President Report
They say a year is a long time in politics well they should try Water Polo and what an eventful year it has been.
It began in the office, firstly, we lost our Development Officer, then our Junior Development Officer and finally our Executive Director. Fortunately, we had Gina who held the fort and then we made a spectacular recovery.
I have great pleasure in welcoming and introducing Mrs Jodie Watson (nee Taylor) as our new Executive Director and Director of Coaching. Mrs Watson comes with a water polo background, not only representing Australia as a player and manager but also coached Junior and National League teams. Mrs Watson came to us with wonderful credentials having held positions with Australian University Sport and Bicycle Queensland. Water Polo Queensland is very pleased to have her on board and when I say she was able to hit the ground running, I mean she was sprinting.
In the pool this past season, we have had outstanding results: Men • National League Barracudas and KFC finished in the top 6 – Barracudas 4 th , KFC 6 th . • NTC Challenge – Queensland – 3rd Bronze • Under 20 – 3rd Bronze • Under 20 – 2nd Silver • Under 18 – 2 teams entered finishing 4th and 6 th • Under 16 – Club Nationals, Barracudas – 2nd Silver, KFC – 14 th • Under 14 – East Coast Challenge, 2 teams entered finishing 2 nd Silver and 4th • Under 14 – Club Nationals, KFC – 2nd Silver, Barracudas – 7th • School Boys – 3rd Bronze
Women • National League Barracudas – 1st Gold (Three years in a row) - KFC – 6th • NTC Challenge – Queensland – 1st Gold • Under 20 – 2nd Silver • Under 20 – 1st Gold • Under 18 – 2 teams entered finishing 1 st Gold and 6 th • Under 16 – Club Nationals, Sunshine Coast – 4th , BGGS – 8th • Under 14 – East Coast Challenge, 2 teams entered finishing 1st Gold and 4th • Under 14 – Club Nationals, Rivercity – 4th , KFC – 9th , Stuartholme – 12 th , Barracudas – 15 th • School Girls – 2nd Silver
As you can imagine, with these excellent results many of our players were rewarded with selection in Australian National Teams.
This leads me to our development program. Our Emerging Athlete Program (EAP) for girls has been up and running for 3 years with notable success, the number of gold medals speak for themselves. We are about to implement the boys EAP and I have no doubt that it too will be just as successful. Whilst our player participation numbers are continually growing in the South East corner, our numbers are declining in North Queensland. Under the guidance of Mrs Watson, plans are already under way to rectify this situation.
Water Polo Queensland 2010/11 Annual Report Page 6
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the clubs, coaches, referees, volunteers and especially the players for such a successful season. These wonderful results wouldn’t be possible without you.
I would also like to thank the Executive Committee for their support and commitment. This season the Executive Committee faced some difficult situations and I am most proud that these were dealt with integrity, unity, professionalism and every decision made was for the betterment of the sport of water polo.
Sadly, one of our Executive Committee members are stepping down and on behalf of everyone on the Executive Committee, I would like to thank Helen Park for her time and dedication (driving down from the Sunshine Coast to attend every Board meeting), it has always been appreciated, and you will be missed.
In closing, I would like to remind you all that our Awards night is on 30 th September 2011. It’s a night for young and old and I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Executive Director Report
Having being appointed as the Executive Director/ Director of Coaching in late June 2011, after a two (2) month vacancy of the position, I can say that in many respects 2010/11 has been the most challenging Water Polo Queensland has experienced in years.
Due to many factors personnel changes within the office has seen a decrease of activity, possibility resulting in an overall eight percent (8%) decrease in participation; however the performance of teams in the pool were promising for the state and the potential for the coming years.
I would like to thank the Executive Committee in their support of managing the operations of the organisation after the resignation of two (2) Development Officers (Annabel Keogh & Daniel Almond) and the Executive Director (Keith Long), along with the completion of the special project funding position (Emma Jackson) within the last twelve months.
As a direct result of staff loses and decrease of activities, Water Polo Queensland saw a financial gain for the 2010/11 financial year of $80,952. This saving will assist in the grown and development of the sport in the next 12months to counterweigh the lack of activities seen in 2010/11.
We have successfully renewed our prime funding grant with the Queensland Government to span the next three years (2011-13) commencing at $117,000 + GST for 2011, to be indexed with CPI. This represents the same annual amount as our 2008-2010 grant. Without any increases we will need to increase our efficiency through cost savings and grow our revenue through non-grant related activities over the coming years to account for the growth and needs of the sport.
The year has seen a eight percent (8%) fall in registered members, however may be the result of the registration process not an actual decrease in people within the state playing. As a result a new online registration is being introduced for 2011/12. Further information regarding registration can be seen in the participation analysis.
We have continued to see success in the pool with thirteen (13) teams with podium finishes across club nationals, national championships and national league competitions. In the final staging of the U18 National Championships (changing to Club based nationals in 2012), Queensland women were victorious over NSW in a final minute effort by coach Nicola Johnson and her girls, creating history and capping off a successful season for Queensland, and a promising future for our athletes.
Communications by electronic means continues to be the enduring form of distributing information to all clubs, associations and members. Although it was recognised and noted in the previous years annual report that a new website was the key to keep up with membership requirements, due to staff changes this was not met. It is however anticipated a new website will be launched in October 2011, and will see an interactive dynamic site, linking with blogs, facebook, twitter, online forums and e-News to assist the membership needs and allow clear communication from QWPI.
On the development front Flippa Ball continued to be the main focus of QWPI. Thanks to major sponsor Collins Food Group (KFC), QWPI was able to see over 2500 children throughout
Water Polo Queensland 2010/11 Annual Report Page 8
the 12months, introducing them to the sport the modifies game. QWPI deployed over 15 casual development officers to delivery the Flippa Ball program across the state. The program will continue to grow and be more of a recruitment initiative linking with come and try days with the support of Collins Food Group for a further three (3) years.
As the sport continues to grow the next focus was on coach and official development, including accreditation. Through the direction of Australian Water Polo and the National Development Manager 2010/11 saw QWPI run several national coach accreditation scheme (NCAS) and national official accreditation scheme (NOAS) courses. Steadily the number of national accredited coaches and officials is increasing with further focus on development seminars being brought in for the next 12months, and returning to grass roots for coaching and official training to build Queensland to have the most qualified and up to date coaches and officials in the country.
Our high performance athletes throughout the year were once again supported through the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) Program’s. QWPI works closely with the QAS head coaches Simon Daley (Men’s Program) and Aleks Osadchuk (Women’s Program) to ensure opportunities for training, competition and education are available for our high performance athletes. The year has seen over fifteen senior Queensland athletes represent Australia at international events.
Though the commitment of an emerging athlete program(EAP) and support of the Queensland‘s elite pool of Representative and National League Team coaches (Simon Dayley, Aleks Osadchuk, Jack Lusic, Fabio Pavanello, Scott Schwickle, Nicola Johnson, Martin O’Brien, Rob Edwards, Duncan Greenbank, Daniel Marsden and Tony Hardy) 25 junior QWPI members represented Australia on International Tours and Junior World Championships. The QWPI Women’s EAP program as an underpinning QAS program has reaped rewards for the junior women within Queensland and is currently being established for the men.
The annual QWPI awards recognizing our high performance athlete and local level achievements were announced at the local national league derby between the KFC Queensland Breakers and the Brisbane Barracudas. The awards saw ten (10) awards presented, including Brisbane Barracudas taking out six awards, showing their dominance across the country in Water Polo.
QWPI could not have achieved success without the support and contribution of our clubs, coaches, referees, administrators, course presenters and volunteers, I thank them for their effortless support and continued promotion of the sport in the greater community.
The coming 12months will see new energy at QWPI, with improved programs and enhanced development which I look forward to delivering.

Participation Analysis
National registrations numbers in the past 12months have seen an overall decrease of 21%. Queensland is no different, with a eight percent (8%) decrease, mainly seen in regional areas.
Consistently over the past eight (8) years junior females (under 18) registrations are the premier membership type. 2010/11 remain the same as previous with 52% of all registrations within Queensland being junior females. Overall juniors dominate the Queensland registration with a 70% drop off rate from juniors to seniors, a figure which has been consistent over the past decade in Queensland. Comparison across the country shows Queensland’s dominance of junior numbers is similar to southern states. Junior registrations in Tasmania and South Australia are at 79%, 50% in Victoria, whereas New South Wales at 37% and Western Australia at 25% show a strong dominance in opportunities offered to seniors players. QWPI has identified retention as an area of importance for the sustainability and growth of the sport long term.
Water Polo Queensland 2010/11 Annual Report Page 10
As an Olympic Sport, a steady trend and increase is seen each Olympic cycle. After a consistent 5 year increase, 2010/11 has shown a decrease across all registration types. Unfortunately the figures do not lie, however it is believed that there are many more people playing Water Polo in Queensland, and perhaps doing it without insurance, governance, development and strategic support of QWPI. QWPI’s objective for the coming year is to modernize the registration process (online) and to better educate people within the community benefits of being a QWPI member and the services offered.
Water Polo Queensland 2010/11 Annual Report Page 11
Overall metropolitan registrations have remained steady, however a regional decrease for the second year running has been experienced. Previous new and established regional areas have faced environmental impacts in the past 12 months which has directly impacted on volunteers, governance, opportunity and pool access for the sport.
Water Polo Queensland 2010/11 Annual Report Page 12
It is anticipated with water polo played in primary and secondary schools, universities and other social competitions across the state the total number of people playing Water Polo (including registered members serviced by QWPI) is over 7000. 2010/11 Registrations
