Having played the instru- ment for, then, almost two decades, I thought that a novelist would not, could not, feature specialty instruments such as the C-melody sax if he did not play the horn himself. Once the saxophone had caught my attention, I noticed all sorts of uncommon references that seemed to confirm my hunch that Thomas Pynchon himself played the instrument: McClintic Sphere’s 4½ reed, the contra- bass sax of Against the Day, Gravity’s Rainbow’s Charlie Parker passage.

Its contribution to the historiography of the period stems from the fact that it constitutes the first academic study of the third largest resistance organisation in Greece, the 5/42 regiment of evzones. The study of this national resistance organisation can thus extend our knowledge of the Greek resistance effort, the political relations between the main resistance groups, the conditions that led to the civil war and the domestic relevance of British policies.

    southeastern europe 41 (2017) 276-301 brill.com/seeu European Governments’ Responses to the ‘Refugee Crisis’ The Interdependence of eu Internal and External Controls Dimitris Skleparis University of Glasgow, uk [email protected] Abstract In the face of the ‘refugee crisis’, many European governments, even in traditionally liberal states, unilaterally introduced a number of restrictive and, often, controver- sial migration, asylum, and border control policies. The author argues that past legal- bureaucratic choices on migration and asylum policies, ongoing developments in international relations at that time, the structural and perceived capacity of receiving states to cope with the refugee influx, and long-standing migration-related security concerns influenced the responses of many European governments amid the mass population movement. However, the author also suggests that the surfacing of par- ticular policies across Europe was related to the newly elected Greek government’s at- tempted U-turn from similar repressive and controversial policies during that time. In this regard, the author maintains that repressive and controversial migration, asylum, and border control policies cannot simply be abolished within the context of the eu common market and interdependence of eu internal and external controls.     Surplus Citizens Struggles in the Greek Crisis, 2010–2014 Dimitra Kotouza A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 109,645 words University of Kent September 2015 Abstract This thesis analyses the social struggles that occurred between 2010 and 2014 during the crisis in Greece: labour struggles, the movement of the squares, demonstrations and riots, neighbourhood assemblies, solidarity projects and economies, local environmental struggles, and anti-fascist and migrants’ struggles. It discusses their internal and external limits in the historical specificity of the contemporary crisis and class relation. Drawing critically on Théorie Communiste’s periodising schema, these struggles are framed, first, through a shift in the dynamic of the class relation effected by the crisis and the re- structuring, which is a continuation of the first phase of ‘neoliberal’ restructuring in the 1990s. This shift intensified a central capitalist contradiction: while the capital relation imposes most violently the absolute dependence of subsistence on the wage, the wage relation fails to guarantee subsist- ence and integrates proletarians as surplus to capitalist reproduction. Second, the struggles are framed through the deep political crisis of state sovereignty and the relation between state and civil society, caused by the relentless imposition of the restructuring in conjunction with supranational institutions. These historical transformations are traced through the mutual constitution of interna- tional tendencies and the development of class struggle in Greece, against theories of dependency and underdevelopment. Ideological responses to the financial crisis and the logic of the restructur- ing are interrogated by employing theories of value, fetishism, and the state influenced by the Ger- man ‘value-form’ debate.

    THE TRUTH ABOUT GREECE 632 A1 W9 no.1668 PUBLISHED BY THE GREEK UNITY COMMITTEE MAIN GREEK RESISTANCE Perhaps less is known about Greek resistance against the Axis powers than about any other liberation movement in Occupied Europe. This is not because the Greek people have been the least active. On the contrary, few resistance movements have been so efficiently organised and have achieved such notable successes. Nor is the poverty of our information due to lack of communications with the Allies. It is well known that ceaseless watch cannot be kept over the long, indented coastline of Greece and over the islands of the Archipelago, so as to prevent close touch between Greece and the Allies. In Free Greece there are aerodromes where Allied planes can come and go, and now there is an Anglo-American Military Mission in Greece equipped with radio-transmitters, which must keep almost daily contact across the Aegean and the Adriatic. The German and Quisling press and radio make frequent reference to resistance in Greece and concentrate their attacks chiefly on National Front of Liberation (E.A.M.) and the Greek People’s Army of Liberation (E.L.A.S.) Their reports alone give an idea of the scale of the movement and make it clear that fighting has never ceased in Greece. Although the Allied Press has given much publicity to the German reprisals, the burning of towns, the sacking of whole districts and the shooting of hostages, it has told little about the actions which provoked such retaliation. Since there is no doubt that the true facts are available, it is obvious that there are influences at work among the Allies to control their circulation, or at least that the Royal Greek Government in Cairo is doing its best to suppress information about the successes that the Greek people are having against their oppressors.

A number of these new parties have managed to achieve electoral success in multiple consecutive elections despite the use of violence by its members and supporters. I argue that the continued electoral support of far-right parties can largely be attributed to the efforts of party activists in establishing electoral connections with its constituency through the provision of essential and meaningful services. I create a unique tripartite explanatory model to account for the electoral persistence of far-right parties. I employ this model to analyze Golden Dawn in Greece and Jobbik in Hungary and demonstrate how the actions of party activists can engender continued political support for even the most extreme far-right parties.

  • Greece Was Denied Entry Into European
    History and Background Information A Brief Explanation of How the Greek Sovereign Debt Crisis Came to Be In 1998, long before the crisis, Greece was denied entry into European Monetary Union. With high inflation at 5.4%, and a high long-term interest rate of 9.9%, its non-participation in the exchange rate mechanism, and a 6% deficit-to- GDP ratio and a massive debt-to-GDP ratio of 98.7%, it “had met none of the economic criteria specific in the Maastricht treaty or the Stability and Growth Pact” (Martin and Waller, 2012). This was no different from a number of the other nations in the euro zone at the time, as shown in the figures below. However for Greece, the fiscal situation did not improve. Instead of decreasing its debt-to-GDP ratio in order to gain access to the EMU, a move done by countries such as Ireland, Greece increased its debt-to-GDP ratio to 103% by the year 2000 (Martin and Waller, 2012). For one reason or another, possibly due to “the euphoria of creating a single currency to compete with the U.S. dollar,” Greece entered the euro zone (Martin and Waller, 2012). Upon entry, Greece’s debt, along with Spain’s debt, Italy’s debt, Ireland’s debt, and Portugal’s debt, became synonymous with the rest of the euro zone in the eyes of investors (Martin and Waller, 2012). The interest rate on Greece’s long-term debt had “converged to the rate paid bay Germany and France” (Martin and Waller, 2012).
