Milestones of 11.11 Global Shopping Festival
▪ Alibaba Group’s 11.11 Global Shopping Festival is the world’s largest online shopping event by number of merchants and consumers. ▪ The presales data and the first sales window of this year’s 11.11 Global Shopping Festival indicate strong consumption rebound and higher-than-ever demand in China. ▪ Following the impact of COVID-19 on the global retail sector, the 11.11 Global Shopping Festival aims to serve as a catalyst for international businesses, helping them meet Chinese consumers’ rising demand for brands. WHAT’S NEW THIS YEAR? EXTENDED FESTIVAL TO ALLOW MORE NEW BRANDS AND SMES TO PARTICIPATE o The 2020 11.11 Shopping Festival has two sales windows: November 1-3 and the typical 24 hours over the course of November 11. The presales period will also span across two phases: from October 21 to October 31 and from November 4 to November 10. o This year, we have strengthened our focus on SMEs – exemplified by our first-ever 11.11 “Go Global Pitch Fest” to make it even easier for small businesses to join the event. By creating a second sales window, more merchants representing new exciting brands and small businesses will have the opportunity to participate in the extended festival. LAUNCH PAD FOR NEW BRANDS AND NEW PRODUCTS o More than 250,000 brands will participate in this year’s 11.11, which is expected to attract about 800 million consumers. o Nearly half of Tmall merchants have launched a total of 40 million new products for 11.11. o To meet Chinese consumers’ increasing demand for international products, Alibaba’s cross-border marketplace Tmall Global will bring more than 26,000 imported brands from 84 countries and regions to Chinese consumers, 1.4x the number of imported brands from last year. -

50 Things You Didn't Know
50 Things You Didn’t Know You Didn’t Know About Pens © Tancia Ltd 2013 50 things you didn’t know you didn’t know about pens…. The History of Pens The word ‘pen’ means feather The word ‘pen’ comes from the Latin, penna which translates as ‘feather’ in En- glish. This word was chosen due to the use of feathers to make quill pens from the 8th to the 19th century. Penne pasta is so-called because the shape resembles the pointed part of a quill pen. The very first pens were made from hollow bones and kitchen knives It is thought that cave paintings were created using a sharpened stick whose main purpose was skinning and cutting meat. The stick would have been dipped in a primitive ink made from berries or soot mixed with animal fats or human saliva. Hollow bones were also used to create an airbrushing technique where hands and other objects were used as stencils. Examples of ink from Biblical times still exist today The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in the 1940s in a collection of caves and contain an extensive collection of religious writings that have been dated between the 3rd century BC and the 1st century AD. They were written with three different types of ink; two of which were black and the third, red. The black inks were made from several ingredients including carbon soot from olive oil lamps whilst the red ink contained mercury sulphide, also known as cinnabar from which vermillion pigment is obtained. Goose feathers from living birds make the best quills The strongest quills come from living birds and are most commonly goose feath- ers. -

Some of the most expensive fountain pens in the world include LMont Blanc, Caran d’Ache, and Aurora. Many would recall that not too long ago, a controversy erupted over Mont Blanc’s limited-edition “Gandhi pens” and a case was filed before the Kerala High Court. There were two limited editions in fact, one in silver and the other in gold, a ‘Limited Edition 3000’ (i.e., 3,000 of it were manufactured) and a Limited Edition 241 (‘241’ for the 241 miles of the Salt March; 241 pieces of it were made). Both kinds had an image of Mahatma Gandhi on the nib. Mont Blanc’s decision to manufacture these pens provoked massive controversy: to begin with, it violated the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act of 1950, which restricts use of the name or pictorial representation of Mahatma Gandhi. -
