Chapter Four Emergence Re-Evaluated
CHAPTER FOUR EMERGENCE RE-EVALUATED 4.1 INTRODUCTION Whether this will lead to a rejuvenation of a flagging tradition or whether the historical programme of actively developing an “Afrikaner culture” was in any way cardinal to the emergence of a Pretoria Regionalism so as to deny it a continuity as a Third Vernacular has yet to be seen (Fisher 1998:140) He [Fisher] later introduces a surprisingly apt phrase derived from Frampton which has general application: “Modern tempered by critical regionalism”. He introduces too, the concepts of identity and “sentiment”, an 18C term, like the word sublime, which alerts us to the fact that we are in the presence of a myth – in the 19C, the myth of utopia; in the 20C the myth or myths of nationalism and the misreading, if not deliberate falsification, of history (Chipkin 2008:377). This chapter: Re-evaluates the accessible historical continuum and stylistic labels assigned to the ‘emergence’ of our generation. Re-thinks the local stylistic context and situation pertinent to our agents. 4.2 SELECTED LITERATURE This chapter selects literature to investigate the third sub question: What were the local stylistic constructs that formulated an emergence relative to our generation? The introductory quotes imply a literary opposition surrounding regional labelling which sources tie to our generation. In the book he co-edits, Architecture of the Transvaal, Roger Fisher’s essay ‘The Third Vernacular: Pretoria Regionalism – Aspects of an Emergence’ is the first essential source for the critical discourse analysis required for this chapter. If Fisher (1998: 124) postulates, “Afrikaner origins seem to have been pivotal in the emergence of a Pretoria Regionalism”, then Herman Giliomee’s The Afrikaners: Biography of a People (2003) is the most recognised and viable source to assist in a critical re- evaluation of that hypothesis. -

There are few places as magnificent and varied as Brazil. On the one hand, it has been blessed with the most beautiful beaches and breathtaking natural wonders, on the other, it has produced visionary architects such as Oscar Niemeyer, Lucio Costa and Affonso Reidy who have made Brazilian modernism world-renowned. In addition to designing acclaimed buildings such as the Ministry of Health and Culture and the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, these visionaries planned the modernist city of Brasília from the ground up. As an emerging BRICS state, and since hosting the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics, Brazil has received more attention in recent years. These events have been the impetus behind many new ambitious infrastructure projects. Our journey takes us to the four major Brazilian cities, each one known for its architectural and cultural characteristics. Belo Horizonte, Brazil: a Review of the SWITCH Project1
Towards integrated urban water management in Belo Horizonte, Brazil: A review of the SWITCH project1 Sônia Knauer2, Nilo de Oliveira Nascimento3, John Butterworth Stef Smits4 and Emanuele Lobina5 I. INTRODUCTION Water management and urban planning in Belo Horizonte The city of Belo Horizonte was established in the 1890s as the capital of the State of Minas Gerais becoming the first modern “planned” city in Brazil. Streets were laid out on a broadly spaced grid to create a pleasant living environment and facilitate the construction of houses and laying of pipes, and space was dedicated to squares and parks. Chief engineer, Aarão Reis, foresaw a broad sub-urban fringe around the city, as a transition between the urban and the “natural” environment that would also contain unlimited urban growth. Niemeyer planned Lake Pampulha in the middle of the neighbourhood, partly to act as a flood controlling reservoir but also to improve the landscape. -

Sex Tourism and the Importance of Images
SEX TOURISM AND THE IMPORTANCE OF IMAGES Swedes in Natal Charlotte Pruth ISSUE 11 October 2008 This article discusses the responsibility of travel agents and governmental tourism agencies for the increase in male sex tourism in Natal, in Northeast Brazil. It examines the work of the NGO Ecpat in Sweden and their Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation in Travel and Toursim, which calls for travel agents to provide information to travellers. “Each time that I return from a trip to Brazil, I am filled with the same feeling, most closely reminding of passion. It is as though had I been the guest of a wonderful woman who was not completely conscious of her beauty. Who dances and smiles, full of life and possibilities, but who for ever keeps a bit of homelessness and melancholy in the bottom of her dark eyes” (Fritidsresor Vinter 2003-04). The quote is taken from one of the Swedish travel agent Fritidsresor’s catalogue texts on Brazil. It might be considered harmless, but looking at decades of image making on Brazil (connoting to words like exotic, women, sex, samba and beaches) as well as last decade’s increased sex tourism, the quote becomes more disturbing. When you buy your holiday trip to foreign countries, you cannot touch upon it and see for yourself, experience the product before you buy it. What you buy is primarily an image. Moreover, the image created around a certain country or tourist destination has everything to do with how many tourists are attracted, but also with what kind of tourism is attracted. -

SPERLING & CAMPOS 35th WEDC International Conference, Loughborough, UK, 2011 THE FUTURE OF WATER, SANITATION AND HYGIENE: INNOVATION, ADAPTATION AND ENGAGEMENT IN A CHANGING WORLD Restoration of Lake Pampulha, Brazil by using sanitation and in-lake techniques E.v. Sperling & M.O. Campos, Brazil BRIEFING PAPER 1141 The paper presents a broad view about the measures for restoration of Lake Pampulha, Brazil. This man made reservoir is located in a dense inhabited urban area and constitutes the main touristic attraction of the city of Belo Horizonte. Since several decades the water body receives the discharge of untreated sewage from domestic as well from industrial sources, what leads to severe episodes of algal blooms in the water surface. In order to combat this eutrophication problem some measures have been already carried out and others are planned in a short term. These preventive and corrective techniques provides an efficient association between sanitation processes and the application of in-lake treatment actions. Moreover a hydrodynamic modelling has been also carried out with the purpose of evaluating the water circulation and the water residence time in the compartments of the lake. Introduction Lake Pampulha (Figure 1) is a man made reservoir located within the urban area of the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The lake was constructed originally with the objective of water supply, but the degradation of the water quality prevented the further use of this source as such. Presently Lake Pampulha, which is one of the most important tourist attractions of the region, is suitable only for some restricted recreational activities. The lake has an area of approximately 2,6 km2 and a volume of about 14 million m3. -
