6 2014 Presidents Report What a year, it was my first full year in the role as President. We have worked very closely with the AOC to align our fundraising strategy to give us the best opportunity to hit our targets. Our target is $1M (with $7.8M being the National Figure). Apart from fundraising our other focus being on the PDC and Athlete wellbeing and the Olympians Club. With that in mind we spent the year hard at work, continuing on with our legacy events and putting together a team of people to go to work on a new initiative and new direction. Lets take a look at what we have been up to!

Sochi 2014 Throughout 16 days of action packed competition we saw 60 Australian athletes compete on the world stage at the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games. We witnessed triumph and heartbreak as the Australian Olympic Winter Team campaign concluded with 3 Medals and a host of top 5, 10, and 16 results. Queensland had 5 Athletes compete at the Games, Alex Ferlazzo – Luge, Deanna Lockett – Short Track Skating, Ross Peraudo – Alpine Skiing, Astrid Radjenovic – Bobsleigh and Michelle Steele – Skeleton. Deanna achieving a Top 10 result in the 1000m Short Track Skating.

Pierre de Coubertin Awards The Pierre de Coubertin Awards were again a highlight on the QOC calendar this year. To see the looks on the students faces when presented with their Awards continues to be a highlight for me personally. The presentation was held on Saturday 12 July 2014 at Somerville House in South Brisbane. 126 Recipients attended out of 201 Nominations received this year. This presentation was a group effort and could not have been so successful without the help of all involved. Lara Davenport Chair - Education Commission, Lisa Zoomers, and four University of Queensland students, through the Centre for Olympic Studies, Shannyn Hermann, Maressa Calthorpe-Croft, Stephen Butterworth and Joshua Newby. Olympians were also involved in the Ceremony. I interviewed 5 Olympians. John Konrads, 3-Time Olympian – Swimming (Gold Medallist Rome 1960); Sharon Sullivan – Figure Skating; Joshua Jefferis – Gymnastics; Andrew McCabe – Athletics and Andrew Grant - Volleyball. They spoke about their experience on and off the field during their Olympic representation.

Olympians Club of Queensland Julie McDonald has been working hard to engage the Olympians. It is proving more difficult and we are investigating more effective ways to bring the group together. The AOC remain supportive of the Olympians Club and it remains a priority of the QOC to ensure our athletes stay connected and are supported during and after their Olympic representation.

7 Qantas Celebrity Golf Classic The 2nd Golf Day of the quad was held on Monday 20th October, 2014 and the Queensland Olympic Council (QOC) in association with Red and White Events, ran the annual Qantas Celebrity Golf Classic (QCGC) at Links Hope Island. All teams played for the David Fordham Cup, in honour of his memory and contribution to the Olympic family. Our Golf Day’s have been successful in the past as part of our Fund Raising Calendar, and we will continue to explore this opportunity moving forward, however it is becoming more and more challenging to deliver a full field. The day raised $19,988 for the 2016 team fund.

IGNITE Series The AOC in conjunction with the SOC’s began the ‘IGNITE’ Series, where athletes from different sports can begin to share knowledge and build friendships on the Road to Rio. Qld held 2 ‘IGNITE’ Sessions in 2014. Mon 15th Dec at QSAC and Tues 16th Dec at Bond University Gold Coast. Stage two – ‘ASPIRE’ is due to roll out in 2015 for our QLD athletes again in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. #RoadtoRio

8 Queensland Premier’s Athlete Farewell Dinner for the Australian Olympic Team Planning and preparation is continuing for this inaugural gala event with the formation of committees to ensure we deliver a prestigious and premium experience for Queensland to raise the maximum funds for the Australian Olympic Team. Mark Stockwell accepted the position as Chairman of the Team Appeal Committee and has begun assembling a great team of people to assist us to reach our targets. We also engaged Think Education students to be part of the research and development stage of the invitation collateral (which keeps us connected to the community and education as well as involving the up and coming talent) and will endeavour to begin the sales process in April 2015.

The Year Ahead • 2015 will be a busy year preparing for the Queensland Premier’s Athlete Farewell Dinner on 21st May 2016. From invitations to sponsors to table sales. It will be an exciting challenge. • ‘IGNITE’ Series #RoadtoRio will continue to evolve as we get closer to the games. In closing, 2014 saw us finish the year with a total of $89,884 raised for the Team Appeal Fund. We worked closely with the Newman government towards an Australian Olympic Team contribution for the RIO quad. I have continued to enjoy building a team of dedicated people to continue to uphold the Olympic brand and its values over the last 12 months. I love working with my fellow Olympians (especially Julie, Paul, Sara and Toby), my Vice President Ray Ebert, who is a wealth of sporting knowledge, and the amazing Trevor Beckingham, who’s dedication and unwavering commitment to the movement continues to inspire us all. Also a special thanks to Lisa Zoomers who runs the QOC office with precision detail, enthusiasm and flare. We all look forward to the next 12 months and beyond as we continue to aim for our $1 million target and prepare for the Queensland Premier’s Athlete Farewell Dinner in 2016. Thank you all for your amazing efforts as we continue to travel the ROAD TO RIO! Yours in sport,

Natalie Cook OAM President

9 2014 Secretary General’s Report 2014 is one of those in between years where all the turmoil of the post Games AGM and election of Office Bearers has taken place, and we are able to sit down and set the scene and programs for the next Games, in this case Rio de Janeiro in 2016. This is not to say that the 2014 Winter Olympics held in Sochi, Russia were not a highlight for the year but we have very little involvement from an administrative perspective and no fundraising involvement. Other highlights have been sufficiently covered in other reports that make up this Annual Report so there is little more than for me to touch on the highlights. At the AGM in March Order of Merit Awards were bestowed on Mr Richard Powell (Past President 2001 - 2013) and Mr Duncan Free (Rowing). In education we again conducted a very successful Pierre de Coubertin Awards program and a full report of this can be found in the Education Commission Report. This event remains as our flagship education event. In fundraising we were able to consolidate ideas and strategy for our effort for Rio with preliminary planning now well advanced. We did conduct the Qantas Celebrity Golf Classic but later than usual due to a number of earlier clashes. In QOC history we were finally able to establish the origins of the QOC after finding an article in the Brisbane Courier Mail dated Friday 19th September 1913 which in part stated .....” A meeting of representatives of athletic bodies was held in the Grand Central Hotel last night for the purpose of forming a Queensland Olympic Council. The chair was taken by Mr DS Carter (Q.A.A.A) and there was a representative attendance of ladies and gentlemen”.... The end result was that the QOC was formed on 18th September 1913, unfortunately this information only came to light subsequent to being able to celebrate our 100 years.

Administration Report Following the restructure of our administrative processes as previously reported we now efficiently manage our resources and reporting requirements. This is due to the effort of Lisa Zoomers our Operations Manager who diligently attends to the day to day operation of the office. I believe that we are now in the best position to meet our administrative obligations and face the challenges of the effort in the lead up to Rio. The Board met 6 times during the year and these were well attended by Board Members. The results of our deliberations is evidenced by the smooth transition from being basically a new Board last year to a very effective and functional Board now that is progressing the QOC Strategic Agenda. On the AOC front we experienced a number of changes the most dramatic of which was the resignation of long term Secretary General Craig Phillips. Craig’s counsel and input will be sadly missed by us but we look forward to new leadership under Fiona de Jong who has been appointed to replace Craig and has already implemented a number of initiatives aimed at strengthening the link with SOC’s. We look forward to working with her to achieve this. Again in May, 3 of us , Natalie, Lisa and myself, attended the AOC AGM and attendant SOC meetings where we were able to make a contribution rather than just learn. We also hosted a visit from Jocelyn Webb – AOC Corporate Services Director at our last Board meeting for the year where she was able to provide updated corporate information to the Board. We thank her for making her time available to present to the Board. Throughout the year we have continued to be active in our Olympic education programs and in working with athletes to spread our key messages on the Olympic ideals and active healthy lifestyle choices. 10 Work has continued on the process to review our Memorandum and Articles of Association (Constitution) and we have continued the process to upgrade and update these documents so that they may better service our needs. The result of this work will at some stage require us to place these proposed changes before our membership and we would ask that you give them your due consideration at the appropriate time.

Thanks We have continued to support a number of activities throughout Queensland with Olympians when requested and again I thank all of them for their continued support of our activities as they have a huge role to play in promoting our activities. Similarly 2014 again saw the QOC supported by some wonderful volunteers across all our operational areas. Outside of fundraising activities we had numerous volunteers assist us with the Pierre de Coubertin Awards and a number of students from south east Queensland universities undertake work experience placements with us. We thank them for their support and the work that they perform. Our flagship education program, the Pierre de Coubertin Awards, was again a wonderful success with over 500 guests attending the Awards Ceremony in July. To all the hardworking Education Commission members and volunteers thank you for your continued effort in helping us promote the Olympic ideals through our education program. Our particular appreciation is also extended to Somerville House for hosting the Awards Ceremony again this year. In the background has also been Andrew Guiver and the group that have continued to progress our fundraising activities albeit in a reduced capacity following an Olympic year. But your continued efforts are very much appreciated. Andrew also provides our much needed and appreciated support through Red and White Events and we thank him for that as well. Before I conclude I would like to restate last years comments and pay tribute to the efforts of our Operations Manager, Lisa Zoomers. Her enthusiasm and zest for life is only rivalled by that of our President Natalie Cook. Lisa is a bright effervescent personality who has revitalised the administrative operation of the QOC. Her commitment and attention to detail has resulted in a revitalised approach to many of our initiatives. She makes my job so much easier and as a result I believe the quality of what we do is second to none. Lisa, thank you. Between the enthusiasm of you and Natalie you drive me to achieve better things for the organisation, even if you both are going to wear me out in the process in trying to keep up. Finally to the Board, thank you for your continued confidence in entrusting me with this role and providing the support, enthusiasm and dedication to guide us through what has been another wonderful year. We have achieved a great deal and we have so much more to do. The beauty of working with Olympians is that they inherently know what teamwork is all about and their commitment is second to none, we do have a great team so let the journey continue.

Trevor Beckingham OAM FCPA Secretary-General

11 2014 Education Commission Report The following outlines the education activities of the Queensland Olympic Council for 2014. Pierre de Coubertin Awards In 2014, 201 secondary students were recipients of the Pierre de Coubertin (PdC) Award, 126 students (62%) attended the Awards ceremony and the Leadership Workshop. Nomination packs were sent out to each Queensland Secondary School in March 2014. The theme for the 2014 PdC Awards was: Youth and the future of the Olympic Movement in the Digital World. Processing applications and preparation of the Awards Ceremony would not have been possible without the incredible work of Lisa Zoomers and the assistance provided by volunteer Centre of Olympic Studies students Shannyn Hermann, Maressa Calthorpe-Croft, Stephen Butterworth and Joshua Newby from the University of Queensland. The thoroughness of her event management meant that the delivery of the Ceremony went ahead without disruption or delay.

Awards Presentation Ceremony The Pierre de Coubertin Awards Ceremony was held on Saturday the 12th of July at Somerville House, South Brisbane. Our resident Pierre de Coubertin MC, Victoria Carthew ran the 2014 event; as always, she engaged the audience with her knowledge, humour and passion for the Olympic Movement. We were honoured and humbled to have special guest Corporal Daniel Keighran VC as our keynote speaker, and present awards at the ceremony. Corporal Keighran received the Pierre de

12 Coubertin Award in 2000 and received the highest award in the Australian Honours System in 2012 - The Victoria Cross for . Natalie Cook interviewed the Olympic Panel consisting of Olympians from Summer and Winter Olympics which was a highlight of the ceremony for the students and their guests. Olympians Sharon Sullivan, John Konrads, Andrew Grant, Joshua Jefferis and Andrew McCabe shared stories about their experiences at the and gave advice to our rising leaders. As in previous years we invited recipients to present their creative pieces during the proceedings. Liam Blake performed an acoustic guitar piece that gave the audience goose bumps and literary presentations were performed by Juanita Allingham, All Souls & St Gabriela School, and Tamasyn Carman, Innisfail State College who executed “The Dream… in the Digital Age” brilliantly. These presentations were a highlight of the ceremony and incredibly moving and awe-inspiring for the audience. To celebrate the success of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics an Olympic highlights package was showcased, and a motivational piece by Laurie Lawrence ‘ A Poem of Inspiration’ concluded the Awards Ceremony. Student Feedback Each year participating students are asked to provide feedback about the Awards Ceremony and Leadership Workshop. In 2014, 81 recipients responded to an online survey emailed at the conclusion of the presentation. The results from the Pierre de Coubertin Awards Ceremony survey included: • 94% of students achieved a greater awareness about the fundamental aims of the Olympic movement. • 85% of students achieved further understanding about Pierre de Coubertin and his philosophy of the Olympic Movement. • 97% of students would encourage students in the future to aim to be involved in the PdC Awards Ceremony. The results of the Leadership Workshop survey included: • 89% of participants agreed that through the Leadership Workshop they achieved a greater awareness of the links between the fundamental aims of the Olympic Movement and transferable skills to being a strong leader. • 91% of participants agreed that the workshop built their understanding of the principles and behaviours of good leadership. • 91% of the participants were confident that they could apply the skills and information they had learnt in the workshop to other environments i.e. school, sporting arena, work, etc. For these students the top 3 key highlights of the ceremony were: 1. Meeting and hearing the inspirational stories from the Olympians in attendance; 2. Celebrating their own achievements and being recognized for their contribution; and

13 3. Meeting and discussing their goals and achievements with like-minded students. As demonstrated in the following anecdotal feedback, students valued their participation in the Awards: “The best part about this experience was having the opportunity to learn and improve my knowledge about what the award is, and how the Olympic movement works.” “The honour of being selected” “Being rewarded for the many years of training for both school and outside school sports and feeling recognized for my love of sport and the encouragement of others to get involved in sport in particular athletics. Olympic Leadership Workshop We were pleased to offer the Leadership Workshop prior to the 2014 PdC Ceremony. This was offered as an additional professional development opportunity for our recipients. There were four components delivered as part of the Leadership Workshop: 1. Leadership- High Performance Teams: facilitated by AP Leadership Group 2. The Australian Olympic Team’s set of values (Attitude, Sportsmanship, Pride, Individual responsibility and Respect – A.S.P.I.R.E) and goal setting: facilitated by Natalie Cook 3. Body, Will and Mind connection (including experiential activities and discussion about the mental strength required for achieving success): facilitated by Lara Davenport, Guidelight Psychology and Outward Bound 4. The Olympic Panel Questions with a focus on Olympic challenges – “Youth and the future of the Olympic Movement in a digital world”: facilitated by Kim Cooper. Special thanks to: Catherine See and Fulton Smith – AP Leadership; Peter Doyle from Guidelight Psychology; and Greg Smith from Outward Bound Australia. Also, our sincere thanks to the Olympians that presented on the day: John Konrads Swimming 1956, 1960, 1964 Andrew Grant Volleyball 2012 Joshua Jefferis Gymnastics 2012 Sharon Sullivan Figure Skating 1976 Andrew McCabe Athletics 2012 Natalie Cook OAM Beach Volleyball 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012

14 Kim Cooper Softball 1996 Lara Davenport OAM Swimming 2008 Conclusion The success of the Education Commission can be attributed to consistent attention to detail and energy of the many volunteers that make up the Queensland Olympic Council Education Commission. To the Education Commission, we thank you for your time, knowledge and assistance. To Ian Jobling (the Olympic Guru) and the outstanding students from the Centre of Olympic Studies who engaged in the PdC Awards, and assisted the Queensland Olympic Council Education Commission throughout 2014 we are pleased to have worked alongside such driven and dedicated students that embody the joy found in the effort of the Olympic Movement. To Kim Cooper and Lisa Zoomers, your mentoring, attention to detail, guidance and strong relationships with our stakeholders contribute to the success of the Education Commission - thank you. The Education Commission are enthusiastic about what can be achieved in 2015, extending a warm welcome to Caroline Riot (Griffith University), Prudence Rolff (University of Qld) and Selina Lucy (University of Qld). May the peace of Olympia be with you,

15 2014 Olympians Club of Queensland Report The QLD Olympians Club has had some exciting news over the course of the year with the marriage of swimmers Melanie Schlanger to Chris Wright. We also had another swimmer Christian Sprenger marry his darling Amelia Evatt-Davey in December at Sanctuary Cove. We look forward to babies soon from both couples!!! Hint Hint! In October we held a 50th reunion for the 1964 Olympians which was a great success even with the clash of the reunion in Tokyo. We had Julian Rossi (Boxing), Billy Booth (Boxing), Bruce Richardson (Rowing), Graeme McCall (Rowing), Athol McQueen (Boxing), Arthur Denovan (ABC Broadcaster), Simon Newcomb (Rowing), Randal Hope (Boxing) and Fred Casey (Boxing) in attendance. The crew had a great time reliving old stories and looking at the memorabilia that the QLD Olympic Council put together for them. The stories included life in the village in Tokyo as well as stories of trips and their journeys together as Olympians. It was great to see them all catch up after such a long time and they were all looking forward to the next one.

Unfortunately we had to postpone our Christmas party due to low numbers but will reschedule it as a catch up for February 2015. We plan on having a great 2015 and looking forward to further connections.
