SAN RAFAEL ELKS #1108 ~ SEPTEMBER 2019

SEPTEMBER BOOSTER - 2019

FROM THE STATION OF FIDELITY

From the Exalted Ruler Eric Holm The 2019 Great North West District Jamboree was a great success, thank you to the Eureka Lodge for hosting. I was there on Saturday for the Clam Chowder Cook-off, fun games including Jenga and corn hole. The day ended with a raffle, gift basket auction and a great prime rib dinner with entertainment by Clint Ingbretson and Ila Selene, who put on a truly fabulous show. I’m proud to report, San Rafael’s gift basket raised $605, in auction!!! OUTSTANDING!!! The money raised was all to benefit the Great Northwest District Jamboree which is our own district level charity, created to help offset the cost and over head of many of our other charity events, and offsetting Ritual Contest expenses for the winning team. ELKTOBERFEST, is our annual Elks National Foundation (ENF) fundraiser and is one of my favorite events of the Elk year. It will be held on Saturday, September 28, on our Beer-garden Terrace at the Lodge. There will be food, drink, games, music, and fun, and all for a great cause. ENF provides millions of dollars to lodges and programs each year and qualifies us to apply for numerous grants and scholarships to be awarded by our Lodge. The main thing we need to do to help make us eligible is meet our per capita goal of $4.76, per member. It seems like a trivial amount, but yet our lodge and many others, still struggle to meet this goal every year. I’m asking everyone to please take a moment and donate at our website: www.elks1108.org. You can make a one-time donation, become a recurring donor at any amount you choose or, if it’s easier, just drop a check in the Secretary’s mailbox in the lodge lobby. It’s a great cause and well worth the trouble. District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler Brad Smith will be joining us for the Annual DDGER Visitation Thursday, September 5th: 3pm Audit & Visit, 4pm Committee Chairs & Officers’ Meting, 5pm Social Hour, 6pm Dinner, 7pm is Lodge Meeting and Initiation Ritual. The Officers and I all hope that you are enjoying our newly renovated pool. Although we have raised a goodly amount against the costs of renovation, we still owe approximately $30K on the project. Please donate toward the pool fund and/or help us plan a fundraiser. You can contact me or our Lodge Secretary for further information. Please see our calendar, bulletins, and flyers for other upcoming events and activities. Looking forward to being with you. Best wishes, Eric Exalted Ruler

Secretary Update • Pool • Delinquent members • Volunteer hours

Wow – another summer gone by. Hopefully you all used the pool and were able to enjoy the beautiful views from the deck. We are still about $35K short to pay for the renovation. THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED. We are requesting all members donate $200 to remain solvent with this project. Donate online, send a check, stop by and say hi and give us cash. Of course, any donation is appreciated! Smaller or larger… One of my main duties as Secretary is keeping track of membership. Although we have more renewed members this year, than last – we are still 85 members short of a complete roster. If you know someone who has not renewed, please reach out to them and find out why. Did they move? (let us know) Do they need financial assistance? (let us know) Do they need help at home or are suffering ill health? (let us know, we want to know) We are here for all members and can only help if we know who needs it. Please contact the office with any information about lapsed members. (415) 453 1108 or [email protected]

Volunteer Hours – Volunteering is an essential part of Elkdom – hours and money donated by our members to local charities, community events and those in need. The way we track this as an Order is by sending all volunteer hours to Grand Lodge for tallying. This is easy for #1108 – we all do LOTS OF HOURS. We just need you to record them on a regular basis. Weekly or monthly is fine.

Go to Website - www.elks1108.org Home page – scroll down to the Log your Hours red button Complete form – if you don’t see a specific category – choose admin and fill in the notes Dates can be for the whole month, one event, or an ongoing commitment ALL HOURS COUNT – meetings, planning, driving, photocopying, bartending, shopping, serving, cooking, etc. Everything EXCEPT LODGE MEETINGS.

Announcing Robert “Bob” L. Duitsman, Grand Exalted Ruler “Honoring the Past – Embracing the Future”

Robert "Bob" Duitsman was born in Inglewood, CA, and attended local schools including Inglewood High School, the University of Southern California, and Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles, receiving a Juris Doctor degree in 1981.

Bob joined the Culver City Elks Lodge in 1989. Moving through the chairs he was elected Exalted Ruler for 1993-94 and again in 1995-96. He was Association Vice-President in 2001-2002 during the presidency of John Carvalho and his wife Sandy and then District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler in 2005-2006 during the national presidency of the Honorable Louis J. "Jim" Grillo and his wife Lucia. He served on several district committees, but developed a particular interest in the ritual program. He has been a ritual judge since 1995 and served in a number of positions in the ritual community leading to CHEA Ritual Training Chair and finally CHEA Ritual Contest Chair in 2007-08. He also served on the CHEA Major Project Board of Trustees from 2013-2016, the last year as its Chair. On the Grand Lodge level, he served on the Committee on Judiciary for six years, 2009-15, the last two as Chair, and is currently in his third year as a Justice of the Grand Forum, in effect the Supreme Court of the Order. For two years he also served on the Grand Lodge Pardon Commission.

For over thirty-five years Bob has been an attorney in private practice in the Culver City area, with emphases in the areas of estate planning and parole revocation defense.

He is a Past Chair of the Culver City Chamber of Commerce, a Past President of the Culver City Lions Club, and a Past President of the Inglewood District Bar Association. For over twenty years he was a Temporary Judge of the Los Angeles Municipal and Superior Courts. For more than thirty years he has been a volunteer at the Culver City Senior Center, helping its members with their legal problems on a volunteer basis. What little he knows about speaking before groups he owes in large part to the Toastmasters organization, of which he is a thirty year member with a designation of Distinguished Toastmaster. He also knows a little about parliamentary procedure, having attained the designation of Professional Registered Parliamentarian through the National Association of Parliamentarians. He is finally an ordained elder at Knox Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles, having served four terms on its governing board.

Bob met the love of his life, Beth, in 1982, and they married in 1987. They do not have any children, unless you count their two dogs, Winston and Bobby. Together they live in the Ladera Heights area of Los Angeles County.

Bob enjoys gardening, puttering around the house, spending time with his dogs, and is one of only 144 people on earth who have finished all 32 editions of the Los Angeles Marathon, with a best time of 3:52.

Bob and Beth are proud and excited to have the opportunity to serve as President and First Lady of the California- Hawaii Elks Association this year, meeting and making friends during their travels, and talking about their slogan "Honoring the Past - Embracing the Future".

Announcing Bradley “Brad” K. Smith, District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler Bradley K. Smith, PER Eureka Elks Lodge #652, PDDGER Great Northwest District #920. Master Mason, Humboldt Masonic Lodge #79; Member of the Board of Directors of Pacific Marine Engineering, Inc., dba Pacific Outfitters, et al.; A Director of BOSS Development Corp. and BAS Properties; Humboldt County Fish and Game Commissioner; and Humboldt County Coroner / Public Administrator, Retired.

My wife Janet and I live in Eureka, California. My father became an Elk in the Medford, Oregon Lodge in 1950. I still have his membership cards. My father- in-law was a PER of Eureka Lodge. Daughter, Caroline Allbee, and two Granddaughters, Sydnee and Aleena live in Auburn, California. We are all members of the Order of Elks. Our Grandchildren will graduate from the same High School as I did, and hopefully, they will also attend Humboldt State University. I am a veteran, honorably discharged from the US Army, serving in 1963-1966. I drew proficiency pay as a Senior Medical Specialist, and hazard pay as a . I was an NCO, had 31 jumps, and enjoyed my experiences as best that anyone could under the circumstances. Through luck, I did not see combat during the Vietnam War, but saw its effects on fellow servicemen as a Senior Medic. I am proud to have served my country, and even more proud of how we veterans are now being treated by society. I retired from Humboldt County as the Coroner / Public Administrator after serving twenty-nine years in various law enforcement capacities. I started my career as a Deputy Sheriff and ended it as a Department Head. My career was diversified and included Search and Rescue, Management, Bailiff, Street Patrol, Special Services, Forensics and Investigations. I taught firearms, death investigation and evidence collection at the local Police Academy. I still occasionally teach specialty classes, such as “Man Tracking”. The most memorable events in my career were saving lives and finding the bad guys through forensics. I truly enjoyed my career, but realized that after 29 years, it was time to retire. I had dealt with enough bad guys and death investigations to last a lifetime. I have always enjoyed outdoor activities. Although academically biologists, my business partner and I started what evolved into several successful businesses during our senior year at Humboldt State University. We were commercial divers and instructors, which paid our way through college. Selling outdoor products allowed me to have the latest and best equipment. My business careers included Commercial Diving (Certified Instructor), Firearms (FBI trained and certified Instructor, and FFL holder), sales and service of Sporting Goods. I recently retired as Managing Owner of several businesses, including three retail stores and four commercial buildings. I still maintain ownership and sit on the Board of Directors. Although retired, I still occasionally guide hunters for Elk, Bear, and waterfowl. My clients come from all over the United States. I became an Elk in 1995. I have served as a Trustee, Chairman of the Trustees, Chaplain, Esquire, Leading Knight, and Exalted Ruler of Eureka Lodge number 652. I was the Business Practices Chair for The Great Northwest District for 5 years, and the CHEA Drug Awareness Chair or Vice Chair for 4 years. I am a Past District Deputy Grand Exalt- ed Ruler. My goals and objectives as a brother Elk have and will continue to be as a catalyst for the of Elkdom into a modern business, while continuing our traditions and maintaining our philanthropic ideals. Currently, I am doing that by actively promoting business practices throughout the district as a PDDGER and mentor. I hope to continue assisting Elkdom as it evolves into the future.
