Getting Grace Sometimes When Death Calls, S Lifehappen
JUNE 2017 WWW.NFDA.ORG The Funeral Director in Popular Culture Getting Grace Sometimes When Death Calls, s LifeHappen 34 June 2017 THE DIRECTOR By Edward J. Defort The portrayal of funeral directors in the ma- jority of movies and television shows sel- dom strays far from the clichés of yesteryear. Few productions focus on the human side of the funeral director, who is usually a minor character, sometimes sinister and often ec- centric. The forthcoming independent feature film, Getting Grace, is an exception. Actor Daniel Roebuck, who also co-wrote and di- rected the film, portrays Bill Jankowski, a funeral director who has seemingly with- drawn from life and whose life is turned up- side down by a 16-year-old girl dying of can- cer. “The dying girl is more alive than he is,” Roebuck says of his character. Best known for his roles in feature films such as The Fugitive and U.S. Marshals, as well as TV series including Matlock and Lost, Roebuck can currently be seen in the critically acclaimed Amazon Prime series Man in the High Castle. Glancing at his list of credits, it would probably be easier to list the programs in which the veteran character actor has not appeared rather than the ones in which he has. But despite having such an extensive film résumé, Roebuck calls himself a frustrat- ed funeral director, and it was a label that s seemed to follow him throughout his life. s Born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Roe- buck worked in a food store while attending Bethlehem Catholic High School, known as Behind the Becahi. -

THE PROTEST ANT CHURCH in KOREA A. the First Protestant Efforts in Korea the History of the Protestant Churches in Korea Begins
CHAPTER FIVE THE PROTESTANT CHURCH IN KOREA A. The First Protestant Efforts in Korea The history of the Protestant churches in Korea begins with certain mis sionary probes which were made from the first third of the nineteenth century onwards. All of these early moves were seen as an extension of the work of various missionary bodies in China. One also gathers from reading the various sources that these early Protestant missionaries were comparatively ignorant of the development of the Roman Catholic Church in Korea. The first Protestant missionary who is known to have made efforts to begin evangelism in the peninsula was Carl FA Gutzlaff (1803 to 1851). A native of Pomerania, and a graduate of the theological school at Halle, Gutzlaff originally served with the Netherlands Missionary Society until 1828 when he resigned from their service. Eventually, he went to Macao, were he renewed his frendship with the great Chinese missionary, Robert Morrison (1782 to 1834). Between the years 1831 to 1833, Gutzlaff undertook several exploratory trips along the coast of China to evaluate the possibility of commencing mission work there. Later, during the years 1833 to 1839, he conducted further explorations and, follow ing the conclusion of the Opium War, created the China Union in 1843. This organization was to be an evangelistic society using native evangelists, and is often referred to as the 'grandfather' of the China Inland Mission. Gutzlaff's untimely death in 1851 precluded further development of this group. During the first series of missionary expeditions, Gutzlaff visited the coast of Korea in 1832 with copies of the Scriptures in Chinese which Morrison had given Gutzlaff to distribute. -

A Theological Analysis of the Non-Church Movement in Korea with a Special Reference to the Formation of Its Spirituality
A THEOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE NON-CHURCH MOVEMENT IN KOREA WITH A SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE FORMATION OF ITS SPIRITUALITY by SUN CHAE HWANG A Thesis Submitted to The University of Birmingham For the Degree of MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY School of Philosophy, Theology and Religion College of Arts and Law The University of Birmingham June 2012 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT This study provides a new theological approach for interpreting the Non- Church Movement (NCM) in Korea. Previous studies have been written from a historical perspective. Therefore, an examination of the spirituality and characteristics of the NCM from a theological standpoint is a new approach. The present study investigates the connection between the NCM and Confucianism. It attempts to highlight the influence of Confucian spirituality on the NCM, in particular the Confucian tradition of learning. It also examines the link between the NCM and Quakerism, in particular the influence of Quaker ecclesiology on the NCM. This too has not been examined in previous studies. The thesis argues that the theological roots of NCM ecclesiology lie in the relatively flat ecclesiology of the Quaker movement in the USA. -

Media Industry Approaches to Comic-To-Live-Action Adaptations and Race
From Serials to Blockbusters: Media Industry Approaches to Comic-to-Live-Action Adaptations and Race by Kathryn M. Frank A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Communication) in the University of Michigan 2015 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Amanda D. Lotz, Chair Professor Susan J. Douglas Professor Lisa A. Nakamura Associate Professor Aswin Punathambekar © Kathryn M. Frank 2015 “I don't remember when exactly I read my first comic book, but I do remember exactly how liberated and subversive I felt as a result.” ― Edward W. Said, Palestine For Mom and Dad, who taught me to be my own hero ii Acknowledgements There are so many people without whom this project would never have been possible. First and foremost, my parents, Paul and MaryAnn Frank, who never blinked when I told them I wanted to move half way across the country to read comic books for a living. Their unending support has taken many forms, from late-night pep talks and airport pick-ups to rides to Comic-Con at 3 am and listening to a comics nerd blather on for hours about why Man of Steel was so terrible. I could never hope to repay the patience, love, and trust they have given me throughout the years, but hopefully fewer midnight conversations about my dissertation will be a good start. Amanda Lotz has shown unwavering interest and support for me and for my work since before we were formally advisor and advisee, and her insight, feedback, and attention to detail kept me invested in my own work, even in times when my resolve to continue writing was flagging. -

PART THREE Chapter Five Hope
PART THREE Chapter Five Hope For many former members of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) after World War I, life on the land on a small poultry or vegetable block in company with other returned men represented more than just a return to civilian life. It was hope – hope that the horrors of war could be erased, hope that the emerging new world would be more prosperous, and hope that their lives would be re-built through their own enterprise of land ownership. For a considerable number of men on these group settlements it was also their last hope. Expectations of success were, therefore, high in the beginning on these settlements. The previous chapters of this thesis have outlined the settlements’ origins and establishment and some of the issues facing settlers, such as poor quality land, stock or crops. These difficulties made earning a living from small acreages more arduous than the men had been led to believe and they often soon found themselves with little income and a massive debt. In addition to the problems of flooding and inferior land, badly constructed homes, poor communication systems, and isolation for themselves and their families, most of the men had war-related disabilities to contend with. In spite of all these challenges, these soldier settlers attempted to re-adapt to civilian life and to build a sustainable community as part of a group soldier settlement. To support the argument of this thesis that most soldier settlers on the six group settlements in this study returned from World War I service physically and mentally 180 scarred, leaving them with long-term or permanent disabilities, a number of primary sources have been used to build a picture of how they struggled to make a living after the war.
