics remains lengthy due to the complexities and cost of not only drug discovery, but also clinical testing and ultimately approval. Additionally, bacteria have a multitude of mechanisms by which they can rapidly acquire resistance,[1][2] which is of particular concern for high-risk populations such as those in healthcare settings.[3][4] For those with concurrent conditions, such as cancer, bacterial infections can severely worsen patient health;[5][6] infections may also delay wound recovery even when treated, with some negative health impacts associated with current disinfection techniques.[7] These cumulative effects place a premium on developing techniques to mitigate the threat of infection from deadly pathogens, namely by improved sterilization technologies.

Heller, Chair This dissertation examines the textual production and doctrinal import of the gong’an commentarial verses of Hongzhi Zhengjue in the context of Chan literary traditions as well as his usage of secular literature. During the Song period (960–1279) revival of the Caodong lineage, Hongzhi was an influential figure, who promoted Silent Illumination Chan (mozhao chan). Hongzhi was talented in writing in a variety of genres, including verses, portrait poetry, and commentaries on gong’an (public cases). My study examines Hongzhi’s gong’an texts and uses them as a window to understand Chan literary traditions of the Song period. In addition to situating Hongzhi’s gong’an writings within Chan contexts, my dissertation places his gong’an commentarial verses within contemporary secular literary culture. My study considers how Hongzhi participated in mainstream literary culture by engaging in gong’an commentarial verses and poetry for literati. ii My dissertation is divided into four chapters. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 A Theoretical Study of Zhang Ailing’s Short Story Collection Chuanqi Abstract This thesis applies three literary theories as approaches to the study ofChuanqi , the short story collection of the modem Chinese writer Zhang Ailing. A feminist reading of Chuanqi demonstrates that the social roles of women are actually the projections of men’s desires. Women, deprived of the right to define themselves, can only struggle to live up to men’s expectations which, however, twist their mentality. A Lacanian study of Chuanqi points out how characters keep transforming their desires into fantasies which, once condensed into signifiers, will he imposed upon other people, the embodiments of the signifieds. However, the characters’ desires are never satisfied since people always fail to act in accordance with the signifiers tagged to them.
