‘AVENGING ANGEL’ CAST BIOS KEVIN SORBO (Preacher) – For seven years, Kevin Sorbo played the hulking, heroic lead in USA Network’s “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys,” a role that made him a star. But the self-described jock from Minnetonka, Minnesota (the home of Tonka Toys), the fourth of five kids, got the acting bug at age 11 seeing something quite different – the musical “Oklahoma” and Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice” at Minneapolis’s famed Guthrie Theater. Though he made his first commercial - for Target - while attending the University of Minnesota, Sorbo graduated from Moorehead State University in Fargo, North Dakota, with a dual degree in advertising and marketing. In 1982, after college, Kevin moved to Texas, where he began studying acting in earnest. A model friend there convinced him to travel to Europe, where he stayed for three years, building a tremendous commercial reel, with spots shot in cities from Milan and Munich to Paris and London. Within days of his return to the States in 1985, he shipped off to Australia for new commercial assignments, returning to L.A. six months later. Sorbo remained in demand through the early 90s, for both television and commercial work – he estimates appearing in 57 spots in the three years prior to being cast as Hercules. After appearing in such series as “Murder, She Wrote,” “Cheers” and “The Commish,” and after seven call backs with producer Sam Raimi, Kevin was given the role of Hercules. The character appeared first in a series of two hour movies as part of USA Network’s “The Action Pack,” alongside William Shatner’s “Tek Wars” and others – Hercules being the sole survivor of the group and landing its own series.

Mann, Chair This dissertation examines the relationship between Hollywood and American Christianity from 1998 to the present—a time frame that encompasses the recent rise of the “Christian blockbusters.” This period saw unprecedented interaction between Hollywood and what has been called the “Christian film industry,” or “Holywood”—a loose and ever-changing assortment of Christian film companies and independent filmmakers that have operated in one form or another since the silent era and whose productions were, until recently, primarily relegated to local theatrical markets, church screenings, and Christian television. Although historically unprecedented, this new interaction between Hollywood and “Holywood” can be understood as a clear extension of the rise of both new media technology and transmedia industries. This ii dissertation argues that a once not-for-profit filmmaking exercise by Christian filmmakers, for the purposes of inner-church ministry, has now become a huge business built upon selling films to churches as resources for both inner-church ministry and outer-church evangelism.

Rewriting Xena: Warrior Princess Resistance to representations of gender, ethnicity, class and sexuality in fanfiction Name: H.C.J.M. Spierings Student Number: 0134066 Supervisors: Dr. M. Zarzycka Dr. N. Stienstra Date: August 2007 Institution: Utrecht University Faculty of Arts English language and culture Preface Anyone in academia, especially those who have written theses or dissertations, can attest to the emotional components of supposedly rational activity. A figure or topic can become the focal point of one’s life; anything even remotely connected to one’s research interest can have tremendous impact and obsessive appeal. (Jenson, 1992, p.21) Nevertheless, the result can be most gratifying: a thesis about a woman who carries ‘a round throwy thingy’, her sidekick, a Greek setting with an American accent, a performance in six acts, and the vernacular epos of thousands of fans who know that ‘the quill is mightier than the sword’. Gabrielle: “No one gives me credit for anything and everyone thinks I’m a silly sidekick.” Xena: “Gabrielle, from now on I’m going to make sure that you get a lot more credit for the things you do, that’s a promise.” ( 3.18 ‘Fins, Femmes, Gems’) Thank you: Dr. Marta Zarzycka, my supervisor, for your insight, constructive and much appreciated advice, and for keeping me on track. Dr. Nelly Stienstra, my second supervisor, for taking the time and effort to read this work and provide me with useful comments. Petra de Jong, for taking the time to talk to me and inform me about the world of Xenites, and for lending me two, for her as precious as for me useful, books.

  • KEVIN SORBO As a Strong Leading Man and a Hunky Half‐God, Kevin
KEVIN SORBO As a strong leading man and a hunky Half‐God, Kevin Sorbo brings a refreshing cadence to Hollywood. Growing up in Mound, Minnesota, a western suburb of Minneapolis, the "Sorbs" excelled at football, baseball, basketball, and golf, but his passion was always with the theater. After studying marketing and advertising at Moorhead State University and the University of Minnesota, Kevin joined an actors theater group in Dallas, Texas before traveling to Europe for 3 ½ years and another 6 months in Sydney, Australia, where he enrolled in theater courses and modeled for print ads and appeared in over 50 commercials. When he returned to the States, Kevin settled in Los Angeles where he studied acting with Bill Traylor at the Loft Studios, Janet Alhanti, and Roy London. Sorbo shot over 150 commercials and began making prime time appearances on shows such as “Dallas”, “The Commish”, and “Murder She Wrote”. Kevin received international stardom as Hercules on the hit TV series, “Hercules, the Legendary Journeys “ (1993‐1999). After the success of the initial five, two‐hour movies the series exploded onto the mainstream, airing in 176 countries and surpassing rating‐topper “Baywatch” as the most watched TV show in the world. Sorbo also directed two episodes and co‐wrote one installment of the Hercules. As season seven of Hercules was ending, Sorbo signed with the Tribune Company and went on to star in the lead role of Captain Dylan Hunt in Gene Roddenberry’s, Andromeda. The series was created by Gene Roddenberry off the heels of Star Trek in 1969 and revived in 2000.

  • Sean O'connor DSG 630 Dr. Jones 25 March 2015 Pure Flix + Ribbow
Sean O’Connor DSG 630 Dr. Jones 25 March 2015 Pure Flix + Ribbow Media = $60+ Million In 2014, dubbed “the year of the Christian film” (McKay) by several critics, a particular movie made a huge splash at the box office, ultimately earning over $60 million worldwide off a production budget of $2 million. The movie was God’s Not Dead, and it currently ranks above films like Courageous and Fireproof as “the top-grossing film ever made by and for evangelicals” (Chattaway). God’s Not Dead was produced by Pure Flix Entertainment, a company that has been producing and releasing several Christian films a year for the last several years; so why, after all that time, did this film suddenly become such a huge hit? The answer lies in the way that Pure Flix and the companies it teamed up with on social media, specifically Ribbow Media, to target their evangelical audience and spread the word through marketing. Pure Flix originated in 2005, and in 2013, it was producing eight to ten films a year and distributed an additional 15 per year (Religion News Service). Rather than releasing these films theatrically, Pure Flix more often targeted TV networks like the Gospel Music Channel, Christian bookstores such as LifeWay, other retailers like Wal-Mart and Netflix, and churches. They even set up their own Movie Ministry where churches can purchase entire kits to not only show licensed copies of Pure Flix films on DVD but also promote the films as events with color posters, handbills, and even movie passes. Also included are relevant study guides that the Movie Ministry website claims are “perfect for small group Bible studies, retreats, and youth camps.” The low-budget films of Pure Flix may not have broken into the mainstream, but they certainly found an audience among evangelical consumers.
