The new species is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of the following morphological characters: 1) Small in size (SVL= 16.2 mm. in male); 2) truncated snout in dorsal view; 3) head wider than long (HW: HL= 1.36); 4) canthus rostralis and tympanum are indistinct; 5) nostril placed on the dorsal side of the snout; 6) tibiotarsal articulation not reaching the eye; 7) fingers and toes without disc; 8) toe webbing basal; 9) thigh and foot length are equal and smaller than shank; 10) skin tuberculated on dorsum; 11) ‘teddy bear’ dark brown mark on dorsum; 12) an inverted ‘V’-shaped dark brown mark above the vent. -

The new species is characterized by its small size with adult females measuring 38.4–41.6 mm in snout-vent length and males measuring 35.1–36.7 mm; head length approximately equal to head width; tympanum large and distinct, about 0.8 times of eye diameter; vomerine teeth on two weak ridges; tongue not notched behind; relative finger length II < I < IV < III; slight lateral fringes present on digits; toes bases with thick, fleshy web; dorsum with tubercles and swollen dorsolateral folds; large pustules scattered on flanks; and unique color patterns. -

M. obesa is characterized by stout and slightly small body with adult fe- males measuring 37.5–41.2 mm, adult male measuring 35.6 mm in snout-vent length; snout round in dorsal view; canthus rostralis developed; hindlimbs short, the heels not meeting, tibio-tarsal articulation reaching forward the posterior margin of eye. -

Mr. Darwin's voyage in the Beagle is a model of what such a book should be; and Mr. Wallace, whose share in supportiug Mr. Darwin's theory is well known, has written an account of his journeys in the Malay Archipelago which may be fairly put beside it. One circumstance about it is sufficiently significant. Mr. Wallace's journeys were spread over eight years, and more than six years have elapsed since his return, owing to ill-health and to the difficulties of arranging his large collections, amounting to over 125,000 specimens. Now it is obvious that had Mr. Wallace followed the example of book-making travellers, and tumbled out upon us voluminous masses of undigested diary and scientific disquisition, be might have composed a work from which the boldest reader would have shrunk in undisguised dismay. On the scale which some recent travellers have adopted, he would have filled a good-sized bookshelf. As it is, he has contented himself with two volumes of moderate size, of which he modestly says that they are" far too small for the extent of the subjects ' treated. Certainly, if it had heen his purpose to give us a hand book to the Archipelago, or an exhaustive disquisition upon its natural products, or even a full account of all his own ad ventures, the space would have been ridiculously small. -

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Congolius, a new genus of African reed frog endemic to the central Congo: A potential case of convergent evolution Tadeáš Nečas1,2*, Gabriel Badjedjea3, Michal Vopálenský4 & Václav Gvoždík1,5* The reed frog genus Hyperolius (Afrobatrachia, Hyperoliidae) is a speciose genus containing over 140 species of mostly small to medium-sized frogs distributed in sub-Saharan Africa. Its high level of colour polymorphism, together with in anurans relatively rare sexual dichromatism, make systematic studies more difcult. As a result, the knowledge of the diversity and taxonomy of this genus is still limited. Hyperolius robustus known only from a handful of localities in rain forests of the central Congo Basin is one of the least known species. Here, we have used molecular methods for the frst time to study the phylogenetic position of this taxon, accompanied by an analysis of phenotype based on external (morphometric) and internal (osteological) morphological characters. Our phylogenetic results undoubtedly placed H. robustus out of Hyperolius into a common clade with sympatric Cryptothylax and West African Morerella. To prevent the uncovered paraphyly, we place H. robustus into a new genus, Congolius. The review of all available data suggests that the new genus is endemic to the central Congolian lowland rain forests. The analysis of phenotype underlined morphological similarity of the new genus to some Hyperolius species. This uniformity of body shape (including cranial shape) indicates that the two genera have either retained ancestral morphology or evolved through convergent evolution under similar ecological pressures in the African rain forests. African reed frogs, Hyperoliidae Laurent, 1943, are presently encompassing almost 230 species in 17 genera. -

Effects of Poaching, Habitat Destruction, and Climate Change On Nepenthes Lucas Barron 4/27/19 Effects of Poaching, Habitat Destruction, and Climate Change On Nepenthes Lucas Barron; 4/27/2018 1 Effects of Poaching, Habitat Destruction, and Climate Change On Nepenthes When Dominick Gravine, and avid Nepenthes collector and seller, visited Borneo in March of 2013 to trek up the slopes of mount Trusmadi, he not only saw the endangered Nepenthes species that inhabit the misty slopes, but also the effects of the rapid urbanization of the local villages. He saw ‘palm oil plantations as far as the eye Dominick Gravine and his collection of Nepenthes can see.’ (-Gravine). “Palm oil plantations completely clear the land of its natural biodiversity.’ (-Gravine). “While in the local villages, I was offered many plants which were obviously taken from the wild. The locals see these plants as a source of money. The over collect and sell them to collectors.” (-Gravine) While climbing the mountains, he saw many seed stalks cut of many plants from people along the trails, which has a large impact on these plants’ ability to reproduce. Habitat destruction and excessive poaching is having a severe Nepenthes Veitchii 'Candy Dreams'; created by Dominick Gravine effect on plant species not only in places like Borneo, but also worldwide. Although many people deny human caused endangerment of plant species due to excessive poaching, reckless destruction of habitats globally, and climate change, Effects of Poaching, Habitat Destruction, and Climate Change On Nepenthes Lucas Barron; 4/27/2018 2 has a profound, and rather severe, effect on plant species globally, but especially in extremely delicate regions of the world, such as the Indonesian islands. -

A new centrolenid-like anuran larva from Borneo (Anura: Ranidae) RUDOLF MALKMUS & JOACHIM KOSUCH & JÖRG KREUTZ ABSTRACT The fossorial larva of Staurois natator (GÜNTHER, 1859) is the only known morphological tadpole type in the Old World, the extern-morphological characters of which are nearly identical with features of larvae of the neotropic tree frog family Centrolenidae. They are characterized by a depressed body, a long tail with reduced fins, small eyes in dorsal position, and a barely pigmented skin. They live fossorial, dwelling leaf litter at the margins of forest streams. A further centrolenid-like tadpole from Borneo is described: the larva of S. tuberilinguis BOULENGER, 1918. The larvae of S. tuberilinguis and S. natator most conspicuously differ in the number of ventral tooth rows: 6 in S. tuberilinguis, 8-10 in S. natator. In similar habitats similar selective pressures on larvae of diverse phylogentic lineages - so in spe- cies of Staurois and Centrolenidae - resulted in convergence of morphological features. KURZFASSUNG Die fossoriale Larve von Staurois natator (GÜNTHER, 1859) war die bisher einzig bekannte altweltliche Anu- renlarve, die extern-morphologisch nahezu identisch mit dem Larventypus neotropischer Baumfrösche der Familie Centrolenidae ist. Diese Larven weisen einen abgeflachten Körper, langen Schwanz mit reduzierten Flossensäumen, kleine, dorsal gelegene Augen und eine kaum pigmentierte Haut auf. Sie besiedeln Ansammlungen abgestorbenen Laubes in kleinen Rinnsalen oder am Rand von Bächen und Flüssen.
