The Tŝilhqot’in National Government declared a local state of emergency in response to the slide yesterday and called on Ottawa to close fisheries for all Fraser River salmon. Today in B.C. ‘Mother Nature is a very powerful force’: Work continues on Big Bar landslide as salmon runs ready to enter Fraser River Federal and provincial officials are still working alongside First Nations and technical experts in an effort to clear enough of the Big Bar landslide — on the Fraser River near Lillooet — to allow what will soon be millions of salmon to make their way upriver to spawning grounds in the coming weeks. After several weeks of scaling work on the canyon cliffs above the slide, a team of 16 engineers is now working to manipulate rocks in the river to create a passage for the salmon, federal Fisheries Minister Jonathan Wilkinson told reporters yesterday. It’s gruelling work — ​ ​ temperatures at the site have reached 37 degrees celsius. “We don’t have a lot of time,” Wilkinson said. “A number of the Chinook runs are already circling and waiting to get up [river]. The sockeye runs … will start to arrive within a couple of weeks, probably by mid-August.

Ben Stewart Westside – Kelowna MLA Replaces Minister Bill Bennett For Immediate Release Media Contact: Paul Taylor (250) 356-2938 [email protected] June 11, 2010 (Victoria, BC) UBCM President Harry Nyce has spoken with the Honourable Ben Stewart to welcome him as the Minister of Community and Rural Development. Premier Gordon Campbell announced Mr. Stewart’s appointment as part of a cabinet shuffle earlier today. “Mr. Stewart has valued experience as an entrepreneur, community leader and Minister,” said Mr. Nyce. “We look forward to working with Mr. Stewart to build upon the solid collaborative relationship that UBCM shares with the provincial Government.” Mr. Stewart was elected MLA for Westside-Kelowna in the 2009 election and appointed Minister of Citizens' Services and Minister Responsible for Multiculturalism and the Public Affairs Bureau. Stewart founded and developed Quails Gate estate winery and has received the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for Community Service. Stewart replaces Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. “UBCM has appreciated Bill’s approach to local government matters,” said Nyce. “His candour, commitment and practicality have helped us to move forward on key files such the Elections Taskforce and the delivery of infrastructure funding. We wish Bill all the best in his new role as the Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources.” The Local Government Elections Taskforce recently delivered 31 recommendations to the Provincial Government to improve the elections process for local government. In September of 2009, the Province of British Columbia joined with Canada to announce over $400 million in joint funding for local government infrastructure.

    BC Poverty Reduction Coalition Year in Review The Impact of 2018 Congratulations to everyone who fought for poverty reduction legislation for a decade. On November 6 2018, the Poverty Reduction Strategy Act passed unanimously! Here are some of the actions the Coalition and our members took last year to push for the Act and for action to make it a reality. Poverty Reduction Consultations More than 70 organizational submissions from BC Poverty Reduction Coalition members, supporters and allies >1,000 geo-targeted emails to people in 27 cities 5 Submissions to the Poverty Reduction Consultations Report surveying 1,000 low income people in BC Staff attended 5 community consultations Hosted 4 small group discussions including a focus on working poverty and deaf/hard of hearing #AllOnBoard Campaign Supported UBC student consultation We launched the #AllOnBoard 265 individual emails to the Poverty Reduction Consultations campaign in June calling for free 2 events and 1 webinar in Prince George and in Vancouver transit for all children and youth aged 0-18 and a sliding scale pass for all based on income. The #AllOnBoard working group sent out mobile canvassing teams and received over 30 endorsements from candidates in the lead up to the municipal elections. In the first week of October, during Translink’s I♥ Transit week, we launched our own week of action. A team of #AllOnBoard and youth spokespeople presented to the Translink board meeting followed by a press conference outside their offices attended by many municipal candidates. As a result of this work, by early 2019, over 25 organizations endorsed the campaign, and municipal governments in #ABCplan Campaign New Westminster, Port Moody, Vancouver, Burnaby and Richmond passed motions demonstrating On July 10th, we launched the their support.

We are asking that you look at curling in a different light than other sports, for the mental and physical health of all participants. Curling is a sport that is being performed with social distancing the entire length of the game. We require teams to have just one sweeper, we also require them to stay 3 meters apart. They are also being asked to stay out of the locker rooms and go straight onto the ice. All the equipment is being sanitized before it is touched by each player. Masks are being worn upon entry into the venue until they exit. We really believe that curling can be played without inflicting undo risks on it’s participants. As well, for most of our junior to senior players it is the only social activity they get. ViaSport has managed to ensure that curling in the province follows all the guidelines laid out and is informed of all changes. Please consider seperating curling under the next order and allow all ages to return to play. Thank you for your time and the work you do.

    March 2, 2021 NEWS RELEASE OKANAGAN AT RISK OF EXTREME FLOODING IF PROVINCE DOESN’T UPDATE LAKE LEVEL MANAGEMENT Kelowna, B.C. – The Okanagan Basin Water Board (OBWB) has sent a letter to the Province of B.C., requesting a review of how it manages Okanagan lake levels in an effort to address the worst effects of climate change. The correspondence is backed up by letters of support from municipal governments throughout the valley. “We’re very concerned about the current lake level management and the risks of extreme flooding in the future,” explains OBWB Executive Director Anna Warwick Sears. “This is a serious problem we are facing. This is not hype.” At issue is the current management plan which was designed in the 1970s and which doesn’t accommodate for climate change. The Okanagan has experienced severe flooding in recent years and recent flood mapping for the valley has signaled that the way the lake is managed needs to change. The lake level issue was raised by the District of Peachland a few months back and has since been echoed by other valley municipalities. That, paired with the results shown by the maps, prompted the OBWB letter. “There is an urgent need to have this review,” the letter states. “While preparing Okanagan mainstem lakeshore flood maps (published in 2020), Northwest Hydraulic Consultants found that the frequency of flooding would be unacceptably high if the Okanagan Dam at Penticton continued to be operated in the same manner, given the expected increase in flows due to climate change…. The technical report for this effort found that as a result of climate change, floods will ‘exceed the capacity of existing infrastructure if operational rules are not adjusted.’ “We are asking the Government of B.C.
