It also uses the Cepheus Engine SRD by Jason “Flynn” Kemp and Samardan Press. These rules are intended to allow Referees and players to emulate their favorite Fantasy tropes from literature and visual media. The Fantasy genre has diversified greatly from their origins as folklore and mythological tales. While it most often invokes images of the worlds created by J.R.R. Tolkien, Fritz Leiber, L. Sprague de Camp and Fletcher Pratt, among many others, it encompasses a wide variety of flavors and subgenres, from High, or Epic Fantasy to Grimdark. Of Realms Unbounded doesn’t favor one style of fantasy over any other, and in fact is designed to allow the Referee to construct the sort of world (s)he envisions for the individual campaign, rather than force an external view. It’s assumed the reader is familiar with role-playing games (RPGs) and how they work. The Center To succeed at a task, throw Difficulty Modifiers Haste/Caution Modifiers 2D6, adding any appropriate Simple +6 Instant –4 Die Modifiers (DMs.) If the Easy +4 1 second –2 result is for 8 or more (8+), Routine +2 6 seconds 0 you succeed. [Skill] or [Char] Average 0 1 minute +2 [X]+ simply means “throw Difficult –2 1 hour +4 2D6, add the indicated skill Very Difficult –4 1 day or more +6 level or Characteristic Formidable –6 Modifier (see below), and if the result is the target number or better, it’s a success. (i.e., Recon 8+, STR 10+). The Referee may impose a Difficulty Modifier to the throw, based on the circumstances at the time. The above table shows typical difficulty modifiers. Haste/Caution Modifiers: Determine the base time an action takes and then adjust on the above scale. Note that 6 seconds equals one combat round. Example: To try and draw a sword instantaneously instead of one second imposes Sampleanother –4 DM to the task throw. file Multitasking: To do two or more things at once, like firing a crossbow while also riding a running horse: –2 per action. Opposed Tasks: If two characters are opposing each other directly in a task, then whoever makes their throw by more wins. Of Realms Unbounded | 1 Aiding Another: Each person aiding the main person performing a task adds +1 to the effort if they make their task throw. Weights and measures are given in metric units for ease of use with the SRD rules. The base Tech Level is assumed to be 1-2 but see differences below. Doughty Adventurers Throw 2D6 for the following: Strength (STR): physical strength, Characteristic fitness and forcefulness; Dexterity (DEX): physical co- Modifiers ordination, agility, and reflexes; Endurance (END): stamina, 1 –3 determination and sustaining damage; Intelligence (INT): 2 –2 Intellect and quickness of mind; Education (EDU): a measure 3-5 –1 of learning and experience; Social Standing (SOC): one’s 6-8 0 place in society and standing in the community. Maximum 9-11 +1 score for a human is 15. Stats also govern Characteristic 12-14 +2 Modifiers (CharMods; see accompanying table.) 15 +3 Players should choose a race (see Races below) as early in the generation process as possible, to factor in any racial characteristic modifiers and inborn skills. Career Generation The following career generation process is designed for human characters. See the entries under Races below for adjustments for members of other races. Background: The hero is eligible for an automatic Wilds City skill level based on his or her background and Animals Drive upbringing. Decide whether (s)he was born and Navigation Steward raised in the wilds or the city, and choose one skill in Recon Streetwise the appropriate category: Survival Trade Apprenticeship: Each hero begins his or her career at age 10 with an Apprenticeship. This is just like Enlistment in other 2D6 worlds. Throw to qualify for the career on the desired table below; the Characteristic Modifier for the stat may be used as a positive Die Modifier (DM.) If successful, the hero has been apprenticed to an expert in that profession, gains +1 EDU and may throw for a skill on either the Personal Development or the Service Skill table — other tables aren’t available to the hero until the second SampleSeason (term of service equaling four years) and thereafter. Thefile PC also can’t gain Recognition or Advancement during the first Season. If the Apprenticeship throw is unsuccessful, the hero ages one year (to 11) and must throw 1D6 to be drafted into one of the careers below. Note that (s)he may be drafted into the very career (s)he was previously rejected from. 2 | Of Realms Unbounded .

While many helpful resources on teaching a particular genre or teaching particular texts within a genre exist, college teachers who have not previously taught science fiction, fantasy, or horror will benefit from a broader pedagogical overview of speculative fiction, and that is what this resource provides. Teachers who have previously taught speculative fiction may also benefit from the selection of alternative texts presented here.     1 DEFINING FANTASY by Steven S. Long This article is my take on what makes a story Fantasy, the major elements that tend to appear in Fantasy, and perhaps most importantly what the different subgenres of Fantasy are (and what distinguishes them). I’ve adapted it from Chapter One of my book Fantasy Hero, available from Hero Games at www.herogames.com, by eliminating or changing most (but not all) references to gaming and gamers. My insights on Fantasy may not be new or revelatory, but hopefully they at least establish a common ground for discussion. I often find that when people talk about Fantasy they run into trouble right away because they don’t define their terms. A person will use the term “Swords and Sorcery” or “Epic Fantasy” without explaining what he means by that. Since other people may interpret those terms differently, this leads to confusion on the part of the reader, misunderstandings, and all sorts of other frustrating nonsense. So I’m going to define my terms right off the bat. When I say a story is a Swords and Sorcery story, you can be sure that it falls within the general definitions and tropes discussed below. The same goes for Epic Fantasy or any other type of Fantasy tale. Please note that my goal here isn’t necessarily to persuade anyone to agree with me — I hope you will, but that’s not the point. What I call “Epic Fantasy” you may refer to as “Heroic Fantasy” or “Quest Fantasy” or “High Fantasy.” I don’t really care.

Abstract Unlike secondary world fantasy, such as that of J.R.R. Tolkien, what I call syncretic fantasy is typically set in a world that overlaps significantly with the contemporary "real" or cognitive majoritarian world in which we (i.e. most North Americans) profess to live our lives. In terms of popular publication, this subgenre has been recognized by fantasy publishers, readers, and critics since (at least) the mid 1980s, with Charles De Lint's bestselling Moonheart (1984) and subsequent "urban fantasies" standing as paradigmatic examples of the type. Where secondary world fantasy constructs its alternative worlds in relative isolation from conventional understandings of "reality," syncretic fantasy posits alternative realities that coexist, interpenetrate, and interact with the everyday real.

    —The Cover On May 5, 1961, I was afforded the incredible luxury of either feigning or being sick. I was allowed to stay home from school. I was a rocket nut. If that date is not familiar to you, it has been burned into my mind. The day Alan Shepard riding a Mercury-Redstone rocket became the first American into space. It was pretty much an elevator trip, no orbit, just a quick trip 116 miles up and dip back into the ocean. I was with him all the way. I cheered when he was recovered. ‘Take that Gagarin,’ I thought. On February 2, 1962, John Glenn made orbit three times in Friendship 7 without my participation. On January 27, 1967, on Launch Pad 34 at Cape Kennedy Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee were asphyxiated when the Command Module interior caught fire. I wasn’t paying nearly as much attention to the space program when the tragedy occurred. July 20, 1969, I arrived with my new wife on a hilly street in Berkeley California. Trudged up the steps to my friend’s apartment, sat down on the floor in the room crowded with people gathered from the apartment complex, and landed on the moon. Exciting as that day was I feel NASA did all they could do to make the space program seem like a drag. Even the slow pace of the movie “Destination Moon” was a thrill ride in comparison. Lately, I am feeling that glimmer again. We may make it back to the Moon. We may travel to Mars.

MARTIN Mat Hardy Deakin University, Australia George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels (and their television adaption, Game of Thrones ) have become arguably the most well known fantasy epic of the last decade. However, the world of A Song of Ice and Fire conforms to many of the same Orientalist tropes that have dominated Western literature since the popularisation of the 'Arabian fantasy' in the 18 th and 19 th centuries and its subsequent perpetuation in film and television. Derivative imaginings of the real world Middle East are commonly reflected in non-Earthly fantasy worlds and Martin's work incorporates this standard vision of the Eastern Other. Owing to its popularity, the A Song of Ice and Fire series represents a significant reinforcement of Orientalist stereotypes and proves that fantasy locations have significant power to cement these ideas in the popular imagination. Moreover, the negative portyal of the East in these works supports Said's argument that the Orient is an invention of the West, and that our depiction of the Other is a means of framing our own cultural superiority.
