  • The Story of Final Fantasy VII and How Squaresoft
STS145 History of Computer Game Design, Final Paper, Winter 2001 Gek Siong Low Coming to America The making of Final Fantasy VII and how Squaresoft conquered the RPG market Gek Siong Low [email protected] Disclaimer: I have tried my best to find sources that are as reliable as possible (press releases, interviews in published magazines, etc) but many times I had to depend on third-party accounts of what happened. Some of these accounts conflict with one another, so I try to present as coherent an account of the history as I can here. I do not claim that everything in this paper is true. With that in mind, let us proceed on with the story… Introduction “[Final Fantasy VII is]…quite possibly the greatest game ever made.” -- GameFan magazine, quote on back of Final Fantasy VII CD case (Greatest Hits edition) The story of Squaresoft’s success in the US video games market appears at first glance to be like a fairy tale. Before Final Fantasy VII, console-based role-playing games (RPGs) were still a niche market, played only by a dedicated few who were willing to endure the long wait for the few games to cross the Pacific and onto American soil. Then came Final Fantasy VII in the September of 1997, wowing everybody with its amazing graphics, story and gameplay. The game single-handedly lifted console-based RPGs out of their little niche into the mainstream, selling millions of copies worldwide, and made Squaresoft a household name in video games. Final Fantasy VII CD cover art Today console-based RPGs are a major industry, with players spoilt-for- choice on which RPG to buy every Christmas.

  • A Look Into the Development and Presence of Early Video Game Music in Popular Culture
Wesleyan University The Honors College 8-Bit Heroes: A Look into the Development and Presence of Early Video Game Music in Popular Culture by Anthony Martello Class of 2010 A thesis (or essay) submitted to the faculty of Wesleyan University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts with Departmental Honors in Music Middletown, Connecticut April, 2010 2 8-Bit Heroes: A Look into the Development and Presence of Early Video Game Music in Popular Culture Introduction Video games are more popular than ever. Youth spend their days with their eyes glued to the video screen spending countless hours gaining unimaginable power and prowess in simulated worlds. Video games are often written off as just another example of simple popular culture. But as many other art forms possessed similar conceptions in their beginnings, video games may one day be considered a new serious art medium. Though there are many key aspects to the popularity of video games, most of them at base level are visual by nature. However, when it comes to relating a character or environment in a virtual world to a person in the real world, audio is a key component in empathizing with the gamer. The different sound effects in a game and the background music to each setting present the simulated world in a more defined environment that the player can relate to. For example, dark ominous music can represent impending danger, while upbeat cheery music allows the gamer to relax in safety. Not only does music give these video game worlds a sound environment, but it also creates a sense of feeling and emotion within the gamer.

It includes case studies from several games including The Legend of Zelda, Dragon Warrior, and multiple games from the Final Fantasy series. Discussed in detail are how specific gaming events such as the overworld, town, and battle each serve a specific function in the player’s immersion into an imaginary world. Overworld themes are used to evoke a sense of place, town themes establish identity of the inhabitants, while battle themes provide intensity to a new form of gameplay. The music for each one of these gaming events contains specific harmonic, melodic, or rhythmic gestures that establish musical tropes that are used throughout this genre of game. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to express my deepest appreciation to my committee: Drs. Steven Kemper, Robert Aldridge, Karen Cook, and Christopher Doll. Thank you for taking the time to read this dissertation and for your invaluable advice.

Music and the Moving Image XVI MAY 28 – MAY 31, 2020 ABSTRACTS 1. Thursday, May 28, 1:00 AM – 2:30 PM EST, Blake Neeley, Keynote Scoring Television: the New Golden Age in Streaming Media Through the proliferation of streaming media and enhanced digital technologies, the creative visions that once polarized television and film, have now blurred. Prolific television composer Blake Neely will demonstrate how his creative process operates within a “new golden age” of television and documentaries. He will compare and contrast the overall sound, styles and various tropes of modern scoring, including the use of live musicians, computers and creative team expansion. Having composed music for over 1400 episodes of television, across 34 successful series, including the DC Universe, Neely will focus on his overall approach, philosophy, and process in an ever-changing, yet highly-evolved landscape of scoring to picture. What goes into creating the overall sound-world for a series during its genesis? How is a specific character’s theme approached? How do these themes and sound-worlds evolve and even combine throughout the life of a series? Neely will explore his workflow and ideas, including the musical, narrative, and cultural inspirations that guide him. Further analysis will look at how this ethos is applied to a seemingly wholly different medium — documentary scoring. Where are the similarities of process, and where are the differences? 2. Thursday, May 28, 3:00- 4:30 PM EST “You Made Me Love You:” Judy Garland and the Performance of Sincerity Daniel Batchelder, University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music The 2019 release of the biopic Judy confirmed that the Geist of Judy Garland has continued to haunt contemporary American Zeit half a century after the singer-actress’ death.
