Surah 1 - al-Faatihah –‘ The Opening

Summary: It is named al-Faatihah, the Opening - because it opens the Book and by it the recitation in prayer commences. It is also named Ummul Qur`aan, the Mother of the Qur`aan, and Ummul Kitaab, the Mother of the Book. In essence it is the supplication to which what follows from the is the response.

Surah 2 - Baqarah –‘The Cow’

Summary: This is the longest Surah of the Quran, and in it occurs the longest verse (2:282). The name of the Surah is from the Parable of the Cow (2:67-71), which illustrates the insufficiency of quarrelsome obedience. When is lost, people put off obedience with various excuses; even when at last they obey in the letter, they fail in the spirit and this prevents them from seeing that spiritually they are not alive but dead. For life is movement, activity, striving, fighting against baser things. And this is the burden of the Surah.
