Fax: +91-11-46070379 Sitrep-3 Cyclone Nilam Dated 01.11.2012, 00:30 AM Cyclonic storm ‘NILAM’ crossed north Tamilnadu Coast near Mahabalipuram, strength weakened CURRENT SITUATION: The cyclonic storm “NILAM” moved northwestwards and lay centered at 20:30 hours IST of today, the 31st October 2012 near latitude 13.00N and longitude 79.50E, about 60 km west of Chennai. The system would move northwestwards and weaken into a deep depression during next 06 hours. (Source: IMD Cyclone Nilam warning dated 31.10.2012, 09:30 PM) According to IAG Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry, the cyclone did not have much strength and there was no report of damage till late night of 31.10.2012. Rains are consistent but are not heavy. HIGH WIND-WAVE ALERT FOR TAMIL NADU High wind waves in the range of 3.0- 9.0 meters are forecasted during 17:30 hrs on 31-10-2012 to 17:30 hrs on 01-11-2012 along the coast between Nagapattinam to Pulicat of Tamil Nadu coast. High wind waves in the range of 3.0- 9.0 meters are forecasted during 17:30 hrs on 31-10-2012 to 17:30 hrs on 01-11-2012 along the coast of Kanyakumari to kilakarai of southern Tamil Nadu. Significant Wave Height (SWH) is the average of the largest one-third of the waves. The theoretical maximum wave height is approximately equal to two times Significant Wave Height (SWH). -

The Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia has been established under the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) since 1966. In 1991, the Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia has become an independent intergovernmental organization. Anonymous Referee #2 Received and published: 22 March 2014 Reviewer's comment: This paper describes and analyses the coastal sea level response to two storm events at the end of 2011 in the north Indian Ocean. The authors use the sea level and atmospheric observations at 9 locations along the Indian coast and perform a classical but robust analysis (spectral analyses and multi-linear regression). Although there are no new findings, it gives a fair idea of the causes of the sea level variation in response to these strong atmospheric events. The Figures, Tables and References are clear and support well the present text. It is also interesting to have an analysis done at large scale and on both sides of the Indian Subcontinent (Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal). The scientific quality of the paper is good but in my opinion the presentation of the results is poor and makes the paper hard to read and the purpose of the authors difficult to follow. -

Cyclones form over whole-hearted tropical oceans and change to the land under the act of routing forces. India's eastern coastline is one of the most violent wind inclined regions on the planet. Despite the fact that the coastline of Orisha has been just about 17% of the Indian eastern coastline, yet Orisha has been influenced by about 35% of all cyclonic and serious cyclonic tempests that have crossed the eastern coastline and related tempest floods that have been regularly immersing huge areas along the coasts. A Cyclone is an enormous scale air mass that turns around a solid focal point of low climatic weight caused due to low atmospheric pressure over oceans resulting in rainfall in the coastal regions. The results of this study indicate that the double integration technique has good potential for calculating the average rainfall during the super cyclone. IMPACT ASSESSMENT OF GAJA CYCLONE IN COASTAL FISHERMAN HAMLETS IN TAMILNADU, SOUTH INDIA *G.Sathiyan, Centre for study of social exclusion and inclusive policy, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli-24. *C.Lakshumanan, Centre for Disaster Management and Coastal Research, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli-23. Abstract The cyclones are natural disaster in coastal areas and severely affect the livelihood. This study mainly focuses the assessment of impacts of GAJA cyclone. The landfall of cyclone was on November 16 2018 between Cuddalore and Pamban. The damages assessment was carried out in the field after 5 days from the landfall. The damages of settlements, plantations, causalities, boats and electric poles are noticed during the field survey. Higher number of causalities was reported in Nagapattinam district. The maximum inundation and run up was measured in Nagapattinam and the damaged electric poles were also seen along the road sides. Coconut and Banana plantation damages are higher in Thanjavur district whereas, settlement damages are seen in Pudukkottai and Thiruvarur districts. Nagapattinam was the worst affected district among the other coastal deltaic districts. This kind of field observation study for the damage assessment and measurement of inundation and run up will be useful for researchers, planners and local government for disaster mitigation. Key words Cyclone, GAJA, Impact assessment, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam 1 Introduction Cyclones are the most common natural disaster, particularly in peninsular India. Most of the tropical cyclones originating in the Bay of Bengal region often turn into super cyclone before hitting the continental land mass (Pradipta et al. 2017 ). The cyclonic storm originating in the Bay of Bengal comparatively more dangerous than those hitting from the Arabian Sea because it is relatively cooler than the Bay of Bengal.
