While maintaining a focus on teaching, faculty members are also actively engaged in their disciplines through scholarly activity and service. This document does not list every single accomplishment of the University faculty, but even in its somewhat abbreviated mode, the list is impressive. Here you will find listed faculty awards, honors, performances, grants received, services rendered, offices held, art exhibitions, and lists of books and articles by some of the most prestigious publishing houses in the country. UWG faculty are dedicated to the transformational power of learning which includes teaching, research, and professional growth and development. Students are encouraged to participate in high‐impact practices such as First Year Seminars, Study Away / Study Abroad, Internships, and Capstone projects. It is quite impressive when faculty involve students in their disciplines through undergraduate research, a cornerstone of experiential learning for anyone truly interested in the inner‐workings of academe. You will also note something a bit new in this document of faculty production and that is notation of an accomplishment that is in some way connected to community engagement. This notation appears in that text as follows: [CEA]. West Georgia has always been an institution with ties to our community, both immediate and distant, and has always been engaged in a number of ways; therefore, while a majority of the CEA notations are connected to accomplishments listed under some form of service, there are numerous other notations under scholarship, performances, exhibitions, and grants, to name the most prevalent. The faculty of West Georgia feel an obligation to serve the community from simply lending a hand at public events to making some part of a community need an object of scholarly or artistic inquiry. This longstanding partnership with our community is something we don’t necessarily publicize very much but it is of exceptional importance for all of us in the larger community that includes the University. Roller coasters are iconic structures that provide safe thrills for riders. Safety is achieved using multiple safety mechanisms: for example, bogies have multiple wheels that hold trains on track, a block system prevents trains from colliding and riders are held in place with safety restraints. Regular maintenance checks are also performed to prevent accidents caused by failed parts. Roller coasters are designed using a heartline spline and calculating accelerations in all possible scenarios to prevent rollbacks and too high values of accelerations, which could cause damage to riders’ bodies. A reach envelope is applied to the spline to prevent riders from hitting nearby objects. The speed and curvature of the track combined create acceler- ations that need to be countered with adequate track and support structures. A track cross- section usually consists of rails, cross-ties and a spine, while support structures can vary depending on height and loads.

THE fact that Atlanta is comparatively a young city will doubtless lead many to the conclusion that her annals are short and simple, and in such shape as to give a historian very little trouble. It did not take' long for the author of this work to find that it was a more .difficult matter to obtain the facts and figures illustrating the growth and progress of Atlanta than would have been the case if he had attempted to write the history of a much older city. The presence among us of many of the old pioneers and early settlers, strange to say, has heretofore stood in the way of a systematic record of the city's onward march. Various suggestions, made from time to time, in regard to the organization of a Historical Society met with but little favor. Few citizens recognized the benefit of such a society, when they and their neighbors recollected nearly every important event that had occurred since the settlement of the place. In the older cities and towns the matter is viewed in a different light. In many instances no pains and expense have been spared to collect and preserve in permanent form the facts of history, and some of the societies organized for this purpose even in some of the flourishing Western cities not much older than Atlanta, have accumulated such a mass of valuable printed material that a stranger having access to it would find the work of writing a history almost purely mechanical.
