Pre-Tournament Hype With Sugar Ray Seales The Olympic Gold Champion and retired pro boxer now coaches with IBG. Here are some of his thoughts ahead of the 2019 Golden Gloves. “I use two words in my game: focus and listen. Focus on what you’re doing and listen how to get it done. I boxed 19 years. I had 430 fights. I lost 19. I had over 200 knockouts. It’s what I love to do. It’s my game. It’s not the dog that’s in the fight. It’s the fight that’s in the dog. Now remember this: A chihuahua can beat a pitbull. It’s who is going to grab who first. I don’t like seconds. I’m a first-place deal. The greatest of all time (Muhammad Ali) said to me in an autograph, ‘Service to others is the rent we pay for our room in heaven.’ If we don’t give, we don’t get. The Lord said in heaven there are many mansions and one has your name on it, but the only way you’re going to get there is if you provide a service for someone. You don’t have to reach in your pocket and give any money: a pat on the shoulder, a nice word and a good morning... (Regarding the 2019 Indiana Golden Gloves tournament...) We’re gonna win again. We won five in a row and we’re gonna win a sixth one. Why? Because we understand that the only way we’re gonna get there is to pay attention. We gotta focus and listen. Focus on what you’re doing and listen how to get it done. You all come see me. I know what it is.” APRIL 2019 INDIANA GOLDEN GLOVES PAGE 5 Second Place Team Second Place honors in 2018 went to Louisville TKO. • Golden Gloves Champions to World Champion?
Golden Gloves Champions to World Champion? While many of the top stars in Boxing enjoyed a successful amateur career winning various honours it’s not always integril to their development. It also doesn’t gaurentee success in the pro’s. The two sports after all are very different. There’s no exact formula to enjoying success in both sports. In America & Britain fighters tend to go from the amateur’s to pro’s without the same sort of grounding that they get if they were from Cuba, Russia or another Eastern Block country. This isn’t nessessarily a bad thing as a punishing schedule can mean that a guy leaves the best years in the unpaid ranks. However it can also provide him with the chance to hone his skills further and give him much more experience. At the end of the day it’s a fine balancing act. We start off our closer look into some of the most prestigious amateur tournements with the National Golden Gloves. Super Heavyweight – Over 201 – Only came into existance in 1982 since then no fighter has successfully won this title and gone on to fight for the Heavyweight title much less win one. Larry Donald probably holds the distinction of being the best fighter of the past winners who went on to have a decent pro career. Heavyweight – 201 – Is one of the original division’s which debuted way back in 1962. Four fighters have won both the National Golden Gloves & later World title. Michael Dokes became the first in 1976 he later won the WBA Heavyweight crown when he briefly reigned from 1982-83.

  • Roy Harris '56 Boxing Legend Recalls Title Bout 50 Years Ago (With Photos)
Roy Harris ‘56 Roy Harris came to Sam Houston State from Cut ‘n’ Shoot, Texas. He graduated and was commissioned in 1956. Below are newspaper articles and other information about Roy. If you talk to any of the people that were in ROTC and the Army with Roy…they can tell you some stories. Boxing legend recalls title bout 50 years ago (with photos) KIMBERLY STAUFFER, Copyright 2008 Houston Chronicle Published 5:30 am, Tuesday, August 26, 2008 • Photo: David Hopper IMAGE 1 OF 5 Cut and Shoot native Roy Harris tries on an old pair of practice boxing gloves he used during training for one of his professional boxing matches. The barefoot boxer from Cut and Shoot battled his way from a muddy homemade boxing ring to undefeated national stardom as a heavy weight pugilist with a mean left jab, landing his name in the record books and his town on the map. Roy Harris, a local boxing legend famous for his 1958 fight against world heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson, started his career under the tutelage of his father, Henry Harris, a burly hog farmer who taught Harris and his older brother Tobe how to box and wrestle. Known as the “bare-knuckled champion of the big thicket,” Henry trained the boys, driving them in a pickup truck to fight in tournaments they found in the newspapers, said Robin Navarro Montgomery, the author of Roy Harris’ biography, Cut ‘N Shoot Texas: Roy Harris — Battler from the Backwoods. Harris, who lives in Conroe within a mile of his childhood home, sparred bare-fisted with Tobe for hours between feeding the almost 500 hogs roaming the woods and tending to the family’s crops of corn, sweet potatoes, cucumbers and tomatoes.
