December 17, 2020 Dr. Bonnie Henry Provincial Health Officer 4Th Floor 1515 Blanshard Street P O Box 9648 STN PROV GOVT Victori December 17, 2020 Dr. Bonnie Henry Provincial Health Officer 4th Floor 1515 Blanshard Street P O Box 9648 STN PROV GOVT Victoria BC V8W 9P4 Fax: (250) 952-1570 Email: [email protected] Dr. Henry First let me thank you for all you have done to guide the province throught these very trying times, I can only imagine how difficult it must be to take the high ground when so many want to take the easy path. We are asking that you look at curling in a different light than other sports, for the mental and physical health of all participants. Curling is a sport that is being performed with social distancing the entire length of the game. We require teams to have just one sweeper, we also require them to stay 3 meters apart. They are also being asked to stay out of the locker rooms and go straight onto the ice. All the equipment is being sanitized before it is touched by each player. Masks are being worn upon entry into the venue until they exit. We really believe that curling can be played without inflicting undo risks on it’s participants. As well, for most of our junior to senior players it is the only social activity they get. ViaSport has managed to ensure that curling in the province follows all the guidelines laid out and is informed of all changes. Please consider seperating curling under the next order and allow all ages to return to play. Thank you for your time and the work you do. We look forward to your response and if it is either positive or negative for us we appreciate all you and your staff are doing. Stay healthy Sincerely, Member of the Kelowna Curling Club JM/jt Cc MLA Kelowna-Lake Coutnry Norm Letnick [email protected] MLA Kelowna West Ben Stewart [email protected] MLA Kelowna-Mission Renee Merrifield [email protected] MLA Hon. • BC Veterinarians Need Your Help Combined
Hello If you wish to help BC veterinarians address the shortage of veterinarians, you may wish to write your local MLA and ask them to support and increase to the number of BC students trained as veterinarians. Below is a sample email for you to send to your local MLA. You can also add to the email or replace it with your own. After the sample email, on page 2 and 3, is a list of all MLA email addresses to help you to find your MLA contact information. Should you wish to learn more about the shortage of veterinarians and the need for additional BC students to be trained as veterinarians, please scroll down to page 4 to read our summary document. Your help is greatly appreciated! Dear MLA, I wish to add my name to the list of British Columbians who find the shortage of veterinarians in BC unacceptable. We understand that BC can add an additional 20 BC student seats to BC’s regional veterinary college, but that the government declined to do so, citing costs. In the interest of animal health and welfare issues including relief from suffering and unnecessary death, public health, and biosecurity for BC, we ask you to ask the Minister of Advanced Education Anne Kang to fund an additional 20 BC seats at WCVM effective immediately. As a BC resident, I want my voice added as an individual who cares about the health and welfare of animals and who wishes the government to provide funding to help alleviate the shortage of veterinarians in BC.

LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY of BRITISH COLUMBIA Honourable John Horgan, MLA Premier of British Columbia West Annex, Parliament Buildings Victoria, B.C. V8V 2L8 Honourable Adrian Dix, MLA Minister of Health Room 337, Parliament Buildings Victoria, B.C. V8V 2L8 March 12, 2021 Dear Premier Horgan & Minister Dix, We are writing today to urge you to take immediate action on increasing funding, clinical trials, and research into Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) here in British Columbia. ALS is a serious health issue in our country that impacts thousands of Canadians with around 1,000 dying each year from the disease. We know the hard work that goes into raising money to help fund patient services and critical research that, hopefully, will result in a world without ALS. B.C. lags far behind other provinces in the fight against ALS and the protection of those living with the disease. The ALS Clinic at GF Strong is woefully outdated and under- resourced, all while no dedicated physician care or clinical trials are currently available to ALS patients in our province. Currently, there are over 160 clinical trials that patients do not have access to here in British Columbia. Consequently, ALS patients are forced to travel to other provinces or the United States to participate in these important trials. This should be seen as unacceptable, at any time, but it is indefensible during a global pandemic. BC Liberal Official Opposition Parliament Buildings Victoria, BC V8V 1X4 T: 250-356-6171 LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY of BRITISH COLUMBIA This disease has serious impacts on those diagnosed with ALS as well as their families who often face great burdens in caring for their loved ones.
