A Humble Protest a Literary Generation's Quest for The
A HUMBLE PROTEST A LITERARY GENERATION’S QUEST FOR THE HEROIC SELF, 1917 – 1930 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Jason A. Powell, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2008 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Steven Conn, Adviser Professor Paula Baker Professor David Steigerwald _____________________ Adviser Professor George Cotkin History Graduate Program Copyright by Jason Powell 2008 ABSTRACT Through the life and works of novelist John Dos Passos this project reexamines the inter-war cultural phenomenon that we call the Lost Generation. The Great War had destroyed traditional models of heroism for twenties intellectuals such as Ernest Hemingway, Edmund Wilson, Malcolm Cowley, E. E. Cummings, Hart Crane, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and John Dos Passos, compelling them to create a new understanding of what I call the “heroic self.” Through a modernist, experience based, epistemology these writers deemed that the relationship between the heroic individual and the world consisted of a dialectical tension between irony and romance. The ironic interpretation, the view that the world is an antagonistic force out to suppress individual vitality, drove these intellectuals to adopt the Freudian conception of heroism as a revolt against social oppression. The Lost Generation rebelled against these pernicious forces which they believed existed in the forms of militarism, patriotism, progressivism, and absolutism. The -
Banned on the Run Monday - Thursday the Music THEY Wouldn’T Let You Buy
WWhat’shat’s OOnn E-Book?E-Book? By Helen Marketti Banned On The Run Monday - Thursday The music THEY wouldn’t let you buy. 5:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. Brian Southall has seen it all during his many impressive years in the music Friday industry. His latest book, Banned On The Run - the music THEY wouldn’t let you buy 5:00 - Midnight (Poppublishing, UK, 2014) is a collection of songs dating back to the 1930s that were banned Saturday from airplay and exposure to the public. Lyrics were considered offensive and inappropriate 12:00 p.m. - Midnight for the listening audience. It is an entertaining E-book as we share in the stories of why many songs were given the axe. Some examples from the book of well known songs being banned from the radio included Entertainment The Everly Brothers hit, “Wake Up Little Susie” (1957). It “suggested” that Suzie did more Every Saturday! than just sleep over. The Coasters hit “Charlie Brown” (1959) was banned for a short time on the BBC because of the word “spitball”. Next, the folk rock trio of Peter, Paul and Mary with 3AT*UNEs their classic “Puff The Magic Dragon” (1963) was on a list of records to be banned by then Vice President, Spiro Agnew. It was not clear if the song was referring to smoking dope or a Facemeyer Trio fun song for children. Agnew stated that the song was “blatant drug culture propaganda.” How about the Rolling Stones? “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” (1965) was taken off radio stations because there were complaints that the song was “sexually aggressive.” 3AT*UNEs Brian Southall’s music career began as a journalist on the Essex Chronicle back in the 1960s where he interviewed pop groups of that Lyle Heath generation. -

Flanagan's Running Club – Issue 31
Flanagan's Running Club – Issue 31 Introduction The first rule of Flanagan's Running Club is everyone should be telling everyone they know about Flanagan's Running Club! After all, sharing is caring. Details of how to sign up is in the epilogue. There is no need to panic, there is no actual running involved, it is not a running club in that sense. The title is made up from extending the title of my favourite book – Flanagan’s Run by Tom McNab. So enjoy the read. On This Day – 10th February 1870 - The YWCA is founded in New York City. 1940 - Tom and Jerry make their debut with Puss Gets the Boot. 1996 - IBM supercomputer Deep Blue defeats Garry Kasparov in chess for the first time. It’s Feast of St. Paul's Shipwreck (Malta) Fenkil Day (Eritrea) 365 Reasons To Be Proud To Be A Londoner - Magical Moments in London's History What is the bestselling novel ever, in any language? Thankfully it’s not 50 Shades, but A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens (200 million copies sold). Dickens created some of the most memorable characters in literary history, including Oliver Twist, Ebenezer Scrooge, Mr Micawber, Miss Havisham and Uriah Heep. ‘Dickensian London’ has entered our imagination as a real place – not that you’d like to go there. And it was today in 1836 that Dickens’ first novel, The Pickwick Papers, was commissioned as a monthly serial. It was an immediate success, bringing the twenty-four-year-old writer instant fame.
