ADDRESS THE FUTURE OF CATHOLIC SOCIAL THOUGHT William J. Byron, SJ. * Catholic social teaching always speaks to what the Church likes to call "the social question." Good pedagogy begins with good questions. Good social theory emerges when clear thinking engages itself with truly signifi- cant social problems. This relationship of problem to theory is well known. It can serve to remind that identification of the truly significant social prob- lem is step one in the elaboration of any identifiable strand of Catholic social doctrine. Put another way, it points to our ability or inability as a Church to ask the right social question. One of the welcome by-products of the 1991 centennial celebration of Pope Leo XIII's cornerstone social encyclical Rerum Novarum in books, articles, colloquia, seminars, and, of course, in the publication by Pope John Paul II of the commemorative encyclical Centesimus -

Malloy Chairman, Committee on International Justice and Peace United States Conference of Catholic Bishops September 1, 2021 Towards an ecological conscience In his message for the 1990 World Day of Peace, Pope St. John Paul II warned of a “profound moral crisis of which the destruction of the environment is only one troubling aspect.”1 Twenty-five years later, Pope Francis further developed the important moral dimensions of ecology and its interrelatedness to other human and spiritual concerns in his encyclical, Laudato si’. The moral dimension of the ecological crisis demands that each of us cultivate an ecological conscience, one that enables us to see clearly, judge rightly, and act ethically when it comes to the care of “our common home.”2 Environmental problems can be difficult to understand because they involve highly complex scientific and technical interactions between natural phenomena, animal and ecosystem behaviors, and human actions. This difficulty is exacerbated by the complexity of communication and globalization in the modern world. Despite ever-increasing forms of communication and social media, we must admit that “the flood of information at our fingertips does not make for greater wisdom,”3 and at times is even deliberately used to confuse and manipulate consciences. Faithful Witness as Women in the Church The Amazon Synod, Querida Amazonia, and Faithful Witness as Women in the Church by Sister Eileen White, GNSH Last October, Pope Francis convoked an Amazon Synod, that is, a meeting of Church representatives to look at the gifts, needs, and concerns of the people of the Amazon regions of South America, which includes Brazil, Peru, Columbia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. We Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart have been looking at many iterations of the commitment to “offer faithful witness as women in the Church” – historically and in today’s world; offered by us, as well as by many other women, both lay and religious. The Amazon Synod, the preparatory conferences for it, the resulting synod report, and Pope Francis’ response to the Synod in Querida Amazonia -- all revealed the vital witness of so many women in the Church in these rich regions of South America. Thirty-two religious and laywomen were representatives at the Synod, ten of whom were religious women. Noting that one non-ordained male religious was allowed to vote, breaking the tradition of excluding non-ordained participants from the privilege, many Sisters – both those named as observers of the Synod and others throughout the world -- lobbied for religious Sisters to be included in that privilege, thus offering one aspect of “faithful witness as women in the Church.” Although the vote was not granted, many voting participants joined the Sisters in the questioning about that exclusion. However, speaking for many religious and laywomen observers at the conference, Capuchin Sister Daniela Adriana Cannavina, secretary-general of the Latin American and Caribbean Confederation of Religious said, “The voice of religious life, especially of women, has been heard” in the plenary sessions and small-group discussions on which the synod’s recommendations will be based. -

The Holy See ENCYCLICAL LETTER FRATELLI TUTTI OF THE HOLY FATHER FRANCIS ON THE FRATERNITY AND SOCIAL FRIENDSHIP 1. “FRATELLI TUTTI”.[1] With these words, Saint Francis of Assisi addressed his brothers and sisters and proposed to them a way of life marked by the flavour of the Gospel. Of the counsels Francis offered, I would like to select the one in which he calls for a love that transcends the barriers of geography and distance, and declares blessed all those who love their brother “as much when he is far away from him as when he is with him”.[2] In his simple and direct way, Saint Francis expressed the essence of a fraternal openness that allows us to acknowledge, appreciate and love each person, regardless of physical proximity, regardless of where he or she was born or lives. 2. This saint of fraternal love, simplicity and joy, who inspired me to write the Encyclical Laudato Si’, prompts me once more to devote this new Encyclical to fraternity and social friendship. Francis felt himself a brother to the sun, the sea and the wind, yet he knew that he was even closer to those of his own flesh. Wherever he went, he sowed seeds of peace and walked alongside the poor, the abandoned, the infirm and the outcast, the least of his brothers and sisters. WITHOUT BORDERS 3. There is an episode in the life of Saint Francis that shows his openness of heart, which knew no bounds and transcended differences of origin, nationality, colour or religion. It was his visit to Sultan Malik-el-Kamil, in Egypt, which entailed considerable hardship, given Francis’ poverty, his scarce resources, the great distances to be traveled and their differences of language, culture and religion. -

In reading the reports of the various CIB regions contained in these pages, I have seen some common issues that seem to bind us together in this. First and foremost, we can see that this time has been both a challenge and a blessing for us. There have been unexpected benefits for our monastic communities even as we have experienced many undesired limitations and some fear, as well as sickness and death (both in our communities and in our families). -

1 Fratelli tutti Summary Shadows over the closed world (Ch. 1) are spreading everywhere, leaving injured people by the roadside, cast out and discarded. The shadows plunge humanity into confusion, loneliness, and desolation. When we come upon an injured stranger on the road (Ch. 2), we can assume one of two attitudes: we can pass by or we can stop to help. The type of person we are and the type of political, social or religious group we belong to will be defined by whether we include or exclude the injured stranger. God is universal love, and as long as we are part of that love and share in it, we are called to universal fraternity, which is openness to all. There are no "others,” no "them," there is only "us”. We want, with God and in God, an open world (Ch. 3), a world without walls, without borders, without people rejected, without strangers. To achieve this world, we must have an open heart (Ch. 4). We need to experience social friendship, seek what is morally good, and practice a social ethic because we know we are part of a universal fraternity. We are called to solidarity, encounter, and gratuitousness. To create an open world with an open heart, it is necessary to engage in politics, and a better kind of politics (Ch. 5) is essential. Politics for the common and universal good. Politics that is “popular” because it is for and with the people. It is politics with social charity that seeks human dignity. The politics of men and women who practice political love by integrating the economy with the social and cultural fabric into a consistent and life-giving human project. -

INDIVIDUALISM HAS FAILED, FRATERNITY WILL SAVE US From the "common home" to be guarded and protected (theme of the encyclical Laudato Si') to Fratelli Tutti, Pope Francis’s gaze extends to “all of us” who inhabit this world, our common home. The encyclical represents a large, varied, complex diptych, rich in themes, dominated and enriched by some key expressions: we live in a world "without a common route"; the pandemic has highlighted and aggravated injustices and inequalities. "In today's world, the feelings of belonging to the same mankind are weakening, while the dream of building justice and peace together seems a utopia of other times. We see how comfortable, cold and globalized indifference dominates, the daughter of a profound disillusionment that lies behind the deception of an illusion: believing that we can be omnipotent and forget that we are all in the same boat " (par. 30). In Laudato Si' one of the key expressions was: “Everything is connected”. From a conceptual point of view, Pope Francis has developed the term "ecology" not in the generic meaning of some "green" concern, but in the deeper meaning of a complex system that finds an explanation in the relationship of the individual parts to each other and to the all. In Fratelli Tutti the view is extended to the theme of fraternity: what is distant concerns us. The gaze of fraternity is never shortsighted. It is evangelical and human, but also far more realistic than many "scientific" or "concrete" political ideologies. The encyclical underlines that everyone is the guardian of justice and peace: they are not accomplished by themselves - perhaps through the market - once and for all: they must be cultivated over and over again, individually and collectively. -
