There are 12 colleges of the University of Melbourne which admit undergraduate and postgraduate students, allo n campus orwithi n easywalkin g distance. Collegelif e hasbee n an important aspect ofthe University of Melbourne for well "over a century. The colleges provide both academic and pastoral support to resident students, as well as rich opportunities for extra-curricular activities and for developing friendships with other students from all faculties. Educational programs of small-group tutorials aresupporte d byfacilitie s such aslibraries, compute r rooms,an d music practice rooms.

Residence in college offers security and comfort in fully furnished single rooms. Most student rooms have Internet as well as telephone connections. Catering isprovide d bycolleges ,an d communal dining creates opportunities to meet academicstaff , professionals and guest speakers,a swel la sothe r students. Limited self-catering facilities are provided bysom eofth e colleges.

Living in College is often cheaper than living in rented accommodation, as well as more convenient. College charges include meals, utilities, and use of many facilities, as well as academic and personal support, opportunities for extra-curricular involvement, and the chance to belong to a friendly community. Typically, colleges only requiFe payment for the academic year of 32t o 35weeks , enabling students to lower costs by returning home during major vacations,bu t also offer accommodation for as many further weeks as students need. Scholarships and various forms of financial assistance are available in allcolleges .

College students have the opportunity to participate in a rich cultural, social and sporting life, which is largely organised by each college student club. They enjoy access to individual college sporting resources in addition toth eexcellen tsportin g facilities offered on campus.

All colleges in the University of Melbourne are co-educational, and accept applicants regardless of gender or religion. Students who choose to reside in college enter into awa y of life that enriches the university experience. While there are many similarities shared by the colleges, each has its unique and distinguishing features. Colleges vary considerably in size. Student rooms range in style from contemporary to Victorian, according to the age of the individual college. Most colleges offer scholarship assistance but the nature and extent of this vanes between colleges. The facilities and academic programs of the colleges also vary, as do the other activities that characterise college life.

The Standard Fee isfo r a single study-bedroom with shared bathroom facilities, and is the annual fee paid in two semester instalments.
