Healthy People Dr. Hugh Twomey Health Centre, Botwood, NL; A0H 1E0 Healthy C om m u n ities (709) 257-5226 Web - www.centralhealth.nl.ca Exploits Health Service area is located in the Central North Eastern portion of Newfoundland, servicing the communities of Bishop‘s Falls, Botwood, Peterview, Northern Arm and communities located on branch roads, north to Leading Tickles and Fortune Harbour. The community of Botwood serves as the base for the full con- tinuum of primary health services provided to the ~ 10 000 citizens within the Health Service area. These ser- vices are provided through the Dr. Hugh Twomey Health Centre and the Exploits Community Health Centre. The Dr. Hugh Twomey Health Care Centre is a multi-faceted facility with 80 beds (76 long-term care, 2 res- pite, 1 palliative care and 1 sub acute) designed to provide clinical and 24 hour Category B Emergency ser- vices , diagnostic services, and long-term care services (level III & IV care) to communities within the Ex- ploits Health Services area. The Centre has a 29 bed Protective Care Unit, a 39 bed LTC Nursing Unit and is home to the 12 bed Exploits Memorial Veteran‘s Pavilion, a unit dedicated for Veteran‘s residing in Central Newfoundland. Additional ser- vices available at Dr. Hugh Twomey Health Care Centre include: 24-hour nursing service, social worker, rec- reation therapy program, clinical dietitian, pastoral care, volunteer program, palliative care program, Nursing and Protective Care respite. This modern facility has five family practice physicians and a nurse practitioner. The Centre is affiliated with the Memorial University School of Medicine and is a teaching centre for physicians enrolled in the university's Family Practice Program. The Centre opened in 1989. The Exploits Community Health Centre is a facility designed to provide community health services to com- munities within the Exploits Health Services area. Located on Airbase Rd. in Botwood, the Centre houses Public Health, Continuing Care and Child, Youth and Family Services programs. Town of Botwood The Town of Botwood, incorporated in 1960 with a current population of approximately 3100, is a small com- munity nestled in the heart of the Exploits Valley–a beautiful area which encompasses much of Central New- foundland. Primarily a seaport town, Botwood has a stunning landscape, including a scenic and peaceful har- bour, suitable for both leisure and economic purposes. Featuring all the amenities of a larger town while still maintaining the rustic country charm which appeals to so many people, Botwood has proven to be an ideal en- vironment to complete a student placement. Practicing as a physician in a rural community requires a broad knowledge base and skill set to provide the full range of services offered to the citizens of the Exploits area. These services include emergency care; care of the elderly; long term care; house calls; palliative care; dementia care; minor surgical and women‘s health procedures. As a family physician, Dr. W oolfrey is a member of a primary care team and works with other health professionals including nurses, dietitians, community pharmacists and regional counseling services. He serves patients of all ages with all types of issues including mental health, chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, as well as acute injuries and infections Dr. W oolfrey is an advocate for healthy individuals and healthy communities. The family doctor‘s office is a point of entry to the complex medical system and as a Family Physician, Dr. W oolfrey helps patients navigate the health system to investi- gate symptoms and access treatment. .
