TEXTUS INEDITI ANTONIO POSSEVINO'S TRIBUTE TO EDMUND CAMPION JOHN PATRICK DONNELLY, S.J. - Marquette University, Milwaukee. During June of 1580 Edmund Campion and Robert Persons were smuggled into England and worked with marked success until Campion's capture by the English government on July 17, 1581. He was tried for treason and executed December 1, 1581. The treason charges were widely disbelieved in England and on the Continent; indeed the execution caused such resent ment throughout Catholic Europe that the English government felt com pelled to justify its action. The most important English apology was The Execution of Justice in England, which first appeared anonymously on 1 December 17, 1583 • Its real author was William Cecil, Lord Burghley. An expanded edition was published in 1584; since the English government wanted to present its case to the larger European world as well as to its own subjects, there were Latin, French, Dutch, and probably Italian and 2 German translations as early as 1584 • The news of Campion's execution created considerable stir in far away Poland. Even before Campion's martyrdom the famous Jesuit writer Peter Skarga had incorporated considerable material on the English martyrs in his popular Lives of the Saints of 1579. In 1583 there appeared at Vilna a Polish translation of Campion's Decem Rationes together with a short life of the author3 . -

Some have assumed that the unfortunate persons who suffered death and lesser penalties for their reli- gion during this reign, were also guilty of what we should admit to be acts of treason against the State. This theory is not supported by facts. Modern research (and the word "modern," in this case, means that of the last ten or fifteen years) has proved beyond question the utter falsity of Coke's statement, "That in the reign of Elizabeth there was put to death for religion not one." The most has been made of the persecution under Queen Mary, and the names of the sufferers have become as household words, yet even now but little is generally known of similar deeds that were done in the reign of her sister. -

In the harsh winter of 1609-1610, settlers at Jamestown placed a small silver case with a slide opening etched with a single letter ─ M ─ carefully on top of a white oak coffin and then covered it with the hard, cold dirt of the New World. Inside the silver encasing were seven bone fragments and two lead ampulae filled with water, oil, dirt, or blood─relics of an unknown saint or saints that came to rest in Virginia. The settlers placed these on top of a coffin, a box filled with the corpse of a deceased English colonist. When the news broke in 2015 that archaeologists had uncovered a reliquary in James- town, some authors intimated that it would force us to reconsider the history of early America anew.1 Others suggested that the public and those involved in archaeological findings should know better, that the religious diversity among early settlers had long been established in the scholarship.2 Both perspectives have some validity, but the dis- covery demonstrates that our greatest insights and questions can come from the ground. The reliquary’s preeminent value—and why it deserves to be considered as remarkable— is as a material source that raises new questions and helps us imagine new possibilities around the earliest English settlement in North America. -

Hewko was able to obtain a magnificent, handmade statue of Our Lady of Fatima, from Fatima, Portugal! Father also had an exquisite crown found for Her sweet head and a beautiful Rosary with which to grace Her hands! It is Father Hewko's earnest hope that She will be able to visit a short while at the different homes of devoted families once a secure traveling case can be procured. A beautiful-in-Her-suffering statue of Our Lady of Sorrows also graces the Our Lady of Fatima Chapel. The statue arrived in time for Her Feast of the Seven Sorrows. Next to Our Lady of Sorrows are placed the Instruments of the Passion of Our Lord. Our Mother of Sorrows holds Her Son's Crown of Thorns in Her own hands and to Her left, are placed the Sponge which was offered to Her Son soaking with vinegar and gall, the Lance which pierced His Sacred Side, the Thirty Pieces of Silver for which He was betrayed, the die with which lots were cast for His vesture, the Rooster which reminded St. Peter of his betrayal, the three large Nails which pierced His hands and feet to the Cross, the instruments of the Flagellation, and the Ladder which was used to lower Her Son's Sacred Body after His Death on the Cross. Diocese of Plymouth From the Office of the Bishop Pastoral Message for the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Canonisation of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales – 25th October 2020. Dear Friends, This weekend we mark an historic moment – the fiftieth anniversary of the Canonisation of the forty martyrs of England and Wales, which took place on 25th October 1970. On that occasion, Pope Paul VI reminded us “We have among the 40 holy Martyrs secular and regular priests, religious of various orders, and of different rank, lay people of very noble descent, as well as of modest condition; we have women who were married, mothers with a family. What unites them all is that interior attitude of fidelity to the call of God asked of them, as an answer of love…….The drama of the existence of these martyrs, was that their honest and sincere loyalty to the civil authority came to be in conflict with fidelity to God and with what, according to the dictates of their conscience illuminated by the Catholic faith, they knew to involve the revealed truths, especially to the Holy Eucharist and on the inalienable prerogatives of the successor of Peter, who, at the behest of God, is the universal Pastor of the Church of Christ.” (Pope Paul VI, Homily at the Canonisation of the Forty Martyrs) We are especially blessed to have one of these Martyrs, St Cuthbert Mayne, as one of our Patrons. He was born and grew up in North Devon and ministered as a priest in Cornwall. He was captured there in 1577 and imprisoned in Launceston Castle for several months before being hung, drawn and quartered in the Market Square on 29th November 1577. -

Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest St. Edmund Campion Queen Elizabeth I understood that the priesthood is at the heart of the Catholic Church, so she hoped to destroy Catholicism in England by letting all the old priests die off while preventing the formation of new ones. Anti-Catholic legislation in many areas was increasing under Elizabeth. For example, the Act of Supremacy of 1559 required those holding public office and those studying at the universities to swear as follows: Saint Edmund Campion. The rope and knife indicate “I, A. B., do utterly testify and declare in my the means by which he was martyred. conscience that the Queen’s Highness is the only supreme governor of this realm, and of all other her Highness’s dominions and countries, as well in all spiritual or ecclesiastical things or causes, as temporal, and that no foreign prince, person, prelate, state or potentate hath or ought to have any jurisdiction, power, superiority, pre- eminence or authority ecclesiastical or spiritual within this realm; …” Many English Catholic academics left England and settled at the University at Douay (then in Spanish Netherlands, now in France) and it soon became a kind of Oxford in exile. Among them was William (later Cardinal) Allen, who in 1658 set up a seminary there for the formation of English priests. Further such seminaries were subsequently set up and began supplying priests for the English Mission. Many of them were martyred. The requirement for Oxford students to take the oath lasted until 1854. Edmund Campion (24 January 1540 - 1 December 1581) had been a brilliant scholar at St John’s College Oxford and later a charismatic and popular professor, known for his talent as an orator. -
