The University used to have a similar publication called ‘FACTS ABOUT MAKERERE UNIVERSITY’, which went into limbo many years ago. The publication used to provide information about the University relating to student enrollment, human resources and space ‘ FACTS ABOUT MAKERERE UNIVERSITY’ last saw the light of day in 1990/1991 academic year. The Department of Planning and Development is pleased to pull the Fact Book from limbo. We have re christened the resurrected creature ‘ Makerere University Fact Book’. The resurrection of the Fact Book is in line with the revised enterprise strategy of the Planning and Development Department, which is ‘To coordinate planning in the University and offer support to strategic and operational decision making in the University through collection , analysis and interpretation of institutional and externally sourced data’ The Fact Book is designed to provide current information about Makerere University in a fiscal year to support decision- making. The information is synthesized from the University’s data banks notably Academic Records Information System (ARIS); Human Resource Information system (HURIS) and Financial Management Information System (FINIS). Other sources of data from which information has been processed include, among others, the University Library and Estates Department. The Fact Book will be produced annually by the Department of Planning and Development and will be available both in hard and soft formats. For those who prefer a digital format, please check http// Pdd.mak.ac.ug As you review and use this maiden edition, we would request that you make a note of items that you feel should be added, modified or expunged. In producing the Makerere University Fact Book, kaizen or continuous improvement will be our guiding philosophy and so future publications of the Fact Book will reflect feed back for change. To this end, we appeal to our stakeholders to give us their critique. We appreciate your ideas and interest. John K.W Wabwire Director, Planning and Development Makerere University Fact Book 1 General Information Foundation Established in 1922 as a technical college, Makerere University was affiliated to the University of London until 1963 when it became one of the three constituent colleges of the University of East Africa. It became an independent University in 1970 by Act of Parliament. This status continued until 2001 when the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act was enacted. University Estate The University Estate is spread over three campuses. The350 acre Main campus is located on Makerere Hill, 5 km from the city centre. The 45 acre College of Health Sciences- Formerly (Faculty of Medicine and School of Public Health) is located on Mulago Hill adjacent to the National Referral Hospital – 2 km from the Main Campus. The Agricultural Research Institute, Kabanyolo is located 30kms. The University Estate also includes, a 350 acre Buyana Stock Farm – under the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is located 60kms on the Kampala -Masaka highway. Kasangati Health Centre- Linked to the School of Public Health. Kibale Forest Reserve under the Institute of Environment and Natural Resource and Budongo Forest Reserve under the Faculty of Forestry and Nature Conservation. Attached to the Institute of Adult and Continuing Education are 9 adult education and extramural centres. The University also has residential housing estates located in the outskirts of Kampala namely Kololo, Katalemwa, Makindye, Makerere North and Bwaise. Governance The University Council is the supreme governance body- The University council works through six Committees. The University has 28 Post graduate diploma and 104 Masters Degree programmes.
