OCTOBER 2012 St Giles’ Medbourne So we had a good summer if you missed the showers. Our water butts are all full. We may not have been able to enjoy the outdoors as much as normal but Harvest Festival 2012 the weather has not stopped the gardens from growing and giving us plenty to do. Autumn is well and truly on the way and we shall soon be admiring the changing colours, look around your local area to see what inspires you, and would work in your garden. 7 October 2012
Many Asters are now coming to their best, along with Dahlias and Cosmos. 11am The last two are great value plants, as they will continue to flower up to the first frost. To get the best from them remember to dead head, taking back the old flower stalks back to a node. followed by
Asters are a wonderful plant to grow, from the wide range Bring and Share Harvest Lunch of colours to the many different sizes from 30cm/1ft to 100cm/3/4ft. making them a versatile plant for all gardens. Do they require any work, well yes they are herbaceous plants and as with all herbaceous plants they require cutting back, normally in the autumn but some people will do this in the spring - this does need to be done before they start GREAT EASTON HARVEST LUNCH sprouting. As with all plants they do require feeding so use a general fertiliser along with mulching in the spring which will help hold moisture as they don’t like dry conditions. Medbourne Cricket Club THE 2012 PARISH PROJECT “Light in Africa” Concert 16 September 2012 As the cricket season nears its conclusion our village club has had what is arguably its most successful season ever. Drain at corner of Springbank: Water escaping on to the road at the corner of Springbank is coming from a storm drain. It had been reported and Highways personnel did come and remove mud and debris from the drain, however, it appears to have become clogged again and water is once more escaping. It has therefore been reported again and given a new Highways job number. Christmas Disco
Drains at corner of Main Street / Drayton Road: The very poor state of these drains has also been reported. This too has been given a Highways job number. th 15 December Ragwort: This had been reported at the July Parish Council meeting as being out of control in Leviathan Wood and was followed up with the Estate Manager. We are sorry to hear that Freda Andrews, Jenny Sandars’ mother, has moved from Medbourne to Aberdeen House in Uppingham. Jenny and Keith have been absolutely won- derful looking after her for many years at Marlow Court, but following a fall and a spell In hospital it was obvious she couldn’t live on her own any longer. We hope she will be very happy and make some new friends and enjoy watching the pupils of Uppingham School passing her window.
We have moved the date of our Christmas Bazaar to Friday, Adult £6, Children £1 23 rd November. We are holding the event in the Village Hall as usual and we hope this will encourage everyone to get in the mood for buying Christmas presents. MEDBOURNE TENNIS CLUB
A good Summer’s tennis has been enjoyed by all the members. Coaching classes will continue with Kevin Hoey on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays and can be booked either Parish of Six Saints circa Holt through him or Oscar Muto.
The Leics Summer League matches had good results with Men’s 1 – struggling; Men’s 11 – promoted; Ladies’ 1 and 11 – holding position and the Mixed team promoted.
A Ladies Winter League team is being arranged starting in October. Please contact Fleur Clarke if you would like to play. Sunday 9 December 2012 New members are always welcome. The Sunday teas fundraising event held for the Medbourne Hollow nature area over the August Bank Holiday weekend was a huge success. The support over the two days was fantastic with lots of Tickets (which include an extensive buffet and the first glass of cakes, offers of help, significant donations and large numbers of you visiting us for tea. The record breaking sum of £492 was raised wine) are available for a suggested minimum donation of £10. All which has now been deposited with the Parish Council to be used for are welcome to attend. Tickets will be available soon and details the maintenance of the Hollow and the bird feeding costs. Many will be published in the next magazine. thanks to everyone for their support.
