The larger clubs of Vikings and Tritons have also had great results;  Highest number of international representation both in juniors and seniors;  Jets women made the finals for second year running;  Sensational 14&U Tournament hosted at SAALC;  Record number of State teams sent away with high levels of athletes and good potential shown;  Water Polo now played at 3 pools;  New name and image for Water Polo;  New web site for WPSA;  Online registration underway  Office opened at Marion with more staff to service Water Polo;  Improved relationships with key stakeholders;  Improved Governance – reporting and monitoring of grants and officers;  Greatly improved financial position

“The Great Challenges”  Becoming competitive in National Championships;  Increasing or at least holding our current membership levels;  Having all clubs viable for juniors and Seniors;  Taking Water Polo to new areas in metropolitan Adelaide and South Australia;  Improving our development opportunities and systems for our athletes;  Filling the SASI coaching position;  Maintaining our financial viability with new cost structures;  Keeping our focus on improvements that benefit our sport rather than politics;

In reviewing your progress I always find it useful to look behind you and see where you have come from. I have now completed 4 years as President of Water Polo South Australia (WPSA). So, I have a bit of a record that I can review.

In previous years I mentioned the significant challenges facing WPSA were the opening of South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre (SAALC) and our at the time tenuous financial position. It was pleasing to report last year good progress on these issues. Last year I also reported “the biggest challenge for SAWPI now is to put the best operating and governance structure in place”.

We can now report outstanding progress in many areas of operations of WPSA. Especially the key areas above that we have been targeting. In particular, during 2013 we have changed from a glass half empty association into one that has a glass hall full approach to its business.

Some highlights of 2012‐2013 are:

SAWPI Board: As the Section 9 shows the Board again has had very good attendance at meetings. The Board not only has participated well by attendance has also provided excellent judgement in this period of significant change for WPSA.

WATER POLO SOUTH AUSTRALIA Page 5

2012-2013 Annual Report Presented for the Annual General Meeting 26/08/2013

Finally in 2013 the redraft the Constitution has commenced and is substantially underway to reflect our current operating needs. To have our Constitution considered by the WPSA will require a Special General Meeting. Details will be distributed as the project nears completion. Details of this direction were contained in this report last year.

The Board has also implemented a more hands on approach to the monitoring of our performance and compliance with the requirements of our grants from the Office of Rec and Sport.

Management: In about May 2012 the WPSA Board reviewed the operating structure in consultation with key stakeholders. The outcome was the WPSA Board decided to change from a CEO position to an Operations Manager. The purpose of the change was to have a clearly defined set of requirements for the position and have the role directed at the day to day operations of our Association. These deliverables of the Operations Manager are monitored as part of the Board agenda.

In December 2012 Jon Harmer completed his role of CEO. Andrew Swift was appointed to the role of Operations Manager in January 2013. Further structure changes were made in June 2013 with Ben Arthur taking up the role of Operations Manager and Andrew Swift taking a role as Governance & Compliance Officer.

As part of this change in operations, WPSA finally occupied our office in SAALC which had been occupied by others in our absence. The move to SAALC was designed to ensure WPSA improved our presence at SAALC and took the opportunity within this “new” area of potential membership growth, which as stated in this report last year, as yet has not been grasped by WPSA.

Development: Again in 2012 and 2013 development programs offered by WPSA have continued to improve both in the number of squads and the administration of those squads.

Together with SASI, WPSA have established the High Performance Program (HPP). This program commenced in 2013 with Alex Murphy appointed to the role of head coach. An application by WPSA to the office of Recreation and Sport for a grant to support this squad has been successful.

These programs have now fully established development pathways from U12 through to the HPP which will further feed players into the SASI athlete program.

National Representation: This year our athletes achieved outstanding results with selection to National teams and squads. Players that were selected for Australian Teams included Isobel Bishop, Jess Martin, Chloe Barr, Victoria Risby, Belinda Symons, Chelsea Allen and William Dayman.

State Teams: This year WPSA sent a record number of teams to participate in National events. Last year we sent 8 teams this year we sent 9 teams, plus a composite team with Victoria. In addition Vikings nominated a team at the 14& U Championships. In total water polo players in South Australia were provided opportunities in 11 teams.

A very pleasing aspect of our state teams was the level of participation with a number of teams having a competitive selection process. However, due to availability, player levels were disappointing for the 18&U female age group.

During the last 12 months WPSA has continued to develop their coaching ranks. An improved number of coaches are available to WPSA to choose from.

WATER POLO SOUTH AUSTRALIA Page 6

2012-2013 Annual Report Presented for the Annual General Meeting 26/08/2013

Finance: Our focus on finance has continued through the 2013 financial year. WPSA are now getting into a financial position that will cope with the cash flow issues that arise when fielding multiple teams in championships.

WPSA will need to continue to build our financial reserves to ensure the association is financially capable of hosting major events and the development the association to ensure we provide the opportunities our players require.

The financial results for Financial Year 2013 contained in this report Revision A are draft financials. All other years shown are audited results.

National League: 2013 consolidated our move to SAALC and saw a number of players return. Again the most positive aspect for the Jets was the success of the women’s team in making the finals for the second consecutive year. In 2013 the women confirmed a finals position earlier than in 2012. For the Men it was another year rebuilding. Both teams have benefited from the professional approach of Eddie Denis. John Thompson took over as coach for the men in the second half of the season.

National 14 & Under Championships: Over Easter 2013 WPSA delivered an outstanding tournament for the 20 & Under National Championships. This tournament not only showcased our tremendous new aquatic centre but also showed how well WPSA could organise such a large event.

The success was largely due to an outstanding commitment by Operations Manager Andrew Swift, Tournament Director Alex Murphy and a fantastic group of parent volunteers.

SAALC, AAC, St Peters: In this report last year I stated. “In addition to Marion, the SAWPI Board is committed to ensure Water Polo remains strong at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre and St Peters”. Our office move to SAALC is making up for our slower than desirable take up of the opportunities around Marion. The WPSA is committed to all centres capable of hosting Water Polo. It is important that this commitment is understood and correctly communicated to members.

The demonstration of this commitment is our extensive operations at all these centres.

Membership: In this report we can say the big success is our membership levels. The truly pleasing aspect is that all membership categories have benefited from a significant boost. Our membership levels of 313 are the highest for at least 15 years. This represents a 60% increase on the disappointing levels of last year.

In closing, I would like to thank all people who have assisted SAWPI throughout the year including Head Coach Eddie Denis, Administration Officer Michele Corbett, our development coaches, state team coaches, referees, team managers and committee members.

Importantly I would like to thanks our former CEO Jon Harmer for the role he fulfilled for several years as WPSA moved from a volunteer based organisation to an employee driven one. As we move into our new era of management thanks must also go to our current manager Ben Arthur and Andrew Swift and all members of the WPSA Board. There have been some very dedicated efforts by people to assist the association.

3 Report on Operations

3.1 Operation Manager’s Report Season 2012‐2013 has seen several positive changes to Water Polo in South Australia. These include the launch of the Association’s new name, Water Polo South Australia; the launch of a new website to serve members better; an increased relationship with Rec & Sport and an increase in funding through successful awarding of new funding through the High Performance Program; setting up an office at the South Australian Aquatic & Leisure Centre (SAALC) which is helping us forge strong links with the Centre; and the successful delivery of the 14&Under National Club Championships at SAALC.

Many positive steps forward have been taken over the past six months and the support of many volunteers has enabled this to occur successfully. I would like to thank all the volunteers that worked tirelessly throughout the 14&Under National Club Championships at SAALC. The event received fantastic feedback from , SAALC management, the teams, visitors and spectators. Your work did not go unrecognised. Thank you.

The sporting industry has become very competitive, trying to attract as many new people and retain their current members to their sport. Water Polo SA has been fortunate enough to have received continued funding in 2012‐2013 from Rec & Sport and this has enabled the association to put in plans that will focus on the development of the sport. This area will need to be a major focus area in 2013‐2014 so we can provide our local clubs new members and therefore better competitions.

Steps have been put in place to help the association efficiently deal with the workload for this focus in 2013‐ 2014. I am pleased to provide the amended structure to Water Polo SA which will create a more efficient Association.

All staff appointments were made after consultation with industry contacts as well as applications for the Operations Manager position within the past 6 months. Alex Murphy, Development Officer has recently been appointed as temporary coach of the SASI Water Polo program and it was SASI’s preference to incorporate Alex into roles in SA. Ben Arthur, Operations Officer joins us from a strong development and operations background in several sporting Associations including his recent posting at SACA and has achieved strong club development results while at the Australian Sports Commission.

For myself coming in new to Water Polo, it has been fantastic seeing the community oriented values that this sport holds in SA, the support that all club members, Board members especially Mark Dayman,

WATER POLO SOUTH AUSTRALIA Page 8

2012-2013 Annual Report Presented for the Annual General Meeting 26/08/2013

President have provided me has been enormous and has in turn enabled me to support the sport in SA as best I can. As an association, we look forward to serving our clubs, members and community well into the future.

Andrew Swift Operations Manager

3.2 Overview of changes and work in progress Change of name As part of the transition from South Australian Water Polo to Water Polo South Australia, the sport’s governing body completed a national rebranding project in early 2013. This project resulted in the development of a new WPSA logo.

The shift has resulted from recommendations made by the Australian Sports Commission and the desire of WPAL to align with the approach taken by other national sporting organisations.

WPAL enlisted the services of Southern Design, a reputable design agency, to establish logo and brand concepts. A number of unique designs were produced with the brief focusing on the following key visual elements:  The water polo ball  Water and waves  Movement and motion

The colours were also an important part of the design process with the proposed design aiming to stay true to Water Polo South Australia’s heritage whilst representing the WPSA and WPA brand as strong, contemporary and world class.

The logo evolved from the concept of the water polo ball, with the circular design clearly representing a visual element along with the other desired elements of water and movement. However, rather than simply incorporating the traditional water polo ball, the design presents these visual elements in a contemporary fashion. The circular design also represents the evolution of the sport, reflecting WPAL’s move into a new chapter and demonstrates the desired unified approach with the circle encompassing all stakeholders – state associations, clubs, supporters, everyone associated with . The break in the circle signifies a hand holding the water polo ball, portraying the message that WPAL will nurture and develop the sport at all levels, and that the future of the sport is in safe hands.

Constitution Water Polo SA will be updating their policies and procedures throughout the 2013‐2014 season. An important document that will be updated shortly is WPSA’s constitution. A draft copy of the constitution will be presented for consultation to club committees in late 2013. The new constitution will align with Water Polo Australia and Rec & Sport SA’s constitution which will enable partnerships to develop with these key stakeholders through same work projects.

WATER POLO SOUTH AUSTRALIA Page 9

3.3 Grants Overview

Water Polo SA has continued to receive funding from Rec & Sport, receiving $69,500.00 from the Office of Recreation and Sport throughout 2012‐2013. The grants that were awarded to Water Polo SA in 2012‐2013 are listed below.

Sport and Recreation Sustainability Used for day to day operations of the $27,500 (plus GST) Program Grant organisation Sport and Recreation Development Flippa Ball to Junior Water Polo Program' $40,000 (plus GST) and Inclusion Program Grant is the title and funding can be used to employ Development Officers to deliver Flipper Ball and other development programs, including visiting school. 2012‐2013 Contingency Funding To assist with the costs associated with $2,000 (Plus GST) Program hosting the 2013 Australian 14&U Championships

Water Polo SA will receive new funding of both the Sustainability Program Grant and the Development and Inclusion Program Grant for 2013‐2014. Additionally, Water Polo SA has been awarded a grant commencing 2013‐2014 for a total of $25,000p.a., over the next two years to support a new High Performance Program.

New mechanisms have been put in place for close control of all grants at Board level and also to allow accurate recording and reporting of information for Rec & Sport. There are many obligations to meet throughout the grant funding cycle for each Rec & Sport grant and with the administration processes now set in place WPSA is in a strong position.

3.4 Website In early 2013 WPSA was excited to launch a new website that allowed members and the general public access to reliable, updated and clear information regarding WPSA matters. WPSA engaged Ryan Jones, a website developer as part of a sponsorship arrangement to re‐design and create a more functional website. The main reason for implementing this project was so that members and the general public could access all their desired information in one place. Since the implementation of the new website, WPSA has received very positive feedback which has confirmed to WPSA the importance of keeping the website updated. Along with page updates, the regular Facebook updates will also keep members up to date with the latest Water Polo news.

3.5 Rec & Sport 360 Survey The Office for Recreation and Sport (ORS) administers the Sport and Recreation Sustainability Program (SRSP). The purpose of this grant is to support Water Polo SA to provide leadership, policies and services relevant to our activity. The SRSP is linked to membership and turnover.

WATER POLO SOUTH AUSTRALIA Page 10

2012-2013 Annual Report Presented for the Annual General Meeting 26/08/2013

The 360 degree survey was commissioned by ORS to obtain feedback from Water Polo SA’s membership and stakeholders to:  Understand members’ and stakeholders’: o Experiences and relationships with Water Polo SA o Aspirations for the future of Water Polo SA  Measure Water Polo SA’s performance in meeting member and stakeholder needs and expectations  Provide indications for how Water Polo SA can better meet the needs and expectations

It is pleasing to note that the performance of Water Polo SA is comparable to that of other sports of a similar membership base and turnover. Through this survey, the Water Polo’s membership states that some of the positives of the organisation are membership fees being appropriate for the services received, that water polo is a welcoming community, and that clubs are provided support when needed, and are also provided with the opportunity to have input into the development of the sport.

Some of the other key results that will shape Water Polo SA’s direction moving forward include: Leadership  Continuing to provide a clear direction for the sport in the future  Raising the profile through traditional and social media  Ensuring the management of finance and governance remains a priority

Relationship and Communication  Continuing to deliver on key targets  Providing information for volunteers to fulfil their roles

Services and Support  Continuing to manage our competitions in a professional manner  Offering a range of programs for all ages and ability levels to become involved

Policies  Ensure key policies are in place for all members to refer to

An important point to note here was our low response rate. Part will be due to our poor database but most is due to members not completing the survey.

3.6 Development 12 & Under and 14 & Under Mixed Competition The Sunday competition continues to grow from its outstanding success in the 2011/12 period, with increased numbers and participation across all ages and gender groups, and ever increasing families and supporters in the stands. It has maintained its strength and growth due to the continued hard work, experience and passion from all the 4 clubs, who have worked cooperatively and diligently together. It was recognized by all clubs the importance of ongoing strategic planning needs, required to be in place to maintain this growth and capitalise on the popularity of the Sunday competition.

Consequently a working group was established with membership of 2 to 3 representatives from each 4 clubs, who undertook a shared responsibility to ensure any issues were always dealt with in a timely and

WATER POLO SOUTH AUSTRALIA Page 11

2012-2013 Annual Report Presented for the Annual General Meeting 26/08/2013

positive fashion. It was agreed to consult membership about their views, via a written survey conducted across all players and families, with 55 received respondents from all clubs.

There was overwhelming support to maintain the current competition as it was currently, with no changes to venue or format, with participants strongly voicing their positive support to the current structure and organization.

Respondents particularly liked the day of the competition (Sunday) and also the timing (end of the day). They enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, the location of the competition (resulting in minimal travel), and the small venue that feels safe and secure for families and younger children, easy parking, and no admission fees. In summary the competition was very highly regarded, highlighting the importance of a friendly, family and social atmosphere.

The identified areas of improvement included working towards a single gender competition, seen as especially important for the 14 and under age group. And acknowledgement that referees require uniformity, and improved mentoring, so they can develop the skill set and ability to be consistent across games.

Water Polo SA acknowledges the critical importance of this competition as it provides a direct entry level for interested beginners to enter the sport and supports the flow on of young girls and boys to the 14 & under grade entry point of National competition representing South Australia.

Even though there is not 100% consensus on all matters, and there are identified areas for improvement, we believe there is potential to keep working together as a group in conjunction with Water Polo SA to further develop & promote these competitions to an even more successful level.

Finally we would like to thank all the clubs for their ongoing support and commitment, and also the many parents and friends who assisted in voluntarily capacities at the competitions: without their support the competition would not be able to be sustained and operational.

Junior Development Junior Development is important to the growth of our clubs and our participants. The last twelve months has seen many of those who once participated in state squad trainings, being selected into Australian squads. This year we can see similar and exciting progress as our participants are involved in selections and enjoy success at National Championships. It is exciting to see the wonderful talent emerging from within our Juniors.

The last six months has seen a change in format. Sessions times were created to build two Northern and two Southern sessions enabling members to register and nominate the number of weekly sessions they wish to attend. This helped to accommodate our more experienced players from SASI and Jets NL to take on roles of coaching, giving them an opportunity to form relationships with our younger members inspiring them to continue with water polo. It was understood that session times at times may impact club sessions, however as a state we have benefited from this.

To encourage coaches in their roles during 2012, an honorary donation was made to them at the end of each term. This incentive has been continued into 2013, with new and experienced people from a number of clubs offering to step forward in these roles. Coaches have been provided with guidance through the

WATER POLO SOUTH AUSTRALIA Page 12

2012-2013 Annual Report Presented for the Annual General Meeting 26/08/2013

development of a Hobbyist Coaching Pack and a general overview of a State Squad Development Program. This enables them to provide a structured format in planning sessions and squad goals.

During the last four months participant numbers are continuing to grow steadily, with many members being retained once Nationals are completed, supporting our desire to run State Squads over 11 months. This leads into our desire to implement coach continuity, with two program coach leader, one for girls and one for boys, being ably supported by others. We have seen steady success with the 14&U boys this year reinforcing the importance of maintaining a regular coach within a year level. The sourcing of coaches and the participant movement between squads will occur at the commencement of Term 4, in line with the changeover between Winter and Summer Competitions and 16&U Nationals, to prepare for 2014 age events.

We acknowledge Jon Harmer for his leadership of squads and development for a number of years, guiding us through 2012, and for his continued support. Many thanks to Shaun Baker, Dan Parish and Lachie Cameron for coaching during 2012. To Tony Hall and our coaches Emy van Dujin, John Flynn, Jodie Adams and Belinda Symons, who have been supported by Dan Hall, Jon Harmer, Caitlin Shem and Tom Dayman, a huge thank you for your support and dedication to our youth as we continue to grow in 2014.

3.7 High Performance Program During 2012 the SAWPI Board agreed to partner with SASI to establish a High Performance Partnership Program. The proposal was put forward by Eddie Denis. The following three slides are an extract from that presentation. Alex Murphy was appointed Head Coach of the program.

At the end of June 2013 the High Performance Pathways program began with a two week open invitation to all State players to try out for the program. The trials were well attended with over twenty players trialling. From this group, seven girls and ten boys were selected for the new High Performance Pathways squad. The program will officially start at the beginning of July. The program will consist of four pool and three gym sessions, two of which are joint sessions with the South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) program. It is envisaged that this will assist to bridge the gap between state level and SASI for our athletes. The program has been supported by the Office for Recreation and Sport, and I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank them for their ongoing commitment. Without their support, this program would not be possible.

Alex Murphy Development Officer

3.8 SASI

The end of this year has seen a big change in the SASI program with Head coach Eddie Denise leaving the program in order to take a new job as the Australian Women's Assistant coach. Over the past 10 years Eddie has done a fantastic job of running the SASI program. Multiple players have gained National selections while Eddie was coaching the program, Including 6 athletes this year who have been selected to tour and compete in major international events for Australia. The SASI coaching role has been taken over Alex Murphy who is acting as a interim coach for the program with a view to appointing a full time coach for the program in the next couple of months. SASI has also taken on a joint venture with WPSA to provide a High Performance Pathways program, this will act as a bridge between club/state water polo and the elite training environment of the SASI program.

3.9 Major Events – 14&Under National Club Championships In April 2013, Water Polo South Australia hosted the 14&Under National Club Championships at the South Australian Aquatic & Leisure Centre. This event was a great success.

General Comments  Successfully received a grant of $2,000 from Rec & Sport for assistance to venue hire.  Adelaide Fresh Fruiterers in Prospect donated food baskets for the raffle each day.  Entry/accreditation wrist bands were enjoyed amongst the kids and created an easy accreditation process rather than the lanyards.  Some great feedback came through to us about the event. 4 Finance Report

4.1 Overview The financial position for WPSA continues to recover. However, we still need another 2 years to place ourselves in a position where the association has more control of its future. Even with our improved results for the last 2 years cash flow has been an issue at time. Our chart of accounts has continued to develop but further work is required. Our post and administration will be moved to the Marion office that will give more consistency of the assignment of income and expenses to the correct codes. Also as part of our finance improvements, the WPSA office and Finance Director will need to receive a full journal listing each month. This will also satisfy questions at Board meetings.

4.2 Government Grant Water Polo SA has continued to receive funding from Rec & Sport, receiving $69,500.00 from the Office of Recreation and Sport throughout 2012‐2013.

4.3 Membership Revenue Membership revenue has increased. However, it should be realised our capitation and insurance has been graded on last years numbers. So, our expenses do not reflect the ultimate cost of this item. This cost will flow through into Financial Year 2014.

2012-2013 Annual Report Presented for the Annual General Meeting 26/08/2013

6.2 National League ‐ Pre‐Season Fitness Development: Both men’s and women’s squad members had clear fitness targets specified for the 2013 Pre‐season. Over the main fitness training block between October and end of November, all athletes showed excellent improvement and 70% of the boys squad had reached the required level of fitness while 60% of the women’s squad had reached their fitness targets.

Pre‐Season Training Camp: The Men’s and Women’s National League Squads travelled to to train against the UNSW Men’s and Women’s National League Teams. This experience was better for the men than the women seeing as the UNSW Men are an experienced team that finished top 5 in the 2013 season while the UNSW Women are a young side who finished 10th. There were some limitations on our training space and times due to a number of other NSW State teams doing their final preparations for the U20 Nationals, but the camp was good in getting a better feel for how our older Jets athletes were going and especially how some of our younger athletes would fit‐in to our team structures. I believe this exercise was a good one in terms of match practice and team bonding prior to the start of the NL season. Its proximity to the start of the U20 Nationals helped relieve some extra costs for our U20 athletes, though in future years with the U20 Nationals being held in June the timing of such a camp will need to be revisited.

Competition Season The Women’s season started in see‐saw fashion. We were confident against our first opponent UNSW, the team we had had our pre‐season camp against, but both games were closely fought. We started with a win but in the second game the UNSW goalie had a blinder which forced us to a penalty shoot‐out which we lost. Our next games against UWA saw the USA Olympian Kami Craig score multiple goals to force Game 1 into a penalty shoot‐out but the Jets returned for game two with a strong 3 goal win. Two strong performances versus Drummoyne at home led us to our first Road trip of the season with a 4 – 2 record.

Our Road trip to Newcastle saw us post two convincing wins in bad weather against a team who we have struggled against in the past. We then travelled to Sydney to play Balmain and against a weakened Balmain outfit forced a good 4 goal win in game 1. In our last game of the Road Trip, Balmain regained some experienced players and they made better use of their chances to win by 3. This was a disappointing result for us, but was still the first time a Jets women’s side had come away from a Road Trip with 3 wins. Our season record was now 7 – 3.

The Road Trip to Newcastle and Sydney seemed to have crystallised our Jets defence, and our two next home games against Cronulla, last season’s Gold medallists, saw us keep a team them to 10 goals over two games. Our Blocking in these two games was excellent. We then had a mini break before playing tough games versus Victoria and Sydney Uni, the Sydney Uni series including another heart‐breaking penalty loss. We split both of these series. Our record was now 11 – 5.

Our second road‐trip to was daunting. We were up against the two top teams in the competition and since we had split a number of Series already in the season, we needed wins to secure our spot in the Finals. All four games of this Road trip were entertaining with 3 of the games being decided in the last minutes of the 4th quarter or via penalty’s. Game one versus the Breakers saw the Jets fight back to score in the last 20 seconds of the game forcing the game into a penalty shoot‐out. Finally our luck held in the shoot‐ out and we had a vital win.

Our second game of the Road Trip was a super physical match‐up versus the Barracudas that saw the Jets leading 5‐3 at 3 quarter time only to be put under massive pressure in the final term which saw no score for the Jets but 3 goals and the win for the Barracudas.

2012-2013 Annual Report Presented for the Annual General Meeting 26/08/2013

Our third game of the Trip was against the Breakers again and as in the first game it came down to the last quarter where the Breakers gained the lead before the Jets came home strongly to snatch the win. This was a great result for the Jets and sealed a place in the Finals series for 2013. The last game of the weekend was against the Barracudas with only 15 hours between the end of the Saturday night game and the start of the Sunday morning game. This is almost an impossible ask for anyone doing the Brisbane Road Trip, and for the Jets it proved to be too great an ask losing by 5 goals. Our record was now 13 – 7.

Our last two games of the season did not hold any pressure for either team in terms of Finals berths but did potentially affect both teams in terms of placing’s for the Finals. The Jets held the lead versus the under‐ strength Marlins for the majority of game one but they fought back in the last quarter to force a penalty shoot‐out in which the Marlins goalie was superb giving them the win. Game two was a tough defensive game, which saw the deciding goal being the only score to Fremantle in the last quarter.

Our final win‐loss record for Season 2013 was 13 – 9.

Final Series The preparation for the Jets Women’s’ second appearance at the National League Finals was a good one. We arrived in Sydney 3 days early and had time to acclimatize to the pool and prepare our heads and hearts for the games ahead.

Game one was against Victoria who we had split our series against mid‐season. The game was tough as we expected with both teams relying on their experienced players to make the plays. The Jets fought back in the last quarter to cover a 2 goal margin and take the game to a penalty shoot‐out. Finally our many experiences with penalty shoot‐outs worked in our favour and in the second round of penalty shots the game concluded in favour of the Jets.

Game two was against a full strength Fremantle. The Jets played excellent team defence in the first quarter and jumped‐out to a 2 goal lead. The experienced Fremantle players then came to the fore bringing Fremantle to a 1 goal lead at 3 quarter time. In the final period Fremantle took charge and made the best of two defensive errors. The Jest couldn’t find the extra goals needed and finally lost by two. The Team was still confident on reaching the Top 4 play‐offs based on the results from the previous day but the result of the final game on Day 2 did not go as planned and the Jets were knocked out of the Top 4.

The Final Game of the Final series, which was for 5th spot, was again against Victoria. The most experienced player in the Victorian team, Olympian Rowie Webster, took control of the game from the beginning and Victoria outscored the Jets in every quarter bar the last. The Jets had lost some of their fight due to the disappointment of missing‐out on the Top 4 and were unable to rally enough to gain the win.

One very noticeable thing at the National League Finals this year was the reliance of other teams on their Senior International players. The London Olympians particularly stood‐out for their teams at the Finals this year.

As I have mentioned in previous years, we are behind the other teams in terms of International Senior experience and therefore our result in the Finals this year was again a credit to the athletes and support staff who work so hard to make the Jets team successful.

Season Thank you Athletes: Nicole Redder chose to return to the Jets again this year and played a very important part in making the team successful this year.

Chelsea Beck joined the Jets for the first time and through she didn’t see too much pool time was a very supportive and influential member of the Team.

Sarah Forrest returned to the Jets after a 2‐year absence and worked hard through the season to gain the fitness she needed to be a member of the team that went to the Finals. Hopefully Sarah can continue her progress and become a vital member of the Jets team in future years.

All the athletes who returned with the goal of finishing in the Final 4 in 2013. Every member of the Team worked hard to contribute to the success of the Team. It wasn’t all smooth sailing, but as a Team we showed great purpose and belief in the way we worked through the season. I believe we prepared really well for the Finals series and we did everything we could to make that Top 4 but our chance was taken from us via an unexpected upset that was out of our control.

Staff From SASI: Tim Rawlins and British Ben who filmed and coded our home games. Geoff Boylan‐Marsland who was closely involved as Team Psych this season. Carolyn Symons as Team Manager. Many thanks Carolyn for your great contribution this year. John Thompson for taking the reins of the Jets Men part way through the season. Tony Hall for agreeing to be the Jets home referee this season. A particularly thankless task, which Tony worked very hard at doing well. The senior athletes who helped keep the Team together when things got tough and helped keep processes smooth especially on Road Trips.

Sponsors: To all our sponsors who are all now long‐term sponsors. Thank you for your continued support.

NL Committee: A great deal of thanks goes to Mark Dayman and Graham Barr who assisted me in numerous ways in making the season run smoothly. Thank you for your support and great deal of effort throughout the pre‐season and season proper.

Volunteers: Our volunteer’s work selflessly to make our Home games a smoothly run event. Even though the ‘Clock gremlins’ started taking hold this season, many thanks to everyone who gave of their time to make our Home games possible.

SAWPI Board: The on‐going support of the SAWPI board in supporting the presence of both a men’s and women’s Jets sides each year cannot be underestimated. These Teams are such an important part of the development pathway for South Australian athletes but they are also a drain on the resources of a small organization like SAWPI.

Long Term Thank You After 12 years of NL coaching I am concluding my time with the Adelaide Jets to try‐my‐hand on the International stage with the Senior and Junior Australian Women’s Teams. I would like to express how grateful I am to SAWPI and SASI for giving me the opportunity to coach the Jets National League teams over so many years. The experience I have gained with these Teams has given me the skills and passion for coaching which I am sure will hold me in good stead for all my future coaching endeavours.

At the end of such a long period there are many people to thank for their support and assistance at a personal and team level.

Firstly I would like to acknowledge the assistance of Jon Harmer who for many of my years as National League coach was the life‐blood of the Jets National League efforts being Manager, Coach, Fundraiser, NL Committee leader, Volunteer roster organizer, Game announcer and everything between. Jon was also a great personal supporter of mine from the day I set foot as a coach in South Australia so I am indebted to him for my opportunities with SASI and SAWPI.

I would also like to acknowledge Lyn and David Martin who were SAWPI Board members at the time of my starting in South Australia, Both David and Lyn offered me sound council and support in my early years of coaching.

To the many parents and family members who volunteered for duties at National League home games year after year. Without you our games wouldn’t happen. Rather than name many individuals I will summarise with family names: Martin, Harmer, Portlock, Sterk, Green, Callahan, Dearman, Barr, Dayman, Wedding, Symons, Bishop, Sangster.

Finally to those athletes who have enjoyed competing for the Jets for many of the years I coached and in the process helped provide much needed continuity to the Jets National League programs. Men: Nathan Portlock, Rafael Sterk, Matt Martin, Nick Martin, Patrick Harmer, Tim Martin, Anthony Martin, Luca Vezzosi and Chris Martin who have all played 8 or more seasons with the Jets. Women: Victoria Risby, Lisa Callahan, Sophie Ricketts, Jessica Martin and Isobel Bishop who have all played 7 or more years with the Jets.

7 Membership Statistics 2012‐2013

During 2012‐13 significant progress has been made in the area of Development with the result being a significant increase in junior members compared to the previous 2011‐2012 season.

Increasingly, recruitment has been assisted by formalising links between clubs and schools in their geographical zone. All clubs have been a vital partner in this approach; Adelaide Tritons Club, Henley Sharks Club, Adelaide Vikings Club and Eastern Saints Club. Whilst such links have been growing in most recent years the additional links established with primary schools via the SAWPI 12 & Under initiative has broadened this link. The consolidation of the Sunday afternoon 12 & Under Competition has allowed a safe and fun way for new members to Water Polo to get involved.
