Castriianthemum Vogt & Oberprieler, a New Genus
CASTRIIANTHEMUM VOGT & OBERPRIELER, A NEW GENUS OF THE COMPOSITAE-ANTHEMIDEAE by ROBERT VOGT & CHRISTOPH OBERPRIELER* Resumen VOGT, R. & CH. OBERPRIELER (1996). Castrilanthemum Vogt & Obeiprieler, un nuevo género de Compositae-Anthemideae. Anales Jard. Bot. Madrid 54:336-346 (en inglés). Se estudia en detalle Pyrethrum debeauxii, una especie anual endémica del sudeste de España, y se compara con los géneros cercanos. Esta especie debe adscribirse a un nuevo género, monotípico, Castrilanthemum Vogt & Oberprieler, que se describe aquí, a la vez que se propone la combinación C. debeauxii (Degen, Hervier & É. Rev.) Vogt & Oberprieler. Palabras clave: Spermatophyta, Compositae, Castrilanthemum, taxonomía, cladística, España. Abstract VOGT, R. & CH. OBERPRIELER (1996). Castrilanthemum Vogt & Oberprieler, a new genus of the Compositae-Anthemideae. Anales Jard. Bot. Madrid 54:336-346. Pyrethrum debeauxii, a poorly-known annual species endemic to SE-Spain, was studied in detail and compared with related genera. It is found to represent a new monotypic genus, Castrilanthemum Vogt & Oberprieler. The new combination C. debeauxii (Degen, Hervier & É. Rev.) Vogt & Oberprieler is proposed. Key words: Spermatophyta, Compositae, Castrilanthemum, taxonomy, cladistic, Spain. Pyrethrum debeauxii was described by uncertainty of its afnnities within this tribe A. von Degen and J. Hervier (in HERVIER, already dates back to Degen & Hervier (in 1905) on the basis of plant material collected HERVIER, 1905: 99) who write in the original in Andalusia at the beginning of this century diagnosis: "Planta nana, certe annua (...) facie by Élisée Reverchon, who distributed the Anthemidis cujusdam, a congeneribus specimens in his well-known exsiccata acheniis ecoronulatis valde diversa et in "Plantes d'Espagne" in 1904 and 1905. -

UK ABSTRACT Although the hybrid diseipline of biochernieal systernaties has been a distinet field of study for only about ten years, it has had a telling irnpact on taxonornie praetiee. Nevertheless. the ehernieal approaeh, with its ernphasis on thc exaet, tends to exlude rnueh ofthe wealth ofnatural phenomena that are the backhone of taxonomy. It is neeessary for the ehernist and bioehernist to acquire a bettcr understanding of the nature of classification before undertaking surveys. More thought on infraspeeifie variation is also required, and thc tentative nature of rnost phylogenetie proposals needs to be rnore widely appreciated. These problerns are diseussed in relation to reeent sturlies involving different types of ehernieal eornpounds. including proteins, and suggestions are made for future priorities in chernotaxonornie research. INTRODUCTION Although the use of chemical characters in taxonomy and systematics has a very long history, the emergence of the hybrid discipline biochemical systematics or chemotaxonomyt as a distinctive and developed field of study dates back only about ten years. lt was marked by the publication of such works as Alston and Turner's pioneer text Biochemical Systematics (1963), the symposium edited by Swain, Chemical Plant Taxonomy (1963), another by Leone, Taxonomie Biochemistry and Serology (1964), Mentzer and Fatianoffs Actualites de Phytochimie Fondamentale (1964) and, -

Problems concern rank (subgenus vs. genus); type designation; cor- rect place of valid publication; alternative names; and other miscellaneous issues. An annotated list with correct nomenclatural information for 391 generic names or designations is provided, including types (newly designated here for 17 names) and one new combination (Gyptis tanacetifolia). The current taxonomic disposition of Cassini’s genera and the accepted names for the listed typonyms are consistently mentioned. The familiar names Felicia and Chrysopsis, already conserved, are threatened by unlisted earlier synonyms, and currently used Fulcaldea turns out to be illegitimate. Proposals to deal with these problems by conservation are being presented separately. Christoph Oberprieler The Systematics of Anthemis L. (Compositae, Anthemideae) in W and C North Africa Abstract Oberprieler, Ch.: The Systematics of Anthemis L. (Compositae, Anthemideae) in W and C North Africa. - Bocconea 9: 1-328.1998. - ISSN 1120-4060. Anthemis L., a mainly Mediterranean and SW Asian genus of the Compositae-An themideae, is revised far the W and C North African part (Marocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya) of its distribution range. On the basis of detailed morphological studies ali species are fully de scribed and illustrations of habit, leaves, involucral bracts, and pales are presented, along with photographs of mature achenes under SEM and of transverse sections of achenes under LM. Keys far the deterrnination of ali species, subspecies, and varieties are provided. Complete synonymies are given, inc1uding the typification of the names as far as possible. Oistribution maps of ali taxa studied are presented. Chromosome numbers and karyotypes far most taxa are provided and discussed. In the area covered, Anthemis is represented by 25 species belonging to two subgenera, four sections, and four series. Three taxa are described as new to science: A. maritima subsp. pseudopunctata Oberprieler, A. stiparum subsp. intermedia Oberprieler, and A. zaianiea Oberprieler.
