Drottningholms Slottsteater invites you to a new and exciting season full of riches. Our wonderful theatre is absolutely unique in the world and has a story all of its own. Here, between stage and auditorium, new and different emotions are born every evening. Maestro Mozart, constantly fascinating as a composer and storyteller, is the source of our inspiration for this summer’s programme. Artistic brilliance and a will to communicate with his audience are strong ingredients both among Mozart’s talents and this summer’s productions. We wish to inspire you, our audience, to discover new works and encounter the kind of artistic expression which calls forth emotions, tells important stories. We are proud to present Mozart’s Mitridate, now fully staged in Sweden for the very first time, here with a fantastic star-studded ensemble including Miah Persson in one of the leading roles. An internationally strong artistic team, led by director Francisco Negrin, will create an elegant, different and beautiful performance. The story of the fall of a dictatorial empire and the start of a new era, hopeful of possible reconciliation and budding true love, contains several of the most marvellous arias in the history of opera. This season’s Artist in Residence, David Stern, leads the Drottningholm Theatre Orchestra, and apart from conducting Mitridate he will be leading our Gala Concert with wonderful soloist Ann Hallenberg. Mozart’s opera Idomeneo will be the other work this summer, with a big production in tandem with the Royal Swedish Opera. The Royal Opera Orchestra will be conducted by Lawrence Renes, and Malin Byström sings the role of Elettra in a grand and dramatic story, directed by Tobias Theorell. Within the framework of Esprit! we are including a production by director Philip Zandén with Loa Falkman and Sofie Asplund declaring their love for the magic of the theatre to music by Mozart, Rameau and Kraus, together with the Drottningholm Theatre Orchestra under Maria Lindal, the theatre’s new musical leader. New York, NY – May 25, 2017 – Composer and director Michel van der Aa’s perspective-bending chamber opera Blank Out, based on the life and work of South African poet Ingrid Jonker, is reimagined within Park Avenue Armory’s Wade Thompson Drill Hall in its North American premiere this September. Miah Persson performs live and is accompanied by a 3D film featuring Roderick Williams and the Netherlands Chamber Choir. The design of the space will capitalize on the malleability of the Drill Hall and the unique backdrop of its architecture with elements that heighten the panoramic landscapes found in the film, utilize the room’s iconic vaulted ceiling, and create a stage that is interchangeably vast and intimate throughout the production. The resulting effect blurs the lines between virtual and live performance and heightens the dissonance between perception and reality within the opera itself. Weaving together Jonker’s poetry and elements of her life story, van der Aa’s work explores the reconstruction of memory, fragility of human nature, response to trauma, and the notion of individual realities. Blank Out premiered at the Dutch National Opera as part of the Opera Forward Festival in March 2016 and since has seen success in Rome, Beijing, Helsinki, Hannover, and Luzern.
