In this special year, join us for an exciting range of events and activities to remember and honour QSO’s proud history. We want to especially thank our audiences who have been with us throughout this journey. There will be opportunities for you to share your memories of QSO, for past supporters to reconnect with us, and for new audiences to discover the cultural icon that is QSO, our great state orchestra. To open QSO’s 2017 performance season, and mark the commencement of our celebrations, QSO performs Wagner’s Tannhäuser Overture on Saturday 18 February under the baton of QSO Music Director Alondra de la Parra. This overture was the first work performed at the QSO’s inaugural concert in 1947. qso.com.au/70 2 qso.com.au SEASON 2017 Music Director’s WELCOME and I have invited two of my most acclaimed predecessors back to the QSO for this season, Johannes Fritzsch and Muhai Tang — welcome to you both! I am honoured to be following these artists on the podium. In this first season, I have designed a diverse program sourced from many traditions and styles over several centuries. MAXIM There are treasures and delights throughout. Her achievements have attracted world-wide attention, in 2006 the China edition of Gramophone magazine featured her in a full- pagereport, and musical critics acclaimed her as “a rare new star in Asia”. Zhi-Jong is currently Associate Professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. PERFORMANCES Zhi-Jong’s recent accomplishments include a tour with Warsaw Philharmonic under Maestros Yoel Levi and Antoni Wit; her debutrecital at the Lucerne Festival and a tour with the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire under Pascal Rophé. Engagements in 2013/14 have also taken her to Japan where she gave highly acclaimed performances with the Osaka Century Orchestra and with the NHK Symphony Orchestra under Tadaaki Otaka, and earlier in the season she gave concerts in Hanoi for the first time. As well as performing the standard violin repertoire, Zhi-Jong is a passionate exponent of contemporary music, performing works by Gubaidulina, Weil, Lutoslawski, Schnittke, Ligeti, Schonberg, etc. Forth-coming premieres in the 2013/14 season include Ana Sokolovic’s Commedia dell'arte III and Nikolai Badinski’s Violin Concerto No.2. Following her first concert leading the orchestra from the violin with Ensemble Orchestral de Paris performing Mozart’s Violin Concerto no. 5 at the Cité de la Musique in Paris, ‘play-conducting’ has attracted Zhi-Jong’s interest and in recent seasons she has played/conducted Vivaldi/Piazzolla’s Four Seasons and several of the Mozart concerti.

    Bright Sheng is respected as one of the foremost composers of our time, whose stage, orchestral, chamber and vocal works are performed regularly throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Sheng’s music is noted for its lyrical and limpid melodies, a Shostakovich sense of breath in music phrases, a Bartokian sense of rhythmic propulsion, and dramatic and theatrical gestures. Many of Sheng’s works has strong Chinese and Asian influences, a result of his diligent study of Asian musical cultures for over three decades.     MUHAI TANG conductor Muhai Tang hails from Shanghai receiving his frst musical training at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and subsequently at the “Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich. He began his international career in 1983 conducting Berliner Philharmoniker's concerts at the invitation of his teacher Herbert von Karajan. After this promising start there, countless invitations followed to conduct many other leading orchestras in the world including the Dresden Staatskapelle, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the St.Petersburg Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, NSOW (National Symphony Orchestra Washington) and the Orchestre National de France. He performed on stage with some of the most internationally renowned soloists such as Lord Yehudi Menhuin, Marta Argerich, Pierre Fournier and Sir Giuseppe Giacomini among others. His invitations were not limited to orchestral but included also operatic concerts; he was appointed Chief Conductor of the Finland’s National Opera in Helsinki, he conducted Rossini’s Otello and Le Comte Ory with Cecilia Bartoli at the Opernhaus Zürich both flmed and released by Decca Records as DVD productions. He then went on to become the frst Chinese conductor to lead a new production at La Scala in Milan during the EXPO 2015, this again being Rossini’s Otello. Starting from 2017 he has been conducting each year in China the Wagner’s Ring Cycle. His enthusiasm for opera drove him to successfully conduct the Chinese premiere of the original opera “Marco Polo” by the CPAA Theaters at the Guangzhou Opera House in 2017 and its world premiere at Teatro Carlo Felice, Genoa, Italy in 2019.
