6Th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic Monday, May 11, 2009 El Caballero Country Club 6th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic Monday, May 11, 2009 El Caballero Country Club supporting “The cancer we can see, but no one talks about.” Presented by The Actors’ Network Aaron, Darla & Mike... You simply have made the event possible since its inception! Thank you. Kerry Scot Daveline March 4, 1961 South Bend, ID January 4, 2003 Sherman Oaks, CA Kerry Daveline (far left), at his final USC / Notre Dame game with tournament Co-Hosts Kevin E. West and Michael Moynahan. “Every man dies. Not every man truly lives.” — Braveheart The Hack n’ Smack event is the fulfillment of a promise made to Kerry Daveline by his friend, Kevin E. West, just prior to Kerry’s death on January 4th, 2003. Kevin and Kerry wanted to combine their passion for golf to raise money and awareness in the fight against melanoma. Kerry fought like a champ for nearly five years, still singing, doing voice over work and traveling. While Kerry was not able to share in the joy of their birth, his widow, Mia Daveline gave birth to their miracle post-mortem twin daughters on January 3rd, 2005. They all attend the event annually. Dr. Francesco Federico! We are proud to We are deeply indebted to support you for your support! The Melanoma Research Foundation in memory of our friend Silver Lake’s “Walking Man” is Kerry far more than that! Thanks so much for Daveline caring about Kerry and being the man Hansen, Jacobson, you are... Teller, Hoberman, shirt or no shirt. Newman, Warren & Dr. Marc Abrams is a giant amongst Richman, LLP giants. Generous and sincere. We are forever in your debt. Why we are here! Every hour of every day, someone dies of melanoma in the US. Melanoma strikes people of all ages, race, and economic level. One in 75 Americans will develop melanoma during their lifetime. Melanoma is the most highly preventable, and treatable if caught early. Please help start the awareness this particular cancer needs now more than ever. Of all of the various skin cancers, melanoma is known to be the most deadly if not caught in its earliest phases. Approximately 60,000 will be diagnosed with melanoma and 8,00 will die this year from melanoma. Melanoma is the fastest rising cancer it continues to receive less than 10% of the funding given to basic research of other cancers. In fact, funding for melanoma research is typically distributed to studies focused on treatments for other cancers in the hope that there might be benefit for the melanoma patient. This has been happening since the late 70’s and 80’s. We know that therapies effective for other cancers typically are not effective for the melanoma patient. Yet critical funds are expended in basic research that is over 20 years old and known to have little benefit to the melanoma community. To find new and more effective treatments, funding MUST be increased now. On behalf of the staff and Board of Directors, thank you for being a part of this event to benefit the Melanoma Research Foundation. • The Complexities of Latina Sexuality on Ugly Betty Tanya González
IS UGLY THE NEW SEXY? The Complexities of Latina Sexuality on Ugly Betty Tanya González ABC’s Emmy and Golden Globe winning television show Ugly Betty stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, an intelligent Mexican American executive assistant who lives in Queens, New York, but works at Mode in Manhattan. An adaptation from the Colombian telenovela,Yo soy, Betty la fea, this television show works on a fairy tale premise: the ugly protagonist with a heart of gold will eventually obtain happiness by virtue of her goodness. However, Ugly Betty offers a protagonist with multiple love interests, constantly involving her in a variety of love triangles, begging the question, “Is ugly the new sexy?” The following analysis of Betty as a sexual subject demonstrates that Ugly Betty, within the limits of Hollywood representation, offers complex subjects instead of one-dimensional types. The show’s use of a Latino camp aesthetic continually introduces elements, like Betty’s sexuality, that push the limits of how we perceive Latinas/os on television and in everyday life. As a result, Ugly Betty surprisingly illustrates Chicana/o and Latina/o feminist theories about identity construction. ABC’s Emmy and Golden Globe winning television show Ugly Betty is a global iteration of the Colombian telenovela1 phenomenon Yo soy, Betty la fea (1999-2001). Ugly Betty, which premiered Fall 2006 and will end Spring 2010, stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, an intelligent, sweet, perky young Latina2 who lives in Queens, but works at Mode, a fictional representation of Vogue magazine. As the title suggests, people perceive Betty as ugly because she is not model-skinny; wears glasses, braces, and bangs; and has poor fashion sense.

THESIS A REASON TO BELIEVE: A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF MORMON MISSIONARY FILMS Submitted by Sky L. Anderson Department of Communication Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Spring 2012 Master’s Committee Advisor: Carl Burgchardt Eric Aoki Kathleen Kiefer ABSTRACT A REASON TO BELIEVE: A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF MORMON MISSIONARY FILMS In this analysis, I examine Mormon cinema and how it functions on a rhetorical level. I specifically focus on missionary films, or movies that are framed by LDS missionary narratives. Through an analysis of two LDS missionary films, namely Richard Dutcher’s God’s Army (2000) and Mitch Davis’ The Other Side of Heaven (2001), I uncover two rhetorical approaches to fostering spirituality. In my first analysis, I argue that God’s Army presents two pathways to spirituality: one which produces positive consequences for the characters, and the other which produces negative consequences. I call these pathways, respectively, ascending and descending spirituality, and I explore the rhetorical implications of this framing. In my second analysis, I contend that The Other Side of Heaven creates a rhetorical space wherein the audience may transform. Specifically, the film constructs a “Zion,” or a heaven on earth, with three necessary components, which coincide perfectly with established LDS teachings: God, people, and place. These three elements invite the audience to accept that they are imperfect, yet they can improve if they so desire. Ultimately, by comparing my findings from both films, I argue that the films’ rhetorical strategies are well constructed to potentially reinforce beliefs for Mormon audiences, and they also may invite non-Mormons to think more positively about LDS teachings.

2018-19 SEASON PREVIEW OF IMTA ALUMS ON THE SMALL SCREEN IMTA Press Release September 6, 2018 Each fall as a new television season begins, it is gratifying to note the IMTA alumni who add to their résumés with work on “television.” In the 21st Century, “television” is not just a “smart” TV, but any portable device or computer with internet access. Networks and cable channels produce their own line-up of original shows and films, as do streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon and Hulu…and soon, Apple TV. YouTube and Vimeo serve as platforms for independent filmmakers and writers to release original series and films. All of these outlets provide unlimited—and ongoing—possibilities for IMTA alumni to appear on “the small screen” by making their full catalog of shows, new and old, available on-line so that they may be viewed year-round, 24-7. Below are just a few of the IMTA alumni working on network, cable or web series, appearing on returning or new series in regular or recurring roles, announced guest-starring appearances, and lead or supporting roles in TV movies and mini-series. Our apologies for any names missing. IMTA is equally proud of all of the alumni working in the entertainment industry and we try to keep track of as many as we can. Please let us know of castings, guest appearances and other successes of IMTA alums. IMTA alum Amy Acker returns for the second season of the FOX series “The Gifted” on September 25. The action-adventure family drama from Marvel tells the story of a suburban couple whose ordinary lives are rocked by the sudden discovery that their children possess mutant powers.

  • IMTA ALUM CHRISTOPHER GORHAM and a BOY CALLED PO IMTA Press Release August 31, 2017 a Boy Called Po Opens in Limited Release Friday, September 1
IMTA ALUM CHRISTOPHER GORHAM AND A BOY CALLED PO IMTA Press Release August 31, 2017 A Boy Called Po opens in limited release Friday, September 1 “They call it the autism spectrum for a reason because it is a wide spectrum of behaviors and abilities…I think this film does a lot to open people’s eyes to the reality of what it’s like to raise a kid like Po.” – Christopher Gorham IMTA alum Christopher Gorham’s 20 year career has included many memorable characters on some of television’s most popular shows, such as “Ugly Betty’s” boyfriend Henry Grubstick and “Covert Affairs’” blind CIA handler Auggie Anderson. He has had starring roles on “Jake 2.0,” “Harper’s Island” and “Medical Investigation,” and many featured appearances on series such as “The Magicians,” “Two Broke Girls” and “Once Upon a Time” among many others. Gorham has also branched out into the other side of the camera, directing several episodes of “Covert Affairs,” the short Gamechangers comedies, and the recently released We Love You, Sally Carmichael! But in the independent feature A Boy Called Po, Gorham takes on a role unlike most of his previous work; a role that it is both deeply personal and relatable to his own life. A Boy Called Po, based on a true story, follows a recently widowed engineer struggling to raise his 12-year old autistic son. Patrick, who prefers to be called ‘Po,’ is a gifted but challenged child who was very close to his mother and unable to communicate his own sense of loss.
