We are extremely passionate about our school and are proud in how the school has developed over time, but we are also very excited about the direction the school could continue in the future with new leadership. Our school needs a Head Teacher who can provide us with the leadership and commitment the students deserve and who has a focus on the exam results we strive to achieve. A sense of community is paramount to St. Cuthbert Mayne, we aim to put our core values: courage, integrity, creativity and compassion into practice in the day to day running of the School. Being a comprehensive school we are proud to cater for students of all abilities, with that comes a chance to guide students towards a range of post-18 options as well as the traditional route of University. We feel one of the main aims of a Head Teacher at St. Cuthbert Mayne is to prepare each and everyone one of us for the wider world, so once we leave, we have the skills needed for life. As long serving students we believe that St. Cuthbert Mayne allows us the opportunity to work hard, but also have fun and enjoy our life here. St Cuthbert Mayne is a joint faith Church of England and Catholic School. Both Ofsted and Section 48 inspections in 2016 rated the school as ‘good.’ We are looking for an excellent Headteacher to build and lead the school on the next stage of our journey to be an outstanding school. The Governors are very proud of the ethos of the school which is evident within the student and staff bodies. We aim to support every student to achieve their potential. St Cuthbert Mayne is a Centre of Excellence for Teaching, Learning and Leadership. We are a Google School with a fully integrated system of Google Classroom, together with Digital Leaders from the student body. We have a thriving chaplaincy team which is a vital part of our school. Michael Cronin Chair of Governors 4 Background Torbay is one of the most popular visitor destinations in the country and has a wealth of outdoor, cultural and leisure opportunities for residents and visitors. It is close to Dartmoor National Park with easy access to Plymouth, Exeter and the M5. It is also close to other areas of outstanding natural beauty, there is a thriving sailing and surfing community along with several blue flag beaches. The School St Cuthbert Mayne School is a mixed, comprehensive, Roman Catholic/Church of England Secondary School with a Sixth-Form based in Torquay, Devon. It is a voluntary aided state school operating under the Diocese of Exeter and Plymouth. St Cuthbert Mayne School is a successful school serving the Christian community over a wide area of South Devon. We are a Joint Catholic and Church of England School which welcomes students from all or no faith background. The teaching accommodation is of mixed age but well-resourced and maintained. A new classroom block was opened in November 2012, along with landscaping and paving of circulation areas. The latest Ofsted Inspection in November 2016 graded the school to be good, in every category. The statutory inspection of Anglican/Catholic Schools also conducted in November, graded the school to be good in all areas. Therefore the school has invested in staff training to become a Centre of Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Leadership. Our Sixth Form offers a range of A level and BTEC courses, Sixth Form has a focus on nurturing talent and character. The tutors offer academic challenge and pastoral support. Over the past 4 years we have launched Google Apps for Education schoolwide, enabling a collaborative approach to learning and teaching for both students and staff. This was supported by St Cuthbert Mayne being the first school in Torquay to issue all students, from Year 10 to Year 13, with their own Chromebooks. In the harsh winter of 1609-1610, settlers at Jamestown placed a small silver case with a slide opening etched with a single letter ─ M ─ carefully on top of a white oak coffin and then covered it with the hard, cold dirt of the New World. Inside the silver encasing were seven bone fragments and two lead ampulae filled with water, oil, dirt, or blood─relics of an unknown saint or saints that came to rest in Virginia. The settlers placed these on top of a coffin, a box filled with the corpse of a deceased English colonist. When the news broke in 2015 that archaeologists had uncovered a reliquary in James- town, some authors intimated that it would force us to reconsider the history of early America anew.1 Others suggested that the public and those involved in archaeological findings should know better, that the religious diversity among early settlers had long been established in the scholarship.2 Both perspectives have some validity, but the dis- covery demonstrates that our greatest insights and questions can come from the ground. The reliquary’s preeminent value—and why it deserves to be considered as remarkable— is as a material source that raises new questions and helps us imagine new possibilities around the earliest English settlement in North America.

Hewko was able to obtain a magnificent, handmade statue of Our Lady of Fatima, from Fatima, Portugal! Father also had an exquisite crown found for Her sweet head and a beautiful Rosary with which to grace Her hands! It is Father Hewko's earnest hope that She will be able to visit a short while at the different homes of devoted families once a secure traveling case can be procured. A beautiful-in-Her-suffering statue of Our Lady of Sorrows also graces the Our Lady of Fatima Chapel. The statue arrived in time for Her Feast of the Seven Sorrows. Next to Our Lady of Sorrows are placed the Instruments of the Passion of Our Lord. Our Mother of Sorrows holds Her Son's Crown of Thorns in Her own hands and to Her left, are placed the Sponge which was offered to Her Son soaking with vinegar and gall, the Lance which pierced His Sacred Side, the Thirty Pieces of Silver for which He was betrayed, the die with which lots were cast for His vesture, the Rooster which reminded St. Peter of his betrayal, the three large Nails which pierced His hands and feet to the Cross, the instruments of the Flagellation, and the Ladder which was used to lower Her Son's Sacred Body after His Death on the Cross. Dear Friends, This weekend we mark an historic moment – the fiftieth anniversary of the Canonisation of the forty martyrs of England and Wales, which took place on 25th October 1970. On that occasion, Pope Paul VI reminded us “We have among the 40 holy Martyrs secular and regular priests, religious of various orders, and of different rank, lay people of very noble descent, as well as of modest condition; we have women who were married, mothers with a family. What unites them all is that interior attitude of fidelity to the call of God asked of them, as an answer of love…….The drama of the existence of these martyrs, was that their honest and sincere loyalty to the civil authority came to be in conflict with fidelity to God and with what, according to the dictates of their conscience illuminated by the Catholic faith, they knew to involve the revealed truths, especially to the Holy Eucharist and on the inalienable prerogatives of the successor of Peter, who, at the behest of God, is the universal Pastor of the Church of Christ.” (Pope Paul VI, Homily at the Canonisation of the Forty Martyrs) We are especially blessed to have one of these Martyrs, St Cuthbert Mayne, as one of our Patrons. He was born and grew up in North Devon and ministered as a priest in Cornwall. He was captured there in 1577 and imprisoned in Launceston Castle for several months before being hung, drawn and quartered in the Market Square on 29th November 1577.

    Saint of the Day October October 1: St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, Virgin and Doctor Thérèse was born in Normandy, France in 1873, the youngest of five daughters born to Blessed Zelie and Louis Martin. Throughout her childhood, St. Thérèse felt the call to be a Carmelite nun like her older sister Pauline. She entered the Carmelite monastery at Caen in 1888 when she was just fifteen. She lived a life of humility, simplicity, and trust in God. St. Thérèse wanted to always perform small acts, rather than great deeds, for the glory of God. This became her “little way,” and every sacrifice became a joy to her. St. Thérèse taught virtue by her word and example. Her sisters encouraged her to write about her own life. Later, this spiritual memoir became The Story of a Soul. St. Thérèse died in 1897 of tuberculosis at age 24, after much suffering. The story of her life quickly spread and devotion to her grew. She was canonized in 1925. In 1997, St. John Paul II declared her one of the thirty-three Doctors of the Church, one of four women to receive the title. St. Thérèse is the patroness of the missions. She is known as the Little Flower. October 2: Memorial of the Guardian Angels Angels are pure spirits created by God. The word angel means messenger. There are many stories about angels in the Bible. Angels give us God’s messages, keep us safe from harm, and pray for us.     The Canonisation of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales The cause for the canonisation of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, which eventually took place on 25 October 1970, had its roots in the mid-19th Century when, following the restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in England and Wales in 1850, Cardinal Nicholas Wiseman and Cardinal Henry Manning, successive Archbishops of Westminster from 1850 until 1892, led a campaign for the recognition of those who had been Martyred for the faith. Just a year previously, in 1849, Frederick William Faber had written the rousing hymn Faith of Our Fathers in memory of the Martyrs. Born and raised an Anglican, Faber converted and was ordained a Priest later becoming an Oratorian Father, the congregation founded by St Philip Neri to which St John Henry Newman also belonged. By 1935 nearly two hundred Reformation Martyrs had been beatified, earning the title ‘Blessed’, but only two, John Fisher and Thomas More, had been canonised; both on 19 May 1935 by Pope Pius XI. Following the end of the Second World War, the cause, which had been largely dormant for some years, was gradually revived and, in December 1960, the names of thirty four English and six Welsh Martyrs were submitted to the Sacred Congregation of Rites by Cardinal William Godfrey, Archbishop of Westminster. All of these had been Martyred between 1535 and 1679. The list of names was drawn up in consultation with the Bishops of England and Wales and an attempt was made to ensure the list reflected a spread of social status and religious rank, together with a geographical spread and the existence of a well-established devotion.

    THE BL. WILLIAM WAY. THE KINGSTON MARTYR’S LIFE & TIMES. David A Kennedy, PhD 7 April 2020 ABSTRACT William Way probably was baptised at St Petrock’s church in Exeter on 21 May 1561. His father, also called William Way, was a man of substance who was a churchwarden at St Petrock’s, which would have followed the Anglican rite of the time. William Way the younger underwent a short course at the English College at Rheims to become a missionary-priest in England. He left on 9 December 1586 fully aware of the great risks that he faced under the various anti-Catholic Acts then in force in England and of the sufferings there of former students of the College. Fr. Way was a hunted man until the time of his arrest in Lambeth around 29 June 1587. Thereafter he was held in the Clink prison in Southwark. On 16 September 1588, after the defeat of the Spanish Armada, he was tried at Newgate Sessions, convicted of high treason and sentenced to death. On 23 September 1588, probably in the market place at Kingston upon Thames, he was hung, drawn and quartered with great cruelty. The signs were that he welcomed martyrdom. He was beatified in 1929. A shrine to the Bl. William Way was unveiled at St Agatha’s Catholic Church, Kingston, on 15 August 1971. INTRODUCTION This paper reviews the life and times of the Bl. William Way, the Martyr of Kingston upon Thames. A paper dated 14 January 2020 focused mainly on the site of his execution on 23 September 1588.
