The Class of 1955 Volume 20 Issue 8 August 1, 2020 The Class of 1955 Luxury at the very finest, Lincoln, Cadillac, Lincoln and Packard. Unfortunately, we were not blessed with any articles from our members to publish in our Au- gust newsletter. Once again, we had to open the creaking door to the time machine and pull out an article to reprint in this issue. The year for 1955 was indeed a banner year for the automobile in- dustry in the United States. Almost everyone sold cars like they were going out of style. Chevrolet sold more cars than most people thought possible. This was due to some fresh styling and an ex- cellent small block V-eight engine, which really lit a fire under the Chevrolet brand. Buick also had their best year ever, taking third place away from Plymouth. I cannot remember a time when cars were not important to me. At that time nobody cared much about copyright stuff that’s why some Soviet cars are copies of some foreign Western cars. When adapting to domestic operating conditions, the car was thoroughly reworked by Soviet specialists. This article shows examples of how Soviet cars were copied from the foreign ones. For example, GAZ A was a close copy of the Ford A. Howev- er, it was a licensed copy, and Ford Motors knew about its Russian cousin’s existence. The government’s limo ZIS 110 was copied from the Packard 180, Moskvich 400 from the Opel Kadett K38, and Chaika reminded the Packard Carribean. And that’s only a few examples.
