Makerere University Fact Book ix FOREWORD

Makerere University Fact Book is born! The University used to have a similar publication called ‘FACTS ABOUT MAKERERE UNIVERSITY’, which went into limbo many years ago. The publication used to provide information about the University relating to student enrollment, human resources and space

‘ FACTS ABOUT MAKERERE UNIVERSITY’ last saw the light of day in 1990/1991 academic year. The Department of Planning and Development is pleased to pull the Fact Book from limbo. We have re christened the resurrected creature ‘ Makerere University Fact Book’.

The resurrection of the Fact Book is in line with the revised enterprise strategy of the Planning and Development Department, which is ‘To coordinate planning in the University and offer support to strategic and operational decision making in the University through collection , analysis and interpretation of institutional and externally sourced data’

The Fact Book is designed to provide current information about Makerere University in a fiscal year to support decision- making. The information is synthesized from the University’s data banks notably Academic Records Information System (ARIS); Human Resource Information system (HURIS) and Financial Management Information System (FINIS). Other sources of data from which information has been processed include, among others, the University Library and Estates Department. The Fact Book will be produced annually by the Department of Planning and Development and will be available both in hard and soft formats. For those who prefer a digital format, please check http// Pdd.mak.ac.ug

As you review and use this maiden edition, we would request that you make a note of items that you feel should be added, modified or expunged. In producing the Makerere University Fact Book, kaizen or continuous improvement will be our guiding philosophy and so future publications of the Fact Book will reflect feed back for change. To this end, we appeal to our stakeholders to give us their critique.

We appreciate your ideas and interest.

John K.W Wabwire Director, Planning and Development

Makerere University has three admission channels to the undergraduate programmes: Direct Entry scheme, for students who have completed secondary school and sat the Advanced Certificate of Education in a maximum of two years preceding the year of admission; Diploma holders scheme, for students from other tertiary institutions seeking to obtain a university degree; and the Mature age entry scheme for students who have been out of the formal education system for not less than six years. Undergraduate admission criteria however, fall under two different categories:

i) Based on scholarship and sponsorship; this includes state/government sponsored students and private/fee paying students, the category is further subdivided into- national merit, district quota, disabled and sports students. The category also includes Tanzanian students under the Inter University Council for East Africa an exchange programme for Ugandan and Tanzanian university students; and ii) Students are also categorized according to the time schedule of the programmes: day, afternoon, evening or external. Day/afternoon and Day/ evening programmes are predominantly parallel programmes offering similar content and assessment. External programmes are offered in distance education mode. There is however, a provision for face to face sessions to provide interaction between staff and students each semester.

While the number of A’level applicants has doubled over the past ten years, the university has more or less maintained a constant intake figure over the same period.
